Is Ms. Marvel on the front lines of the Secret Invasion...or is she part of the invasion?! Out-gunned and on the run, with S.H.I.E.L.D. convinced she's a Skrull impostor, Ms. Marvel must fight for her identity and her life against her very own Lightning Strike Force! But when the Strike Force has a Ms. Marvel of their own, even Carol can't be sure she's Carol anymore! Secret Invasion continues here!
This was okayish I will say. So we basically have the strike force fighting against Carol as they suspect her to be a skrull and I love the fight here and the tension and drama in particular the stuff with Machine man which seems to be a tense build up and then the fight and the big tie in with the Secret invasion event as the heroes fight the swarm of skrulls and then finally Carol dealing with mad skrull which is looking for something and you see her let loose and its nice and pays off big time with the previous plots and some good introspection moments for Carol! And the art was okay for the most part I will say.
Ms. Marvel is mistaken for a skrull and then beats on some super skrulls in this Secret Invasion crossover. The art is just OK. The story is just OK. Reed is not very good at handling subplots. They come and go at whims.
3.5 stars. So the first three issues were the best. This is the beginnings of the Secret Invasion. There is a skrull impersonating Carol. I was dope watching her SHIELD strike team trying to figure out who was who and Carol trying to figure out how to prove she was actually Carol. Plus we learn some revelations as to who a certain character really was. If the rest of the book had kept this kind of story telling this easily could have been 4 stars. But the next 3 issues were just one big fight. Carol fighting Skrulls for 3 straight issues. Nothing else going on but that. Although it was cool seeing Carol kick Skrull butt, it did get a bit repetitive after awhile. But still, overall a solid entry. Bring on the next volume.
What an uneven graphic novel. The first two issues felt like they had almost no connection to the later three. And this is a particularly startling conflict between Carol and the Skrulls in light of her movie that came out last year, where she ended up befriending some. Here there were multiple references to Carol killing Skrulls and calling them "animals" or "rabid animals." ... Huh.
This run was never my favorite by any means. I mean, she started out this book deciding to get her act together by hiring a freakin' *publicist* to cover her superhero exploits. Carol was never a particularly lovable character, and this helped seal it.
Still, I'm catching up on a book I used to read (13 years ago) when it first came out, and this is how Carol is *supposed* to be, from my point of view. In the last couple years writers have changed her costume, her personality, and now her origin. It's all a bit much. At what point can we say the new character isn't Carol anymore?
Ms. Marvel redeemed herself in this volume after the Civil War, she was gonna be replaced by she saved herself by finding it out quickly, then she took on countless Skrulls by herself in the battle at New York City. But the ending was so random, it really ruined this volume.
This volume thankfully has less of the awkward fanservice posing than the previous volumes. I don't recall any weird body angles or crotch shots with her uniform's too-high bikini line. There is, however, an "Oh, no, my costume is falling apart!" moment that makes me wrinkle my nose. They were so close to doing it right... Other than the sexualizartion of Ms. Marvel, the art looks really good. Carol looks fantastic (despite her large breasts and tiny waistline being annoyingly distracting - okay just being disproportionately drawn for increased sex appeal in general). But I should probably add that she does have a bunch of badass looking moments in here, too.
My favourite scene is the battle for Manhattan. When Carol's glorying in the thrill of the fight, it's kind of... awesome. She feels at peace and indestructible, and that's exactly how I feel about her reading it. The scene has this sense of quiet, even though she's in the midst of a war.
Overall, I'd say this book is an improvement from the previous ones in the run (I haven't read the Civil War volume yet so I'm excluding that). If you like the run so far, you'll like this one too. If you think it's just okay, that isn't going to change. And if you dislike it, that's probably not going to change either. For me, this series is just okay, and this book is one of the better ones.
Hoo boy...the 90's didn't go without a fight did they?
Despite being published in the late 00's this book reads like 90's trash comics in every way. It's vulgar, it's violent, and the artwork is more concerned with showing off Carol's ass and boobs than it is with anything silly like consistency or quality. These kinds of comics can be fun...see NEXTWAVE for a title that homages the 90's era in a way that isn't garbage...this comic is not.
That being said, Carol is within character here if only dialed up to an 11/10. While she's always been impulsive and a hot head, she's straight up murdering Skrulls with a psychotic glee. Yeah, it's war but...still. I really wanted to give this book a solid chance, if only because it meant that I got to have more Carol in my collection. Sadly, I don't think I'll be keeping this one on my shelves for a revisit.
"In a brilliant flash of light, Carol Danvers was transformed by the alien Knee empire's DNA-altering technology, becoming the magnificent..." Artwork, generic, 2 🌟 Not bad, it tied in with the Secret Invasion main comic neatly and there was a bit of a cliff hanger towards the end, which I hope gets addressed in this Marvel event 2 🌟 Relevance to SI, 2 🌟 So overall for this TPB 2 🌟
I think maybe I just really dislike the Secret Invasion storyline as a whole, but very little happened in this. And this volume included my least favorite comicbook cover of all time. I hope fuck boys in comics all have their careers torn to shreds.
It had its moments--the first two parts of the Battle for Manhattan were really great, but the third chapter fell flat. And the art felt all over the place. But there is still some interesting development that kind of paves the way for her mindset to become Captain Marvel
Just Carol punching shit. Wonder Man nowhere to be seen, he was all over this title in CW...now? Also, why the random ending totally unrelated to SI? Didn't Carol get taken out by Fury in Mighty Avenegrs? Ugh, so badly all over, useless, no info, just punchy mcpunch punch.
There have been two sightings of Ms. Marvel at the same time. At least one has to be a Skrull.
This was really enjoyable. It started by threading pages from old comic books into the new book, which was ok. But then it quickly got on with Ms. Marvel trying to prove she is who she is and dealing with boyfriend and publicist problems.
The artwork is very good in this volume. Some of the larger panels and full page works are excellent.
Ms. Marvel fights against Skrulls, Ms. Marvel, members of SHIELD and one very angry Skrull monster.
Excellent. Lots of fun, lots of fights and Ms. Marvel… Love it.
I had a really hard time reading all of the previous volumes of this Ms. Marvel. This one was so much more interesting. I love the Skrull, Kree storyline. This one shows that Ms. Marvel can take a beating and still dish it out. she is a total bad ass. The ending of this lead to a further storyline that will be continued in the next volume, that I have that I am really excited to start. The only complaint that I have for this character is the total lack of body knowledge that the artist has to make this character so out of...no woman real or otherwise would ever have a chest like that or let their ass hang out like that when they were superheroing like that. Totally stupid!!!
A fun lightweight affair that knows the bounds of what it has set out to accomplish. The second arc in the volume deals very specifically with an attack on Manhattan, and Carol's intervention. It's energeozed stuff that any reader will speed through, but it lacks the "wowzers" that you hope for in any action-centric arc. The pencils are a mite sloppy in places, but nothing atrocious, and overall, the art complements the writer's words nicely and evenly. Solid stuff and a fun jumping-on point.
An enjoyable Secret Invasion tie-in with a lot more action than most of the others I've read, this (slightly pervily drawn) story dips a little into Carol Danvers' background and current personal life, sees her being suspected of being a Skrull and then, for at least the second half of this volume, just beating the living snot out of about a thousand Skrulls. It's all surprisingly violent and good fun.
I have been enjoying Brian Reed's run on this character, but this volume has problems. It reminded me of a DC movie, with a lot of deaths and a hero who not only doesn't mind killing, but seems to relish it. Sad.
Puntaje: 3.3 Estrellas De todo lo que he leído de Secret Invasion esta puede ser de las historias más rescatables, sin embargo, no fue impactante ni creo que sea memorable. Para mi está en el promedio ni muy muy ni pocón pocón.
Secret invasion meh. Weird ending that doesn't fit. Lots of fighting which was cool I guess. Machine Man went from awesome in the last volume to weird and creepy in this one. Not my favorite.
Ms. Marvel is a natural match for this event with her Kree powers.
In the first half of the book, there's a Skrull replacement for Miss Marvel running around and her own team is set to bring her in. I think this is very well-handled. There's also a really cool bit in the first issue where we get to see Carol Danvers' first meeting with the Skrull done in vintage 1960s style. Things don't go well and she ends the first half of the book in a pathetic state.
But then we get into the proper tie-in to Secret Invasion and Ms. Marvel returns to deal with the Skrull invasion of Manhattan. Not only does the story have a very good bit of action, it also shows Miss Marvel at her best and she's at her best when she's hitting things and being able to be a warrior. This book works because it allows her to shine while also setting up some mystery for the next volume.
Another enjoyable collection, this time with Carol having to prove she isn't a Skrull to her colleagues, but there's still some weird stuff going on with Machine Man - it's kind of creepy.
I really do adore Ms. Marvel, she's perhaps my favorite single Marvel character. And I REALLY like the flawed persona with anger issues that's clearly portrait in this volume. Even though Danvers ripples with power and ambition and ability she is quite able to get a handle on her life, and as a character in a book she shines best in those moments of struggle against herself.
I liked the Secret Invasion story. But unlike many of the other big Marvel events I've liked the side stories from it WAYYYYY more than the actual comic. You really get to see the paranoia that just one or two skrull could inflict here. And on top of that it was really cool seeing yet another part of the battle for New York.
Visually this volume was great. Not just the art but the page layout and text and sound effects placement. The flashback stuff in the beginning was really cool. I haven't actually read the Captain Marvel stuff so I'm not sure if those are pulled from there or if they are original works done in the old style. If they are original it makes them that much cooler.
I had only two complaints from this volume. There were a few plot hooks left undeveloped, and it always makes me nervous seeing that in a comic series I like. I always worry either the questions will never get answered do to another writer coming on board or that they will get answered in another series I don't read. My second complaint was the lead in to the next story arc. I was just... very abrupt. I'm not sure why it couldn't have just waited till the next "issue" but maybe once I've read the next one I'll like the lead in better.
Much more action in this one as Secret Invasion kicks off (which I had already read the main run of so I did know what was going on!). Lots of Skrull punching, and I do like it when Carol punches thing. Good to get a tiny bit of background on Agent Sum too.
The mystery of William being a Kree or whatever still crawls along.. As does this boring romantic subplot with Wonder Man. I do wish Carol could be a bit smarter. And make less questionable decisions. Her flaws make her interesting but I'm getting a but frustrated with her now. Issue 30 and she's still not pulled herself together! I prefer the newer Captain Marvel version of her!
Still horrid Greg Horn covers. The one where she is boobs out in a tacky army uniform make me want to vomit (#29). I did like Adriana Melo's art, and the colours really pop, until I noticed how insane Carol's boobs are. They defy anatomy and gravity in ways that don't even resemble a real human breast.. Never mind the (to be expected *sigh*) proportions! So oddly shaped.. And pointy! Not what I'd expect from a female artist. Also there are too many panels where your just staring at her bum because her stupid costume has gone right up her crack. That cannot be comfortable.
If I was rating this on Brian Reed's dialogue and plotting alone this would be a five star. This is a tie-in to a mega-crossover-event done right. Things are happening but this story is all about Carol and could have easily been one of her story lines without the event (granted there would be more explanation here if it wasn't tied in to the event). Carol is a bad-ass here. She is an Amazon and revels in the fight. I think this volume is really where I fell in love with Ms. Marvel. She is flawed and human, but she is also strong and fierce.
The star comes off because of the costume and art in general, It's no wonder that when she becomes Captain Marvel her costume changes. In some scenes where she's kicking ass, it's hard to notice anything but Her ass. She's a warrior but her ass and thighs are hanging out. Her nipples are super obvious in a few side panels as well and that just makes me shake my head. Granted there's nothing wrong with a woman's body, but if Carol was actually serious about being the best, it's hard to think that she wouldn't have thought "maybe I should get a costume that doesn't become a thong when I bend over."
