Tini Howard and Celor bring something more to the normally irrationally very soft-porn exploits of the young woman Cassie Hack who mostly likes to kill the Hell out of serial killers and other monsters. Something more that makes the characters more likeable and the books a better read. Cassie essentially retired at 25, now a professional gamer living on a mountain.. alone with her cat Dario. Suddenly she is dragged back into the world of blood, monsters and slaughter when zombies appear to be targeting her! An invite to a kid's camp from a friend of her .. serial killing dead mum seems a way out, but as this is Hack/Slash it is anything but! 7 out of 12, Three Stars

Yet another book that has two separate editions on GR for no apparent reason :( Here's my original review:

An interesting one! So Hack/Slash is back and I'm thankful for it! There was an attempt to revive the series with Hack/Slash: Son of Samhain, which I thought was decent but sadly many others didn't think so. So the story has Cassie being retired from her Slasher Killer days and is now living a normal life, that is until she is hired to be a camp counselor at a camp that teaches kids how to fight slashers! One thing I think this series gets right is the black humor of the original series which made me feel right at home with this one. Overall in terms of the story, it really does try to bring everything back to the status quo, where Son of Samhain tried to go in a different direction. If you liked the original series direction I think you will enjoy it. I enjoyed this series for the most part and it gave me what I wanted. I guess my only criticism of the story is Cassie herself, shes still the Slasher hunting smart mouth we know, but a lot of her decisions in the story, especially near the end made her hard to relate to. I mean Son of Samhain at least made Cassie deal with her grief with the aftermath of the original series and grow her as a character. This series just tries its best to get everything back to the way they were, which part of me appreciates, but another part feels like they didn't do anything new.

This series real Achilles Heel though is the artwork, my god is it ugly to look at! I mean its serviceable at times, but often characters look like clay models or characters from a PlayStation 1 game! I just hope the art changes in the next issue!

But overall despite my complaints, I did really enjoy this one and I think any Hack/Slash fan will enjoy this series! But like I said, I'm just happy to have Hack/Slash back!

After having read the original, this just didn’t stand up for me. Certain things that happened at the end were completely ignored. Maybe those storylines just haven’t developed yet?

The Hack/Slash series is my favorite horror comic book series. I am a long time Hack/Slash fan. I have read all the omnibus and the one-shots. I have met the creator/writer/artist Tim Seeley at comic cons; he is actually a really nice guy that does not charge to autograph your comic books.

So, when I saw that there is a new ongoing series I was delighted....However, this is not up to par with classic Hack/Slash stories or art work. The great news: Vlad is back! And that is about it for the good news.

Cassie is sad, moody, and angry (more than usual) and is hiding out in the woods. She has given up slasher hunting for the hermit life. However, zombies keep coming to her shack to attack her. This gets the story going on the right path, however it goes down hill quickly with an uneven story that does not develop the plot or characters at all. It also leaves a glaring question unanswered that is treated as an after thought: how did Vlad come back from the dead? I can understand that this could be explained in future issues, but there is no indication of that in this trade. The head camp counselor and the evil doctor at the penitentiary are very generic and boring.

The art work is terrible. I mean it seriously sucks! The line drawing is edgy and sloppy. At time the human forms look like they are deformed. The coloring has very little change in tones making the art look flat and uninteresting.

I am highly disappointed in this book. The plot does not work as an interesting story nor does it work as a fun all-out slasher fight fest. Hopefully a new writer and artist can save the series.

This was funny, entertaining slasher graphic novel with some very adult content, including lots of sexy times and grotesque violence. The comic was quite fan-service-y in places with the main character frequently running around in her panties. Yet, overall I found the story very enjoyable. There was a lot of humour, as the writers played with the classic tropes of the slasher horror genre.

Pretty turgid writing, nothing remotely special except for the slightly-creative cursing.

Reasonably average art - camera work is good, but the bodies and faces are so ridiculously inconsistent (let alone poorly sketched) that I connect not at all with the story.

No real sense of dread here - not even a little threat to our “hero” Cassie, and no one at all seems in danger of losing anything they care about, or has any reason to try to be a better person. Oy.

In fact, after slogging through this whole mess, I revise my initial impression: the writing is *sloppy*, not turgid. It’s *trying* for something emotionally varied, but it hurks and jerks so spastically that there’s no believable journey for everyone. I love you, I hate you, let’s wantonly Jill everything, no more killing, I don’t need you, let’s gang up and take these zombies down. What the fuck, did someone take a slasher machete to the script and just chop out the connective bits?

And I’m bored as shit with the ass-shots and boobs hanging out - especially when it neuters any agency or self-determination the women might otherwise achieve.

Fuck Sims and Wilson for their fake enthusiasm for the latest Hack to show up for an interview on their podcast. When they're *not* afraid of taking a strong negative opinion, their reviews are pretty solid; but every single time I run for the football of something they sound so enthused about from an interviewee, it turns out to be fucking garbage. Check every one of the reviews on my found-via-war-rocket-ajax bookshelf - I'll be amazed if anything there ranked three stars or more, and I'm ashamed if I gave any of it even 2 stars.

This is your typical slasher/zombie horror with fun one-liner humour, a simple plot: kill or be killed, and unnecessary sex. I think this is the 3rd Hack/Slash I've read. It's not the best but it wasn't the worst either. The plot was bland and the colour is atrocious but I couldn't help being entertained. I love Cassie's snarky humour and one can't help but love the big simpleton, Vlad. Not really suitable as a first introduction to the characters but fans will enjoy.

I missed you Cassie.
Still, I just really really wish that they’d let you wear more clothes.
A bad ass hunting horror movie monsters in fishnet and a miniskirt is just not as cool as one in jeans.
I mean, denim is much harder to bite through!

Not quite what i thought it would be. I guess, it would have been helpful if I knew anything about the first issues. I missed context of some relationships by only reading this revival. Also, I thought there'd be more zombies. 😔

So we have the return of Hack and Slash. Really, this resurrection seemed a little forced but still, this is comics and it's to be expected. This story had really sexy art, but the story was only okay. We did get Vlad back, and there was some zombies and secret experiments and such.

It just felt a little lacking to me. The story was a little confusing in parts and I think the story overall could have been stronger.

Still, Hack/Slash is always a fun read, and this was no exception. Maybe now that things are back on track the next volume will be smoother.

Excellent return of Cassie Hack, who has been living in a trailer in the boonies with her cat, Dario. She's been making a living playing monster-killing video games and is offered a job at Camp Indigo River as a counselor for a group of children who've been affected by violence and the supernatural. Excellent story and art. My only complaint is the absence of Pooch. Hopefully he will reappear in a future issue. Good to see Vlad again. Very highly recommended.

I loved the original series, blazed through all 5 omnibi in short order, and try and re-read them around Halloween just to put me in the spirit. I didn't expect them to revive the same kind of spirit and humor here, that would be sort of pointless in a sequel to a series that ended, but it still left me more than a little cold. I don't know. Cassie Hack seemed more eye candy here than she did in the original series. In that one it was at least done with a wink and tongue firmly in cheek, lampooning the horror genre. Here it rang as hollow. Also SPOILER BELOW

The major gut punch of the original series, the death of Vlad is just POOF, fixed. Vlad's back! Yay! That seemed so cheap to me. To have brought him back, undoing the whole point of the ending.

This was my first time reading any of the Hack/Slash comics so I think it would have helped more to have done a little research first. I liked the main character who was a prickly and no nonsense type. She grudgingly leaves her self-imposed exile to help at a camp for kids who have experienced trauma. The undead and sinister plots follow her as she fails to lay low and be left alone.

I read this in individual comics. I have been a fan of the series for a long time and was happy to see it come back! It is always nice to see the young woman win over the slasher/monsters and Cassie certainly has style in how she does it. Vlad is back as well in this enjoyable read. I would still recommend going back to the beginning of the comic but new fans would have no problem starting here.

The concept of the Hack/Slash series is fascinating, but I always end up being disappointed and this volume is no exception. Are my expectations too high?

Cassie Hack's series ended on a definitive and mostly happy note but the thing about comic book heroes is they never really have their stories end. The premise of the series has always been, essentially, an R-rated Buffy the Vampire Slayer that was always based on 80s Slasher movies to begin with.

Cassie Hack is a "Final Girl" who survived her mother becoming an immortal zombie serial killer and spent her life hunting down the undead killers that populated her world. Well, Cassie couldn't survive living a happy ending and has ended up--I kid you not--one of those sexy Twitch girl who monetize being watched by horny geeks as they play video games..

*pause*

Yeah, I'd watch ti. Don't judge me.

Then she gets inhibited to a Summer camp by a beautiful blonde upbeat girl she begins an affair with, protects a bunch of orphans, and gets the resurrection of her best friend Vlad. It essentially resets the series, ends in both triumph as well as tragedy, and uses a substitute for Herbert West: Reanimator.

It's very much a comic designed to "put things back in their place" after change made the comic not as fun as it used to be. Sort of like THE REIGN OF SUPERMAN. That slows down the story considerably but not to make it less enjoyable. I liked Cassie's girlfriend in this story and honestly wish she'd become a main character.

This was definitely a review whose rating I had to "math". It got good scores from me for the story, the characters, and the art style (though Laurie and her mother look the same age, which isn't great). It got bad scores for poor overall explanation and male gaze-iness. So much male gaze-iness. Ergo, an average 3 star rating. I'd never heard of Hack/Slash before coming across Resurrection. I knew from reading the back that I was jumping into an already established series, but I'd hope there would be some hand holding considering this seems to be a reboot for the series. For most of the volume, I was able to follow along pretty well without them explaining things ala "Previously on Hack/Slash", but the last few issues threw a lot at me, what with returning characters, reanimating dead people, and whether or not the world at large knows about this "slasher" thing. I think I'll check out the next volume and from there, I'll decide if I want to continue or not.

I expected to like this reboot/continuation more than the original run, but I didn't. Don't get me wrong, it's good and the fan service is (thank god) removed without removing the sexual overtones.

I think the focus being re-centered on personal relations and Cassie working through her shit, while the actual slasher stuff was put on the back burner a bit wasn't what I was looking for (at least not in volume 1). Also, the zombies were boring, the kids were under-utilized and I didn't really buy the motivations of the camp director or the scientist. I guess I wish this one had been more fun.

However, I still love Vlad (for a second there I thought they were leaving him out of this) and Cassie's awesome as always.

I really love Hack/Slash in theory but I find the original series very hard to get through for several reasons so I really enjoy spinoff series like this by other writers. Really fun volume and I enjoyed the art style as well [thank god the first few pages are actually a video game, I saw that and immediately was like 😬 but it got way better after that]. Seems a shame that there's only one more volume after this but I will definitely read it soon!

This was the second volume I’ve read from this series. This bore no resemblance to the previous story. This one involved the protagonist playing babysitter to a bunch of kids being trained as killers. Some doctor can conveniently create zombies as well.
This was just poor at every level- art, story, characters.

Perhaps this wasn’t the right place to enter the series? Cassie Hack is an OK protagonist, but this book never manages to make me care about her. Does she kill? Yes. Does she flirt and feel the stirrings of desire? Yes. Does she experience horrible suffering and injustice? I guess so. But from this book, it wasn’t possible for me to care.

The villains and slashers/monsters are entirely without personality or threat. It makes for several odd scenes, where there is zero doubt that Cassie will triumph and there is no real energy around the outcome of a scene or chapter.

So there is gore galore and f-cks aplenty, but in the end it wasn’t outrageous enough to shock me, it wasn’t warm enough to hold may attention. Perhaps the first series is a better beginning.

Fun & interesting. I was thrown a little off-kilter by some rushed moments and overall the pacing never felt quite right, at times too slow and others too fast... overall, I’m pretty pleased with this resurrection.
