Elana Black. Saving the day even if she has to tear a hole in the universe to do it.
An unbeatable mythological horror has its sights set on Elana, and that's not the worst of her problems. Gods want to use her, shadowy agents want to eliminate her, and a powerful sorcerer wants to kill her; all as she rushes to stop an event which portends the death of her best friend. It's all catching up with her, and just in time for Christmas. Elana is going to have to figure out how all of it is connected but she's in over her head, outnumbered, and running out of time.
And she always thought magic would make her life easier.
WARNING CALL is book two of the award-winning, best selling series, The Black Pages. Audiobook available soon.
Whoever said bad luck came in threes must have encountered the Nuckalavee. Although if they had, it was doubtful they would be around to speak such sage advice. Unfortunately, with her new powers and a proposition from the divine, one now has Elana in its sights, and it will stop at nothing to get to her. Everyone knows her weakness, the innocent, her friends. It is one of the worst demons in existence, and that it would come for her seems to reveal a lot about the one who summoned it, Kodran Osvifsson. He doesn't care who or what stands in his path, he will be the champion, the one to end Elana forever, and with such power at his disposal, it seems Freyr chose his champion well.
Warning Call is a fast-paced action-packed read with magic, mayhem, monsters, and scheming. It is difficult not to be drawn into the well-scripted first-person narrative of Elana. Her friends are vibrant characters with distinct personalities, flaws, and motivations. Warning Call was a fun and gripping read, and would appeal to a wide audience, especially lovers of urban fantasy.
I loved this second book in the series even more than the first. The story is fast paced from the beginning as Elana is beset by a variety of challenges including hideous creatures, while trying to keep her friends alive. I really like Chalsarda as a character and some of the evil characters are great fun in a very nasty way! I loved what happened to Kodran! I am quickly moving on to book 3 in the series, which says it all!
Fast paced, imaginative and exciting. The book hits the road running. Elana has made enemies and allies in the world of magic, but sometimes it's hard to know which is which and who to trust. Elana has the impossible task choosing between sacrificing herself or her friend Olivia to save Lucia. People are prepared to help her but they all have their own agendas. But first she has to defeat an undefeatable monster three times. Elana is not alone in her quest. She has a group of friends prepared to risk their own lives to help her. I enjoyed the style of writing and the humour. Fascinating story, with an interesting comment on friendship and the conflicting demands on people in power. I haven't read the first book in the series, so it did take me a while to fully understand what was going on and the various relationships. Although the book does work as a standalone I'd recommend reading the first book in the series before this one.
Warning Call is a great follow up for book one, Empty Threat. Fast paced, intense adventure, and great tie-in with the mythological makes for an interesting and fun read. Highly recommend!
Definitely more intense than the first book, and answers a lot of questions that were leftover. I'm still a huge fan of Elana, though I kind of want to noogie the savior-complex out of her head. And I am tremendously pleased with Chalsarda.
This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:
The second book in the series is even faster, crazier and more magical than the first one...:)
Elana is in trouble, big trouble this time... Again, the book starts quite innocently, with a short outing with a friend into the mountains. What could go wrong with that, right? Well... it's Elana, so you cannot expect everything to go according to plan...:) And then it starts: monsters, gods, sorcerers - everyone wants Elana, most of them want her dead... And all she wants is to save Olivia, a friend she feels she let down in the past...
The plot is crazy as hell, fast as hell and magical as hell :) We get more insight into the system of magic, and I still don't grasp it in its entirety - but that's OK, Elana doesn't either :) There are more characters we deal with than in book one, and they play more important parts in the story. They are very well written, complex and with secrets of their own, which makes them intriguing and believable. And although the book may be read as a standalone, there's definitely an opening for the next installment in the series - and you do want to continue with Elana's adventures :)
Narration by Ms Frank is as good as in book one - she does the individual voices really well, with the personality of the characters shining through her words. She's also great at conveying emotions; we do feel them while listening to her.
DISCLAIMER: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
A sequel to Empty Threat, this book follows the adventures of Elana Black and her friends (Elf and human) as they deal with magic, bureaucratic sorcerers, and an overbearing goddess. It gets even more interesting when Elana must face the possibility of having to sacrifice a friend for the greater good.
I really enjoyed this book. I always love it when subsequent books from a writer are even better than the first and this fits the bill. Fast-paced and witty, the main character is flawed, but always trying to learn while failing at the same time. All the characters have an arc and the action is terrific. There is never a dull moment, but it’s paced well so you don’t feel exhausted. Also, my favorite line was, "It tastes like pork mimosa."
I read the first book in the series a while ago, so I'd forgotten some of the story line, but it was easy to pick up again as I continued to read.
There's so much depth and intricacy to the story. You get to travel between worlds and see the "real" lives of fictional characters. Elana, the story protagonist, has even been able to change the outcome of published stories and TV shows. All such a great, unique concept.
The Norse mythology (oh, excuse me, Freya, I mean "history") was fascinating to read. I thoroughly enjoyed the author's portrayal of all the characters. It's a nice change from so many books that focus on only Greek mythology.
The story moves along at a fast, intense pace. I was never sure what was going to happen from one moment to the next. Expect the unexpected. A great, entertaining read from start to finish.
So I started this one at 10pm which was a horrible idea because I stayed up until 6am to finish it. And still had to get up and go to work. So needless to say that was a super bad idea. But I loved the story. This one picks up where book one left off and its even better than the first one. This one had a lot of quips to keep you giggling throughout the pages, and so much action. I love this world where you can walk within the pages of stories and I couldn't put it down. I will say that at the start of this one I felt a little lost but that pasts pretty quickly.
Warning call: A Novel of the Black Pages by Danny Bell is an extremely creative young adult action-packed fantasy. With fantastic dialogue, characters battle across the pages of a novel to the electrical discharge of a television screen. For example: “I won’t go down in history as the man outsmarted by an idiot.” “From what I can tell, you’re not going down in history at all!” I chuckled when I read that but don’t worry, there are many more great one liners still to be discovered. A 5star Read!
Elana battles monsters, gods and the occasional sorcerer to rescue an old friend and save the world in this second story in the Black Pages series. There's lots of action and some very interesting characters, some sympathetic, others, not at all. I loved the diversity of the mythologies and thoroughly enjoyed Elana's efforts to win her battles by outsmarting rather than out-muscling her oponents. A good story, and the Audible version is made even better by the excellent narration of Whitton Frank. Epic fantasy in a modern world.
Get swept up in this fantasy world, where Elana and her friends travel in and out of worlds, books, and TV. Fiercely protective of her friends and the innocents in her adventures, she faces the non-stop action and challenges that come her way all the time wondering how she is going to survive each. This is my first 'audible' book and I found the voice of the reader pleasant, her character depiction enjoyable, and the clarity of both voice and sound excellent.
Warning Call: A Novel of the Black Pages is clearly the sequel to an earlier story, and as such is difficult to follow at first, and at other points in the narrative. Unusually this is a fantasy story with American-styled humour, which at times for me seemed out of place. The overall story was fine although it did drag in the middle. The antagonist, in this case a dark character, to me was underdeveloped. Although well-written, Warning Call didn't really grab me.
An excellent follow-up adventure to EMPTY THREAT, featuring a great focus on the relationships Elana has with her friends as well as the enemies and other challenging folks who are now a part of her life. A great story performed brilliantly by the narrator. Looking forward to the next adventure in this series!
Well, that was a fun read. Lots of energy here. Teen lovers of urban fantasy will eat this up. Kinda fun for me, being an Angelino myself. So much going on. Perfect YA fantasy.
I picked this up, having read the first book and wanting to continue the story. I think I missed a book between the two, but nevertheless I was soon able to work out what was going on, and was pulled into the story as if I'd never been away. Elana has a choice to make, save one, or lose one, and she's not happy with either option. The story is beautifully told, and keeps you immersed in the world with ease. I adore Bell's descriptions and the way he sets the scene and this book is no different. An amazing read and left on a note that makes you want the next book ASAP. Overall, highly recommended!
It’s so hard to pick up the second book in a series when it jumps right in and you’re stuck wondering if you should plunge forward or stop to review the first book!
Whereas I felt the first book was lovely and brought favorite books and tv to life, this was more rooted in the current real world; with characters - fictional or mythical - were grounded and living amongst us. It’s not how I hoped the series would progress, but I suppose it was the natural order of series.
Maybe if I had picked this up immediately after the first, I wouldn’t have had much time to anticipate a higher climax or forgotten so much. Even after a relisten to the first, it still didn’t grab me the way the first had. I tend to dislike recaps of previous adventures/books and had not expected it to be necessary since the first was a flawless stand alone.
I found Alana’s personality rivaling the author’s pen. Although she’s still coming to terms with her known and unknown abilities and the havoc it’s causing, her growth is stunted and mood swings likens a bully on the playground - it’s all over the place in a manic pendulum.
“It’s pretty good” is the Audible explanation for three stars, and it fits my overall satisfaction for the book. The series will undoubtedly find more hardship and villains for Alana and her clan to defeat to protect our world, but I may sit it out. I liked the newer naive Alana who only wanted happily ever afters; this one grew balls she hasn’t managed to handle yet, causing a pause as I ponder if a missing 1.5 book would help tie it together - and I regularly avoid those!
