THIS series should be subtitled, "FOUND FAMILY DONE RIGHT" because it's, just. Perpetually stellar in how it handles the relationships between the characters.

This time the spotlight was on Sinha, and what it's like for him when he uses the dragon's eyes...and we learn precisely why Ao told him to NEVER use them...and why he decides to use them anyway to protect Yona. Of course, Yona herself is wonderful and is exactly what Sinha needs during his resulting crisis, and it's all just...so beautiful. <3

Love, love, love this series sooooo much. <3

Akatsuki no Yona: my fantasy manga of choice. Yona is a determined girl. She is made of metal, Yona is. Despite Hak's refusal to teach her how to use a sword, she doesn't give up, and goes so far as to steal one of her comrade's swords in order to train herself. It is a reverse harem, yes, but not a mindless one as most are. All the characters get a good deal of attention, a backstory, and their interactions are nuanced and fun.

Yona's the best, guys.

“Ik-soo, the group that you prophesied would shake the country of Kouka are nothing but idiots! But they’re idiots that are laughing even when they’re hungry. It’s like they’ll find a way to smile even in the more difficult things.”

This was hilarious and yet, really deep and touching at the same time.

While the Yona of the Dawn was great it seems like it was nothing but an introduction to what the story truly is about and I can't be more excited about that. The elements that the earlier volumes establish are starting to take shape here, to become more prominent and we can see them evolving nicely. I'm sure they'll develop further as we get deeper into the story but it's already becoming quite magnificent.

Of course, with such a colorful cast we can't forget the shenanigans that they get into and, oh boy, were they so incredibly hilarious and endearing all at the same time.

As fun and lighthearted as the story can be it is really good at striking a good balance between its humor and the incredibly serious notes that it needs to touch upon. The number of times that I just need to pause and think a little more over the thematic of the volume was so much fun.

This was, clearly, Shin-ah's volume, though. We get to explore a little bit more of his full range and what it all means for him. He is so sweet and just needs to build up that confidence in himself.

In the end, I laughed a lot and had a great time even when my heart was being pulled and squeezed. I can't wait to see where Yona goes from here and how she is going to solve anything of what is wrong right now.

“Anyway, if I have to attract attention just to live I must try standing out boldly, right?”

Volume 9 picks up where Volume 8 left off with Yona and crew back at Ik-su's place. Yun is visiting a poor Fire Tribe village and the rest of the gang decides to tag along, which results in some pretty unexpected outcomes.

And with this volume The Black Dragon and the Happy Hungry Bunch are born! I love the name the gang has chosen for themselves; the ridiculousness of it lends to some pretty funny jokes and I like that the HHB never take themselves too seriously. I feel like I say this every time, but the different interactions and dynamics between the characters never ceases to amuse or endear me to them, they're so sweet and funny.

This volume also has some chapters which focus on Shin-ah, and the trauma he's faced as a child. There's a lot to unpack with his character, especially when it comes to his power, and I found the darker nature of the Blue Dragon particularly interesting.

We also get further exploration of the Fire Tribe lands, and through the shenanigans of this volume we're able to see the type of political turmoil that goes on in the Fire Tribe. I'm looking forward to eventually seeing more of every tribe.

Well, if anything can get me to reallyyyy like Yona, it would be helping the precious bean Sinha…

VERY good volume specifically because we get SO much of Sinha and my poor heart ached SO much for him! It was a moment I was so glad that I could "live" through Yona and how she was willing to sacrifice herself. Everything in that one pivotal moment was so heartbreakingly beautiful and felt so deeply touched. It's a time I can say that I was deeply thankful for every word the main character said. Sinha just became all the more dear to me and ever cheering for him (and I guess Yona too with that declaration she tells him). <3 (Also Sinha smiling!!! *sobs profusely*)

I admire how this mangaka can take very deep topics and themes and be able to seamlessly weave in humor so that this story isn't too heavy. Yona and the crew are seeking to actively make change and was touched that it was one of the villages Yun has visited to do so first (even though that probably wasn't planned LOL). I felt he (Yun) had a great bonding moment with Yona and really appreciate his character and was also fun seeing some new shenanigans from the gang. (Yona acting like Gi-Gan was awesome!)

I will also add that goodness, Jaeha looked AWESOME from the back as he declares he use to be a pirate and will always be in "trouble" with the government. SO cool! He's not my favorite dragon (not in a bad way, just I ADORE Sinha and LOVE Gija so much!), but I really really appreciate his character too and love when he has cool moments like that.

That cliffhanger of an ending! Ughhhh! An epic building up, only to have to wait until the next volume! ;P Looking forward to seeing what happens next with the Kang Tae-Jun!

Wait but this volume was so good!

Yona and gang are in the fire nation (lol) and are combatting corrupt officials. They become "bandits" and try and help out. Sinha reveals his eyes/powers, some innocent moments of Yona/Hak, and then the ending with that one fire prince lmao.

I can't wait for my library hold of the next ones to be readyyyyyyy. I've missed these characters.

Check out more manga and graphic novel reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...

This is a review of volumes 9-10 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.

Princess Yona is the pampered daughter of her kingdom's king. Isolated and doted on she has two childhood friends, Hak, a general who also protects her and her cousin, Soo-won who helped her mourn her mother's passing and who she is crushing on big time. On her 16th birthday her entire world implodes to to a crippling betrayal... She must decide if she will fall in line or rise up and take back her kingdom.

Yona of the Dawn vol 9-10 feature a character we met briefly in an early volume when he tried to assault Yona and Hak has to pull him off. He's a pretty despicable character, Lord Tae-jun but I totally fell for him!! I think he is just so real... he's a mealy guy because he's always been under the thumb of his martial father and brother who make Su-won look like an angel! His growth isn't hurried either and I really appreciated that... it started with small things, he witnessed Yona's example and he is accepted warily by the dragons, Hak and Yun.

A lot of why you'll fall for him too is how he is drawn by the mangaka even though he is too pathetic! Seriously, his frames are packed with humor from his facial expressions, to his exaggerated actions, the the little hopping way he walks as he hurries to help the villagers!! Even his assistant who is to look after him contributes to how amusing Tae-jun is because he is so dry and reactionless at all that his master does, lol. We also get some PERFECT shots with Yona that take your breathe away at how much she's grown!! (These are the cherry on top...)

Yona of the Dawn vol 9 starts with us and Yona and her gang totally puzzled at what to do next... It's a brave way to continue now that we have all the dragons gathered. And it was quite organic to what is going on with Yona emotionally. It's one thing to lead in the moment when the right thing to do is pretty clear in front of you... It's a whole different thing when we're talking about war and fighting for something when there is someone equally as passionate of the other side!

I was just going with the flow of the story (I enjoyed the scenes with Yona defending the Blue Dragon!) when Lord Tae-jun was introduced! He made Yona of the Dawn vol 10 pop!! Like Su-won Yona will need people in position who trust her to know what to do for the people. It's actually pretty essential she show why her perspective is one for others in the kingdom to adopt. And we see such a pathetic person become a person of note because of her perspective. And the Yellow Dragon actually has a unique relationship with Tae-Jun that was cute!

There were so many little moments with different dragons, between Hak and Tae-jun, the dragons and Tae-jun, that the tension was really high! I actually really rooted for the entire gang to somehow do there magic and inspired the people to help themselves... and that they did the same for Tae-jun was a really neat bonus! This is really a story about leadership and inspiring others with the right perspective, one with hope and confidence, something they didn't have under her father...

I'm sad to say goodbye to Lord Tae-Jun at the end of Yona of the Dawn vol 9-10, but he has work to do in the Fire Tribe and Yona has to figure out what her next move is... The dragons support her no matter how small or large her desires... Even Hak has made to move to show that he will even do things to support her that he is totally against... It makes for a powerful vote of confidence!

I was really impressed as a writer how Mizuho Kusanagi used Tae-jun as a way to give this part of Yona's story, a rather formless and aimless plot, body and direction! First, she admits that no one knows what Yona needs to do next, what?! Really though why would Yona know?! She hasn't wanted to think about Su-won and everything that's happened so she's been taking it day by day. Now putting one foot in front of the other isn't enough! She has to decide and start leading... And she starts that with Tae-jun, it was brilliant!!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

November 2025 Reread: At least I got to read them in the proper order this time, lol!

I laughed so much at these incredible dorks, I forgot how funny this part was! And Sinha’s power seemed much scarier and intense this time around, wow; I’m so glad Yona was there for him through it all.

And the ending of this volume will never get old, lol. 🤣

********

May 2021 Review: Yes, I went from volume four to volume nine. Why? Because the library system only has one copy of each and someone else checked out the next few volumes. This happens every time I try out a new series. 😒 Does it annoy me? Yes, yes, it does. But, oh well, I know enough from the anime episode overviews and since this one starts where they left off I think I’ll be just fine. ☺️

I LOVE these characters and their dynamics with each other—I would gladly join The Happy Hungry Bunch! I cracked up laughing about half a dozen times and what Sinha had to go through with his power... 😭 I love how Yona handles it and loves him through it all—she’s such a great friend. All of these guys just care about each other so much, and I love it. 🥰 About the only characters I don’t know as well are Jaeha and Zeno though I’m loving getting to know both boys.

And the way it ended cracked me up! Just toss him, why don’t you, Gija? 🤣

I think I need to be resuscitated for I am DECEASED. This whole ass volume??? It gave me life. You hear me? LIFE!!

Okay, to be clear this volume was completely focused on Yona and the gang or the Dark Dragon and the Happy Hungry Bunch, LOL. We start off this volume as our gang continue to provide food and protection to fire territory villagers. There a mission where most of the group have to leave and they leave Yona and Sinha on their own in order to watch over the town. A group of bandits come to take over the village and Yona isn't able to do anything. A child is killed and while both Yona and Sinha attempt to fight them off, there are only two of them, and Yona is taken.

Sinha is beaten down, but hears Yona screaming after him and he finally takes off his mask and defeats the bandits with the piercing stare of his dragon eyes. He almost loses himself in the revelry as he's never used his eyes like this before, but Yona brings him back. We got to see more background into Sinha and how he feels about his powers and then what he's actually capable of. Which was EPIC.

This was one of my favorite volumes so far and was it because it focused on Sinha???? Maybe... Anyways. Happy Reading!

Alright, everything from this volume on is not included in the first season of the anime (At this point in time, they haven't made a second season. THEY SHOULD!)

Anyway, Yona and friends are trying to figure out what they want to do now that they've gathered all the dragons. A good place to start is a village near Ik-su's house.

Let's just say things get a little crazy and ridiculous then someone removes Sinha's mask. Ever wonder what his dragon eyes do? It's scary.

Two things are for sure:

First, the ending scene is pure laugh trip! HAHAHA! 🤣

And second, Sinha's finally found the way to give himself the chance he deserves. Thanks to Yona and her friends with a funny group name. 🥰😆

2025 Reread:
Wer denkt Yona ist nur eine Romance hat weit gefehlt. In diesem Band wird der düstere Ton nochmals um EINIGES düsterer. Und es passt trotzdem so gut, diese Mischung zwischen Romance/Action/Drama.

Not me starting the series where anime left off (though I will surely read the first 8 volumes at some point).
Anyway, I loooved this, which I honestly did expect, but I didn't expect I'd like it even more than the anime. Can't wait to see where the story goes next!

Yona of the Dawn Volume 9 is a pivotal volume, bringing together all four Dragon Warriors with the official inclusion of Zeno, the Yellow Dragon. Now a complete unit, dubbed the "Happy Hungry Bunch," (What a weird fucking name but cute too) they journey into the Fire Tribe's territory, only to discover widespread famine and oppression caused by corrupt officials. This dire situation makes Yona and her companions take action, leading them to embark on a Robin Hood-esque mission: subtly disrupting the corrupt system by redistributing resources from the powerful to the starving populace. This volume truly shines in its increased focus on Shin-ah, the Blue Dragon. His deepening backstory, coupled with his unwavering resolve to protect Yona, is compelling, and seeing his powers revealed was badass and a bit scary.

This volume showcases Yona's continued growth as a leader. She's shedding her sheltered past and confronting the harsh realities of her kingdom head-on, a transformation that's genuinely inspiring to witness. The dynamics within the "Happy Hungry Bunch" also remain a constant source of amusement. Their playful banter and bonds provide much needed levity amidst their serious situation, making their journey even more engaging as they work together to aid the common people.

However, the volume isn't entirely without its flaws. The final two chapters unfortunately dedicate a bit too much attention to the perpetually obnoxious character who betrayed Yona in Volume 1. While his swift leave is satisfying, the page count feels somewhat wasted on such a detestable figure. Despite that, the volume largely succeeds, emphasizing the growing camaraderie within the "Happy Hungry Bunch" and hinting at Su-won's ongoing activities, setting the stage for future developments.

Volume 9 picks up exactly where the anime leaves off! And since Yona of the Dawn is one of my very favorite animes and tragically had only one season, I naturally had to read the manga. Which learning to read right to left wasn't as hard as one first thinks.

This volume features gives the Happy Hungry Bunch and the Dark Dragon their name! Delightful and funny, although one very sad part does feature the death of a child (off-screen) as Yona continues to battle injustice.

Towards the end, we see the start of a redemption for a most unexpected character indeed.
