I've been waiting so long for this. I first stumbled upon a partial fan translation a few years back and have been going crazy trying to find more. I was over the moon when I saw that it was getting an official English translation and bought it the second it went up on Akadot.

The first volume has a lot of background and character establishment. Not a whole lot happens in the first volume but we do learn a lot about the personalities of our main characters Yuto and Dick (and really, I wish he had a different name). I can't wait for the next volume!

The illustrations are incredible. It is absolutely beautiful.

The manga is set in a prison so violence is inevitable. This is a little bit like a yaoi manga version of HBO's Oz. I'm not sure just how plausible the cons background stories are but hey, if you're looking for hyper realism why are you reading yaoi manga?

I'm a huge Saki Aida fan and I am hoping beyond hope that they will choose to translate the novel as well.

If you like sunshine and puppies then you probably shouldn't pick up a book that takes place in a prison but if you enjoy a bit of violence and some beautiful art, give this a try!

I have enjoyed reading it- so far it is an introduction and eliminating some characters from the MC suspicious people list...

I'd like to warn people who are getting into this manga without doing their reseach. I've read all 4 volumes and this manga has an open ending. The reason for it is because it covers only the first volume of the original novel. And the novel has 3 volumes (at least when it comes to the main story). Sooo, yeah. If you want to know what happens next, you'll have to pick up the original novel. I don't know if they are planning to adapt the remaining volumes into manga or not, but currently it is what it is.

About the manga itself. I enjoyed my time with it overall. It's not perfect and there is a lot to nitpick, but the art is amazing and I really liked the characters and the moments of sweetness they had together. I might actually pick up the original novel because I really want to see them end up together for real this time.

This was an interesting investigative/prison story. The concept was original, clever and well executed.

However, it has A LOT of triggers - violence, racism, transphobia, threats of rape, mis-gendering.
It get that it's a prison and there's a lot going on, with some complex gang turf war stuff happening in the background, but a lot of things felt like gratuitous violence just for the sake of it. (This was especially true of later volumes)

So, while I found the crime aspect interesting, the plot wavered into pointless prison politics at times, even sometimes drifting into lectures about the American prison system.

I also found it strange that there's a bonus story at the end, which is apparently taken directly from the original source light novel. I'm not sure why this choice was made, but it didn't really add anything to what was included in the manga version, IMO.

It’s probably not an actual 5 but I just read a shit manga before this and I feel like rounding up 🤷‍♂️😅 I wasn’t expecting it to be this good! An intriguing plot, some decent characters, and it’s taking time to build it all properly without feeling too slow, so I’m interested to see where it goes.

Ähhh, nein.
Nein. Nein. Nein. Nein. Nein.

Why I read it: It seemed like a serious story.

Thoughts: IT WAS TOO SERIOUS OF A STORY. I understand this is based on a novel (or a short series of novels), and the topics are perfect for that. I also appreciate that it doesn't really pull any punches, and it doesn't somehow romanticise the prison experience the way the yakuza/mafia are often romanticised. Mind you, I like those romanticised crime stories a lot, but I don't know that you can deal with like, neo-nazis and prison rape in the same breath as your protagonist going all gooey over their romantic interest. Here, the tone remained consistenly grim throughout.

But for a first manga volume, this had way too much exposition, and it just felt like the focus of the story was to talk about the American prison system (including race, class, and gender tensions) rather than delivering the actual story, which would have been plenty interesting on its own! The reveal about what Yuto's character is doing in Schelger Prison (he's there to try and identify a dangerous cult leader who has been ordering terror attacks that get carried out on the outside; Yuto's own freedom hangs in the balance) is about a third of the way through this volume, and much of the remaining two thirds is still spent on talking about the rivalry between the Chicano and Black gangs in the prison, and Yuto ruling out potential suspects feels like an afterthought until very close to the end of the volume.

I'm sure this would work much better in prose, but as manga...I'm not sold on it. Also, the hot guys all just look alike? Yuto is just Dick with black hair, Mickey is Yuto with wavy hair, and Nathan is just Dick but he brushes his hair differently. Like, the artist is great, which is something I can tell based on how she drew characters outside of the main cast (a number of Black men, Latino men, white men, and even a group of trans women!) with a lot of skill and variety, but those four characters just look like the same guy but with different wigs on.

Also, the typeface the publisher chose for the back cover is terrible. One character is named DICK BURNFORD but because of the serifs and the spacing between letters it reads as DICK BUMFORD and I thought the author was just taking the piss. It was already painful to read a BL manga with a character named Dick, but also Bumford? Anyway, it's not Bumford.

Finally, I did google who the real cult leader guy was, and I can't even say I'm surprised. It kinda had to be him, I guess.

Would I read more: NO! This was depressing enough.

Would I reread it: No

Mismas vibes. Me encanta.

Deadlock is a four volume series where Yuto Lennix was falsely accused of murder, but will be given a shorter sentence if he figures out who the cult leader is. So, he is sent to Schelger Prison which is a prison in California. He is given 12 guys to look at based on the information the FBI were able to obtain. There is a lot of talk about how the guys at the prison deal with their urges since there are no women around, and there is at least one person so far that has shown an interest in Yuto. I do wonder how far they will go with that. The talk about it did die off some in the second half of the volume, but it will most likely come back in another volume.

This was an interesting volume. The premise is promising, but I’m not really sure how it is going to end up. I am interested in finding out how Yuto will go about looking into these 12 guys, but I am a little unsure how I feel about any sexual assaults that I could see happening in future volumes. It is four volumes, so there might not be too much about it, but as of the first volume, we had our first death. I also feel like something is going to happen to Matthew soon, as he is around Yuto, but we do not see much of him near the end of the volume. I will continue with this series, but I am not sure how quickly I will pick up the next volume.

I like a good prison story but I get a lot of Under Grand Hotel vibes, save for the extreme violence and the brutal rapes (so far?) from this one. Maybe it changes, maybe it won't. It's necessarily not a bad thing if it won't, it's just that UGH is one of my favorite BL manga. That art though, is gorgeous.

This is definitely an 18+ book with some trigger warnings. The first book starts off pretty slow but start pick up in the second book. And don’t worry the scraggly beard eventually bites the dust. This book has great representation of many different ethnicities, mixed ethnic families, and openly gay characters.
