Sumner Brothers #1

Born to Be My Baby

Rate this book
She didn’t want him home. He didn’t want to be there.

Finally something they could agree on.

Ben Sumner should have been on top of the world. Life was good.

His computer company was on the verge of going public, a move that would make him richer than he’d ever dreamed.

His best friend was getting married (translation: he’d have his pick of hot bridesmaids for the weekend — and only the weekend).

Instead, he was home for the first time in nearly ten years to bury his father — a loss he had yet to deal with and had no idea how to process.

And worse still, his parents had leveraged the family land and his childhood home to build a lodge that was too big for his mother to run on her own.

But there was one thing Ben knew about running a successful business — remove the emotions.

His plan was simple. Cut his mother’s outlandish budget, slash her pet projects, pay off the loan, and head back to his life in Seattle in a few months. It was a solid strategy.

Until she walked in, hell bent on keeping him from cutting his mother’s budget.

Maggie Lawrence was the untouchable beauty queen in high school who never knew he existed.

But she noticed him now. He made sure of it.

She may be the new manager the lodge (and still as gorgeous as ever), but Maggie would learn he was no longer the shy, quiet boy from high school.

He was used to being the boss. She was used to being in charge. What could possibly go wrong?

Update: Smug female sets out to make the man look like an idiot. Yuck. It’s not nice, it’s not sexy, it’s certainly not what I consider romantic. No man (or woman, for that matter) likes to be made a fool of, especially in public. Dnf

Lets imagine the situation. You are the (male) manager (not the owner) of a hotel. The boss's daughter arrives, seriously concerned about the financial viability of the hotel and expresses her concern that if the hotel doesnt meet the bank's loan agreement, the actual owner of the hotel will lose everything. EVERYTHING.

So, You - the manager- promptly send said daughter (who is the CEO of a successful company) off to clear a blocked toilet in one of the hotel rooms ( as a 'joke').

REALLY?? You force an unqualified person to do that? And it was a 'joke'??

I bet all the women reading would be up in arms at the sheer stupidity, et alone the utter crassness of your actions.

Now turn it around. The manager is a woman. The 'toilet unblocker' is a man. What difference does it make??

NONE

FFS, authors, STOP thinking it's 'sexy' and 'funny' to demean men like this. You wouldn't do it to a woman so why do it to a man.

Meh

An amazing start to a new series, that I am already in love with the Sumner family of six single brothers. They have all left Canyon Creek to start their careers but now to only return to after the death of father to help them mom with the lodge.

This story focuses on Ben and Maggie. Ben has a secret crush on Maggie. Maggie is now his mom's right hand the lodge, but they are deep trouble financially. Now Ben needs help the lodge survive, with many butting of heads between Maggie and Ben. Soon they find themselves with an amazing chemistry that they can not deny.

My favorit line from this book, that ties everything together, "True wishes lay where you least expect them- in family, health ....and love". I can't wait to read about the other brothers. I highly recommend this small town contemporary romance.

Maggie was over the top in her disdain of Ben. Nothing nice about humiliating another person male or female . After the toilet and the head of housekeeping incident I deleted the book. Ben was trying to help his mother and they treated him like crap. Adding this to my DNF list.

I am really fed

Up with all authors that feel it's okay to use The Lords name in vain. At this point I wish books could be rated as movies are. I am sick of starting a book and having to ditching because of foul language or sex scenes that leave nothing out. What is wrong with u people??? You can't write a book without stopping to that level? I guess I will go back to real authors that don't all that to sell a book

An absolutely fantastic start to what should be an amazing series. I loved this book and can't wait to read more about the Sumner family and the Lodge in Canyon Creek. This is a wonderful small town romance that pushes all sorts of emotional buttons. The Sumner's are a big loving family but all 6 boys have left Canyon Creek and started their lives elsewhere. When they are all called back after the death of their father they find their mother has been left in a bit of a financial bind and it will take all of them to help save the lodge and their mother's home.

This is Ben and Maggie's story. Maggie Lawrence has been their for Ben's mother all along and has worked with his parents on every stage of the lodge expansion. Having Ben come in and try and takeover now infuriates Maggie. She may not be as successful as the high and mighty Ben but she knows this business and won't let him kill his mother's dream.

Ben never expected to be living in Canyon Creek, CO again but he can't let his mother lose everything. Problem is working with Maggie, his high school crush, isn't going to be easy especially when he has to convince her that all their plans need to change.

What starts out as a war of wills turns into so much more as Ben and Maggie begin to work and play together.

A recommended read!

Maggie has been working at the Sumner lodge for years. She is grateful to John and Valerie for all the encouragement and support that they have given her. She was resigned to being the town drunk's daughter, but working as the manager of the lodge has given her confidence a boost. She's now working at putting together enough funds to run her own bed and breakfast one day. What she doesn't expect is John's sudden death.

Ben has become a successful businessman by writing exceptional code and creating software. He feels that life is taking him away from the coding he enjoys to the endless tasks of running a company, but he doesn't know what else to do. That's when he gets the news of his father dying. He rushes back home only to find out that his parents have expanded the lodge way too soon and have a huge loan.

Ben doesn't think his mother can manage on his own and is surprised to find Maggie at her side, helping her. It doesn't help him that he's been crushing on Maggie since high school. The two of them butt heads over changes and cuts that he want to make. And somewhere along the way they discover that they do indeed work well together, not just as work colleagues, but also as life partners.

Beautiful story. Loved the characters. So much depth and emotion. Very well dealt with. Looking forward to the rest of the brothers joining the lodge in the subsequent stories.

Born to be My Baby is the first book in the new Canyon Creek, CO, series.

Ben and Maggie, who knew each other in high school, battle over his family's lodge. His father recently passed away and his mother and Maggie want to continue plans for expansion. Ben wants to cut costs to prevent what he thinks is a strong possibility for foreclosure from the bank.

Maggie has been running the lodge with his mother, and they both know that expanding is the right thing to do.

How do they get Ben to back down on cutting costs, and what happens when Ben and Maggie realize they may want more from each other?

Very enjoyable book! I'm ready for more books in the series!

This is a fabulous start to the Sumner Family series. The family is consistent of six brothers. The family owns a lodge in Canyon Creek but all of the men have forged their way in their own professional journeys but are brought back by the father's death.
This is Maggie and Ben's story.
When Ben is brought back to Canyon Creek, it is for the loss of his father but he soon realizes that the family business is about to embark on an expansion process that was started before the untimely loss of his father. He now sees his mother and his old high school crush manning the business helm of this expansion. He has no idea of their abilities but is quick to pass judgement regarding their decisions . His mother is grieving the loss of the love of her life and Maggie may be an employee but is not family. He is there to help but may soon realize that these women may be so much more than even he realized.
Maggie Lawrence is a beautiful, sassy, outspoken women that has always been overlooked for her intelligence due to her classic good looks. She must work harder to prove herself and has always been told that she is not cut out for the business world. She has certainly proved herself the Mr. and Mrs. Sumner over the years and has become a valuable employee, friend and right hand woman to them. She is now like family. She knows that the loss of their father will be bringing all the men home what she doesn't see coming is Ben.
Ben is now back and comes face to face with the family lodge and his secret high school crush Maggie. The lodge had recently signed on to expand but Ben does not have faith in the women at the helm. His mother is grieving the loss of the love of her life and yes Maggie may be a valued employee but she is not family. Maggie soon realizes that Ben thinks that he is in charge and that she must step up , butt heads with him and show him that she is just not a pretty face!
I absolutely loved their banter and initial resistance for each other . It was a fabulous read!

Born to be My Baby

This book is an amazing beginning to this series with the Sumner family dealing with the sudden death of their patriarch of a heart attack at the age of fifty five. The six brothers were living across the country and no one was helping their mom and dad with the new expansion of their Canyon Creek lodge from the bed and breakfast that they were running except for Maggie Lawrence who was like a daughter to them and their manager. Maggie grew up with the boys and Ben always had a crush on her that he was too shy to follow though with this attraction. Little did he know that she felt the same way towards him but because she did not feel good enough because of how her alcoholic father talked down to her and made her feel inferior. The brothers decided that two of them, Ben who owned his own software company, and Emmett, a successful author would stay to help their mom first. The rest of the brothers would follow in a few months. Ben thought he had to get a handle on the expenses because of their loan but soon learned his mom, Valerie and Maggie were aware of everything they had to do to meet their loan deadlines. Sam bumping heads with Maggie just brought these two love birds closer together and a romantic relationship developed even though they thought it would be short term since Ben's company was in Seattle. How they healed each other and he helped her start to forgive her father so that she could open her heart to him was so amazing to read. This was a fantastic love story and shows how families need to communicate with each other better before it is too late. This is a great beginning to this series and I cannot wait to read Emmett and Elle's story next. I highly recommend this touching romantic book.

This is the first book in the series And introduces us to all of the Sumner brothers. This was Ben and Maggie’s story.

Ben is the eldest of the Sumner Brothers and the CEO of his own software tech company. He left Colorado years ago and never looked back. He was so determined to make his company successful and prove to his father that he could do it. Now he has been forced to go back to Colorado due to the unexpected death of his father. He has to deal with the

Maggie Lawrence has been working with Valerie and John Sumner for five years at the Lodge at Canyon Creek. They took her in and gave her a chance to prove herself. They gave her a chance at the family she never had with her own parents. Now that John has passed away the Sumner boys are back and she has to prove herself all over again especially to Ben.

Ben and Maggie knew each other in high school but neither of them thought the other noticed them. Maggie was popular, Ben was a little on the nerdy side, but he always thought Maggie was beautiful? We get to experience them finding themselves and each other in this book.

This book has good characters, a good storyline, some heartfelt moments and romance. The characters have some funny moments also. This can be read as a standalone since it is the first in a series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love this book, & thoroughly enjoyed reading it!  It is a touching
& emotional story. After an unforseen
tragedy, the Sumner brothers return home. After going through the finances,
they see that The Lodge, is in trouble.
Their parents, John & Valerie Sumner are expanding their business. Construction has already started. Maggie manages The Lodge, along side John & Valerie.
Ben has been in love with Maggie, since high school. But he didn't think she would notice a book nerd, like Ben.
Because of the type of loan they have
for the The Lodge expansion,
Ben & Maggie, are constantly at odds over it. He wants to cut everything.
She hopes that he will see what his parent's plans are for the future.
As the spend time together, even
with all the tension between them,
their connection is undeniable.
Ben's business, & life is in Seattle.
He is a workaholic. Ben enjoys women, without a commitment. Maggie was raised in Canyon Creek. She will always be grateful to John & Valerie for giving her a chance, & a job. Having lived with
an alcoholic father, who was verbally abusive, Maggie has a lot of baggage. She's not even sure what real love is.
The story will draw you in, from the very beginning, & keep you reading till the end.
A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!!!

Cute but not distinctive enough

There wasn't enough show. Therapy is fine and forgiveness is a long process, I.e. I get it no quick fixes. But the entire book tried to subvert form. No heated arguments from the start just passive aggressive posing and backhanded subversion. It continues with the inciting incident, climax, resolution and denouement being contrary to form. It only works well in the denouement where it is cute. The resolution works but drags a beat too long. But my issue is if you go contrary then it has to be replacing the standard with something more interesting. And it's not. Heated arguments, leading to sex, leading to a declaration of feelings, sparking a reversal of all forward progress and a retreat, a grand gesture, and an engagement is the formula for enemies to lovers. In almost each instance the tried and true would have given better writing results.

This is book 1 of the series.

If you want a summary of what the book is about see above the reviews.

At the start you get to know the whole family and then the father of the family passes away. Then the characters in the book come home and the family business' future is at stake. You really do feel for the family.

The is the start of romance between our hero and heroine. You can tell when they are frustrated and when the hero and heroine are starting to meld together. You really feel like you are reading a TV series and I really enjoyed it.

However, what's confusing is when I read the book blub for book 2 it seems like a lot like this one.

I'd give the series a shot as the basis story for the series looks like something I might enjoy and you might too.

Sweet

This is a detailed story about family, life choices, regret, love and second chances. The story starts on a sad note and that introduces us to a family of brothers who rally around their mom. We then focus on one brother Ben and the high school crush he had on Maggie.

The story is long and full of background information which creates a vivid picture of the community, lodge and family. The emotions are there and help bring the multiple characters to life. While Ben is adjusting to some major changes, so is Maggie which creases extra hurdles for the two of them.

The story provides hints into the next story and brothers whose relationship will be discussed and mended?! A sweet read and good start to the series.

Maggie Lawrence worked her way up in the world surviving childhood and an alcoholic Father that she pretty much took care of. Now Maggie works for the Sumners helping to build their dream mountain ski resort. When the elder Mr. Sumner has a heart attack and dies his boys come home to be with their mother.
Ben Sumner, the oldest of the brothers, has had a crush on Maggie since grade school and now he has to help her help his mother survive. The resort is in trouble and Ben has to help Maggie and his mom save the dream. I love this story. Ben and Maggie dancing around each other loving to hate and hating to love. A great love story. Worth the read.

Born to be My Baby: A Canyon Creek Novel- Book 1 by Lori Ryan and Kay Manis is the first book of the Summer Family. This was a very emotional book as it started with a tragic death. I cried buckets! The first book is Ben Summer and Maggie Lawrence. All six of the Summer's Brothers left the Canyon, but return home for the services and also band together to help solve the financial problems that the lodge is having. Maggie Lawrence is out to prove that she is an asset to the lodge and that she has over come her childhood. Ben and Maggie have such spark together. This is a emotional, sexy, sweet, funny and heartwarming story. Bravo Lori and Kay Manis!

Can't Finish!

I'm close to 60% finished, but I just can't make myself finish. It not that the book is horrible, it's that it moves at a snail's pace, and the writing is so BLAH that I keep having to force myself to go on! Ben gets a hard on but the author provides no chemistry of sexual tension between him and Maggie! It's ridiculous when they finally have sex (it's not love without chemistry). The story itself might have merit in the hands of a more skilled writer. I just don't care enough about the characters or their story to finish this book. I certainly won't be spending money to read about the other 5 Summer brothers, either.

A tragedy brings the Sumner boys home to Canyon Creek.
Ben Sumner, a successful businessman returns after a 10 year hiatus to find his family land in jeopardy. Ben tries to gain control of the situation only to discover that his high school crush, beauty queen Maggie is manager of Sumner Mountain Lodge.
A story of goals, taking chances, trust and learning to work together as the rewards are so much better.

Great start to a new series

Enjoyed every minute spent with Ben and Maggie at the Sumner Lodge in Canyon Creek. Ben is one of six boys and I am sure all their stories will follow. This first one in particular is filled with love, romance, angst and at times can be a real tear jerker. I have fallen in love with the Sumner family and now that I have finished this one, that I highly recommend with 5 Stars, I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

This is the first book of this series, and it was heartwarming and sweet. Ben returns home to help his ailing family land, and he encounters Maggie, who has taken over running the lodge. I enjoyed this romance story about giving as good as you get, taking chances and learning how to trust, especially with matters of the heart.

Two Titles

Loved the story. Characters are sure to make for more fun reading in the additional series. Just got tired of constant internal sexual conversation with themselves. That was over done. It was if that was all they could think about. Be ready for vivid sexual descriptions. The story had some really good points about loving yourself first.
