A fun and outrageous take on the rainbow-bright unicorn food trend, bursting with fantastic goodness.
Unicorn food —brightly hued dishes that make you smile—has taken the world by storm. That means the time is ripe for a book-length celebration of its many benefits. (The rainbows! The glitter! The happiness!) So food writer and stylist Rachel Johnson has gathered 40 of her most over-the-top unicorn creations , Curated for maximal magic and presented in swooning full color in a gift-ready package, it’s an expression of pure sugary joy.
Rachel Johnson is a British editor, journalist, television presenter and author based in London. She lives in Notting Hill, London with her husband. They have three adult children.
Librarian’s note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
This is not a book that I particularly liked, however this would be a great book for a tween. It is just on that age group. For me it would have been nice to have more pictures, especially for the type of book it is.
The recipes are a bit hit-or-miss here. I think the instructions on things like unicorn bread, cake, grilled cheese, etc. can be very useful. On the other hand, there are also recipes for unicorn soup (just make soups in six different flavors/colors) and unicorn vegetable trays (cut up vegetables in rainbow colors and organize them in a rainbow....). Obviously, some of these things are not really that hard or creative and seem to be used as filler in the book; no one would actually need instructions to do this. I recommend skimming the book or getting it from the library to see how many of the recipes you would really use before purchasing. On the other hand, as another reviewer mentioned, the simplicity of many of the recipes would make the book great for tweens or teens (though there are alcoholic drinks in it, which suggests the author did not imagine the audience as minors).
Publishers take note: when I pick up a cookbook, I want pictures of Every. Single. Dish. No exceptions. That was one reason for taking a star away. The other was for the non-stop Instagram references (I'm reading a book, not a web site, I don't want to think about the internet.) However, some of these recipes do sound good, with some much-needed savory recipes and plenty of fruit.
Want Rainbow Bread or a Unicorn Milkshake or a Cake or Popsicles or popcorn...you get the point... Everything featured in the book from desserts to drinks, pasta to salads is literally a unicorn lover's daydream. Every recipe involves rainbow or tie dye or glitter or sprinkles or pinks or candy bits somewhere in the food... Talk about an overload of Unicorns. There is nothing wrong with the book or its recipes or ingredients...my only negative against the book is that most of the recipes are a "make them one time and ONLY for very special occasions" otherwise, they're not worth it and are very time-consuming to make. Each their own, but they are fun and whimsical!
I loved every savory page of this vibrant, creative collection of unicorn confections. The recipes are relatively easy and affordable. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who loves unicorns.
