How to Study the Bible

Rate this book
Which translation is best? Which Study Bible? What are the secrets of resolving difficult or controversial passages?

From forty years of intensive Bible study and teaching, Missler shares his favorite helps, secrets and practical suggestions on how to take the Bible seriously.

Most Christians, although they want to do in-depth Bible study, know little of the types, philosophies and tools of study available. Is the Bible to be taken literally or figuratively? What study aids would be most helpful in beginning my own home study library?

Going through the Bible book by book. "Eat the elephant one bite at a time." These studies produce the most lasting results. There is a balance in the "whole counsel of God." Emmaus Road in Luke 24:27.

Where to Start?

A good "first book" is the Gospel of John: "A child can wade in it and an elephant can bathe in it!" Other good starting points include Genesis, Acts, Matthew, Daniel, and Revelation (Which is the only book which unequivocally promises a blessing to the reader). You are unique: let the Spirit lead you.

A very informative lecture currently available at the Koinonia Institute. In it, Missler gives valuable tips for understanding the events of the Bible in an organized fashion. He explains why the King James is a superior translation, and gives reasons for regarding the Bible as the inspired Word of God. Also very helpful is his list of Bible study "pitfalls," and his introduction of several great Biblical resources available over the internet.

3.5/5 stars, very insightful and well written guide to studying the Bible, just wish it had more depth & revelation BUT still great book.

——During the middle of World War II, two Dutch sisters managed to smuggle a Bible into the Nazi’s Ravensbruck concentration camp. Corrie ten Boom relates that time in her 1971 book The Hiding Place, saying: From morning until lights-out, whenever we were not in ranks for roll call, our Bible was the center of an ever-widening circle of help and hope. Like waifs clustered around a blazing fire, we gathered about it, holding out our hearts to its warmth and light. The blacker the night around us grew, the brighter and truer and more beautiful burned the word of God.

—Proverbs 30:1 (Itheiel = God has arrived / Ucal = to be consumed) referring to Jesus becoming the bread of life

—Jesus emphasized the Scripture. One of the first things He did after the Resurrection was go on a seven-mile Bible study with two of his followers on the road to Emmaus. During those two or so hours, Jesus took them through the books of Moses and the Psalms and the Prophets and showed them all about Himself from the Old Testament. He used the whole counsel of God.

Exactly what I needed

I've been yearning for an entryway into the world of Bible study. Not just reading, which is a joy itself, but studying it like a serious student. This book took a spark and keeps lighting it into a flame. Chuck employs a direct but fairly light style that kept me drawn in and eager to learn more, I keep coming back to it when many Kindle books sit idle. Go for it! You won't regret it!

Chuck doesn't really discuss how to study the Bible much in this, though there are a few tips scattered about. None of that matters though, as he is such a wonderful Bible teacher that it's still interesting and easy to listen to.

Useful ideas

I love his style. Makes me hunger for more. A bit frustrating, as some of what he suggests doesn't quite work the way he said. Maybe the times have changed since he wrote it? Apart from that, plenty of useful information to begin with. Encouraging.

Very informative and helpful little book.

I recommend it for serious Bible students who are interested in studying the Bible for themselves rather than through the lens of Christian popular culture or whatever their pastor says.
