She was ready for anything, but not for this brutal Alien War...

Joanna Angeles is a Former, one of many young people trained after a terrible war to terraform distant alien worlds. She was told she would be securing the future of humanity against coming ever coming so close to extinction again. But her task seems much less grand when she finds herself trapped in a frozen hell. With only an artificial intelligence riding along in her mind for company, Joanna has ten years to prepare a home for thousands of people- and she’s the only hope they have.

Volistad is a Ranger, a warrior and hunter of the ever-dwindling Erinye people. Born with a savage nature and trained to destroy any possible threats to his tribe, Volistad still dares to look beyond and marvel at the arrival of a strange new god on his homeworld. If he wants to unravel the mysteries of this otherworldly newcomer, he must defy the will of his tribe’s elders and face the “god” on her own turf.

When the two worlds collide, Joanna and Volistad find themselves caught up in an old conflict, a war whose roots stretch back to the birth of the planet they are fighting over. To survive, they will both have to come to terms with ancient dark secrets, and come to terms with parts of themselves that they’ve hidden from everyone- but perhaps not from each other?

Can Joanna make a home in this hellish landscape for the people that are depending on her? Can Volistad save his people from certain doom at the hands of their own past? What connection can people so different from each other find in a world gone mad?

Johanna lived life on Earth as an orphan and ward of the state so she was recruited to become a terraformer. They made it seem so important and heroic but the truth was anything but. She was chosen because she was expendable. After a couple of years training, she and her fellow terraformers are about to be launched to their assigned planet. Joanna's job to be launched to her assigned planet with just an AI to keep her company and some needed supplies. She will be stuck trying to transform the planet for ten years until the colonists arrive. When she arrived at her planet, she realizes that she is in big trouble because it is an ice-bound planet with some deadly storms. The bad weather on the planet makes it very hard to survive. Joanna is trying to survive and set up a viable camp.
Volistad is a ranger for his people and his job is to hunt for his people. He sees Joanna's arrival and is very curious about the new arrival. Joanna's advanced technology makes her seem like a god to the simple hunter. He goes back and tells his people about the new god's arrival. His people imprison him fearing he has been corrupted and send one of their storm caller mages after the new god. When the storm caller is defeated by Joanna, Volistad is sent to spy on Joanna and to find out everything he can. Volistad ends up reaching Joanna and the two start to get to know each other. Perhaps they will be able to help each other.
This is a very long story with some twists and turns. I voluntarily received a copy of this story and this is my honest review.

Joanna Angeles has been trained to go to an alien world and prepare it for human colonists due to arrive in 10 years time. However she is not so confident when she awakes to find herself on a frozen world with an artificial intelligence in her head to keep her company and stop her going insane. Volistad is a warrior and hunter known as a ranger and a member of the Erinye. He sees a god arrive on his world and finds that he will have to go against his leadership to find out more about this god. They both get caught up in ancient dark secrets and have to work together to get past everything. Can they save the Erinye and make the kind of environment that the incoming humans AND Erinye can live together in harmony?

This was a great story that added a futuristic touch with the AI in her head and the nanobots helping with everything. The building relationship between Joanna and Volistad was nicely written and I enjoyed the sections about learning the language. Everything was well written and clear/easy to understand. I could feel the thoughts and emotions of the characters and it was easy to empathise with them.

What an amazing book loved it, it kept me on the edge of my seat the story kept me awake until I just had to sleep but thank god I was on holidays and could stay up longer with that Joanna Angela's is sent by the government to another plant to make it livable so that in 10 yrs time more people from earth can come and make a new home to live but unknown to her there is another race already living on this iced planet ,Volistad is a ranger from the race called Erinye and they are what's left of this race after a war of darkness came upon them and all but destroyed there world so her being on there planet is causing problems and must be checked out, better stop don't want tell the whole story. Does Joanna make a place for her people, can the all get along, and will the sparks between Joanna and volistad come to life, read this to find out. I voluntarily reviewed an arc copy of this book for an honest review. Thanks karen N

Not really a romance... more an adventure

While this story has a bit of romance in it I wouldn’t call it a romance, but more a sci-fi adventure.

It is about a woman who is sent to terraform a distant, thought to be uninhabited, planet due to its brutal cold climate. She is accompanied by a AI that is installed in her brain. It keeps her company and helps her problem solve among other things. After a very short time on planet she comes in contact with a local who is sent to investigate her and her motives for being there as in the past “gods” have come to wreak havoc on the inhabitants. One thing leads to another and she and the alien have to save the planet from corruption of natives and imprisoned gods.

The story was a bit slow for me, but not terrible enough to put it down altogether. All in all, It was an interesting premise. There are typos, but not enough to be annoying.

Volistad in yet another great Ashley Hunt alien romance. The story takes the reader on a journey through time and space involving many different subjects. It starts on a post-apocalyptic Earth with Joanna being shot into space alone to colonize a new planet. However, she is not exactly alone as she has been technologically advanced and an AI (artificial intelligence) implanted in her head to help on her mission and to keep her sane. The planet she lands on is actually a moon and is a frozen wasteland. She soon discovers she is not alone. Volistad and his people live inside the moon to protect them from the elements. His people reminded me Vikings in their customs and appearance. The aliens thinking she is a god attack her and thus set into motion an adventure of struggles and discovery of not only herself but of the whole planet and its history. Lots of drama and action throughout the whole story with a HEA ending. Loved this book and can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

Ashley L. Hunt has done it again and hit this one out of the park. Volistad is an amazing piece of work. It has so much action, drama, mystery, suspense, and romance. The descriptions in the book are exceptional and with them you can easily imagine the scenes in the story. The characters are superbly developed and have such great personalities the leap out at you. I love Joanna's character because she is fiercely strong and independent. Volistad is exceptionally protective and caring about what he loves. Once you start reading this you don't want to stop until you reach the end because it use kept getting more and more intriguing as the story continues. This is definitely worth reading and it won't disappoint. I voluntarily review an advanced reader copy of this book.

Not your typical sci-fi romance. It's dry. Despite it's title (alien mates), I would say it reads closer to a drama crossed with a thriller. The world building is intense. The culture of the natives is well written, in a breathtaking kind of way. The Eiryne religion is woven into the plot so well, everything makes sense. When I realized in the beginning the plot mixes sci-fi with paranormal, I was intrigued. To watch it unfold was nothing short of a masterpiece.

As a reader, I should warn other readers who have a weak stomach to avoid this one. It is graphic, and there are creepy bugs. This didn't really bother me, but the warning it's there.

There are plenty of errors in my copy (I got the box set), there are enough errors to drop it down a star.

That one was long. IT made all descriptions deeper and more detailed in the whole perception.
Joanna is sent to a new planet but wait a minute... Who is Barba? What will happen when all she knows is AI in her head? I was really surprised with a way that people were living - true predators.
Volistad - a young alien that just starter his adulthood life. Will he manage to get to understand Joanna that he considered a goddess? But gods seems not that good - what are all secrets of that people?
I enjoyed this book rather much. I hope there will be more books in that genre that would concentrate on characters, background or descriptions. That made their story Unusual!

Great story

I really enjoyed this book. I found Joanna, Volistad, Nissikul, and Barbas very relatable and found myself routing for a happy ending for all. I believe that Ashley L. Hunt has done that. This is a story of lose of: trust, love, and even one's self and then discovery of: the real self, true love in all forms, friendship, and happiness. For anyone seeking a good book full of action, suspense, supernatural/paranormal, aliens, and most of all love then this is a great story to sink your self into. Happy reading!

This book is Volistad,Johanna and Barba's story but the book has to be read to find out who or what Barba is! The book was a little long but that made the book all that much more enjoyable, as it lets you know more about the characters, background and the description is in depth. I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Captivating Book

This book was just as interesting and exciting as the two previous ones. It has enough action, drama, adventure, and steamy romance with awesome characters? It's a story that holds your attention from beginning to end and it will not disappoint in any way? A must buy series and keep them coming.

This is an amazing stand-alone sci fi and fantasy journey. A woman (alone except for an implanted AI) is sent to a far moon to terraform it for future colonists. She lands on a completely frozen world, begins her work and is suddenly contacted by a savage warrior - Volistad. Then the crazy, exciting adventure REALLY begins!
Warning: explicit sex scenes.

Great read

It was a strange read for me. Yet after you get the storyline is going on then the story gets interesting. A little bit of everything from history of how a people could have started besides how a new life could begin.

An absorbing story.

I was drawn in to the story from the first. It has a whole range of emotional content and the author has put it all together in a way that tells a tale of bravery and technology overcoming evil. I would recommend this book to anyone.

In some ways I don't exactly know what to think of this story. It is hauntingly beautifully sad even though it had a HEA ending.

Descriptive Writing but......

I liked how the author used vivid words to describe and picture her thoughts but the story lack interest and appeal with the reader. It felt more like a textbook rather than a story. I felt the characters are missing the emotion and passion. I just had to scroll the pages to finish it.

I reviewed this story when it was originally released as a box set called "Alien Former." I have been slightly revised and is even better now. Here is my original review:

I loved this box set. I am not going to spoil the story for you, but I think you will be surprised from the very first page until the last. I could hardly put the book down to sleep. I am so glad I got the box set so I could read the whole story at once.
The world building is excellent, and that has more than one meaning in this case! I also really liked the characters. From the heroine, Joanna, to Volistad and Nissikul, and even the Deepseeker and Barbas , everyone is developed to the point that you need to understand them.
There is building, destruction, pain, love, betrayal, war, and finally peace I really did not want the story to end.

I received an ARC of this revised version from the author. My review is my own.

The travelers had been selected and the President made his speech about their heroism in going out into space to find a new habitat for the future. The truth was, they were not heroes, they were not volunteers. They were the dregs of society, wards of the State, who had nothing else and would not be missed. Joanna Angeles waited for her turn to be literally “shot” out of The Gun that would send her “bullet” pod into space toward the planet she was to land on. No one knew if the travelers would make it there alive or not -- nor even if they would survive once there. If they survived, they would have 10 years to create a new world for the ship of 10,000 refugees who would follow – or die if the new world wasn’t ready!

Joanna woke in a log cabin to the smell of bacon. She met Barbas, the AI implanted in her, and he explained she was dreaming and he could put them in any environment or situation she wished for. But when her “bullet” landed, all she saw was white! Her planet was ice – actually it was a moon in perpetual eclipse. And they would need to build a shelter as quickly as possible to survive the temperatures. But what she doesn’t know is that she is not alone on the planet! Will she survive? Will she be able to prepare an environment for the refugees coming to live here? And how will she communicate and fit in with those who already live here?

This was a really good, well written book. The focus on world-building is absolutely true. The details provided by the author were amazing. It gave the reader the feeling of actually being there and seeing everything firsthand. One could immerse themselves and enjoy the book among the characters described so thoroughly that they became real! I definitely recommend this one! You’ll love it!
