Everyone knows that you can’t get by in life without multiple social media accounts. They are our portal into the world and our connection with friends and loved ones. From distant childhood acquaintances to our mothers, most of our interactions are moving to social media. And life went swimmingly for a while.
People are starting to become aware of the real costs of social media. These free services that cost the most when it comes to our pursuits of happiness and enlightenment. The effects hit everyone
These are not accidents. Scientists and businessmen work tirelessly to create these experiences, while making them seem organic and real. Our portal into the world is completely contrived and manipulated in every way possible. And we are addicted. Social media is the first thing we check in the morning, even before we get out of bed. It is the last thing we check before we close our eyes. We check it on the toilet. During work meetings. While visiting with friends. During dinner, at the table with our families.
We are looking for something. What are we looking for, and can we ever expect to find it from social media?
“I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works.” ~ Chamath Palihapitiya, Former Vice-President for User Growth, Facebook
We are beginning to have conversations about the impact of social media on our lives. Studies have been conducted for years over the effects of social media on our emotions, attitudes, and actions. A lot of the results have been quite damning. But so what? What can we do about it? Social media isn’t going to change for us. And it’s not like we can stop using it. If there is nothing we can do, then what does it matter?
The goal of this book is to answer the question “what can we do to take back control of our wellbeing”.
Chamath also had this to “We are in a really bad state of affairs right now, in my opinion. [Social media] is eroding the core foundation of how people behave by and between each other. And I don’t have a good solution. My solution is I just don’t use these tools anymore. I haven’t for years.”
Many people are ready to quit social media cold turkey. This book covers a little of that too. But most of us aren’t ready to consider such a drastic change. That is the assumption we will start with. We will look at what you want to get out of social media, and how to overcome everything else. We will set out to remove “Negative Engagement” from our lives, and replace it with thoughtful, meaningful relationships. The goal is to train ourselves to pursue lasting value, meaningful change, and to make the world a better place. Once we focus on healing ourselves, then we can make social media a better place. We have the power. Let’s own it!
