If I could sum up this book in one word, it would be Wow. Tiffany Warren has navigated outside the Christian fiction genre with a very different and entertaining tale of marriage, love and forgiveness. The Outside Child is a slow build with strong, relatable, if not always likeable, lol, characters with a genuine love for each other. All I can say is that The Outside Child was not what I expected but it had some powerful elements and themes that had me gobbling up this read in hours.
Compelling Quote: "Being in love like this meant giving away all power. It meant putting your heart in the palm of another person's hand and hoping they didn't squeeze too tightly."
When Chenille meets Brayden, a professional high profile athlete I totally understood her hesitation in getting involved with him. Brayden knows what the wants and he wants Chenille. Chenille is not so sure because her main focus is to growing her business. She doesn't want to lose her independence or deal with the "anything goes" groupies.
Chenille was very alpha and controlled the relationship. Brayden catered to her. It really bothered me on the number of compromises he had to make within his marriage to keep the peace. Chenille felt like she was giving up a lot and that marrying and having kids would hinder the strides she'd made in her career as a professional make-up artist.
There were expectations of Chenille that she flat out refused to do as the wife of a star player, ie, charity work. At times, Chenille acted as a single person within her marriage. She was always saying what she wasn't going to do but never saying what she would do in regard to supporting Brayden. When it's mentioned about Chenille's lack of participation in fundraisers, I was embarrassed for Brayden given that he's the face of the team. Sometimes, we have to do what we don't want to do in order to support our spouse. Chenille did not think as a partner, as a unit, as one. She was wholly concerned about her career and how marriage and motherhood would interfere with her goals.
When a tragedy happens that could have been prevented instead of blaming herself, she blames her husband. But it was HER actions that caused the tragedy. Brayden was very put upon. When the dust settled Chenille refused to talk to her husband for months. A lesser man would have filed for divorce. When he asked if that what she wanted, she didn't say yes, she chose to keep him in limbo. I'm sure living average might have something to do with that although Brayden would have given her a nice settlement.
I felt for Brayden because Brayden gave up a lot to be with her over the years. Chenille didn't make nearly as many sacrifices. When she wants to leave on tour and leave her sick child at home he questions the timing and the reasons why. She asks him why doesn't he take time off. Remember, he's a professional athlete playing mandatory games every week so it's not conducive to his career to take time off. He is not working a 9 to 5 job. When kids get sick, they are not calling for daddy, they are calling for mama.
Given Braydon's character throughout the book what happened felt contrived to advance the plot. I forgave him and that's big for me. Chenille did surprise me in how she handled the situation and it didn't feel authentic to her character. Braydon, once again makes a major concession in order to keep his wife happy. Loved him! Barely tolerated her. Read It!
Although I typically enjoy her books, this one was not at the top of my list. First the title is somewhat misleading as (spoiler alert) the outside child didn't show up until the last 2 chapters of the book and she caused absolutely no drama as you would expect from the suggestion of the title. Secondly, I did not like Chenille at all so I couldn't connect. I really liked everyone else except her and she is on of the main characters. I even liked Marilyn better and she was a mess. As her friend I liked Kara who was really the only one to step in and be honest with Chenille.
On a positive note, the overall message was that a marriage can sustain even the hardest trials if both partners are willing to try and compromise. And prayer was also central theme in in the novel when trials bore down on the family.
This book presents the reader with a twist un...well, imaginable. There were several lessons that could be learned here. Love. Loss, selflessness, crisis, forgiveness, Faith and humble beginnings.
I have binge read Tiffany Warren's books for the last month. So when I heard about this book, I was highly anticipating being over the moon with this book. I kept waiting for the accelerated heart racing etc...nothing. This one didn't have any bells and whistles for me. I was heartbroken about little Quincy. I felt sorry for Brayden. Chenille worked my nerves seriously. Marilyn made my teeth itch. Surprisingly, I liked Brayden and Chenille's fathers. They were traditional father figures. I loved Chenille's mother. Kara should have been fired. Friends and business are sketchy at best most times. There were some funny moments and definitely sad moments. Overall, this one did not do it for me and that makes me sad.
This book has left me wanting more. Brayden is the man that every woman dreams of. The story is filled with love and is reminds us that marriage is for better or worse.
I enjoyed this book from start to finish. In the beginning I didn’t like Chenille. Further into the book her drive and independence changed my view. I recommend this book to read. It’s also great for a book club selection.
The Outside Child by Tiffany L. Warren is a captivating novel about a marriage that is tested by always being in the public eye and later, a tragic loss that pulls the couple apart instead of bringing them closer.
Chenille Abrams is not looking for love when she meets popular football player Brayden Carpenter. In fact, she has no idea who he is and when she finds out, she is skeptical about his intentions. However, Brayden quickly proves he is looking for more than a one night stand with a groupie and Chenille is willing to give their relationship a chance. Their unexpected romance flourishes despite the demands of their careers and living in separate states and Chenille is shocked when Brayden proposes to her. Although they manage to traverse the normal ups and downs of married life, how will their marriage fare after suffering a devastating loss?
Chenille is a fiercely independent, successful businesswoman who does not trust easily following the end of her previous relationship. She is instantly attracted to Brayden but under the circumstances in which they meet, she is leery he is not looking for anything serious. She is soon convinced he is sincere in wanting a long term relationship but Chenille wants a low-key life out of the limelight.
Brayden absolutely loves his career and unlike his teammates, he does not indulge in casual sex with the numerous groupies vying for his attention. He is drawn to and completely appreciates Chenille's strong personality but he does not always respect her career aspirations. Brayden is also occasionally annoyed by her lack of interest in the public side of his career.
Despite these issues, their courtship and marriage are mostly trouble free and quite happy. But after their son is born with a serious medical condition, Chenille is frustrated and angry when Brayden makes major decisions without any input from her. In the aftermath of tragedy, their once rock-solid marriage begins to crumble under the weight of grief and anger.
The Outside Child is an engrossing novel that is quite moving. The characters are wonderfully developed and likable but some of their reactions and decisions are frustrating. The storyline is engaging and Brayden and Chenille's romance moves at a realistic pace. A gentle undercurrent of faith adds depth and substance to the characters and their relationship. An absolutely marvelous novel that old and fans of Tiffany L. Warren are sure to enjoy.
One business woman, one NFL player, what could go wrong?
I couldn’t wait to jump into the Chenille Abram’s story in the outside Child by Tiffany L Warren. Chenille is an independent business woman known as a fabulous makeup artist. She lands a job for a big celebrity in Jamaica and doesn’t want anything to go wrong. At her hotel there’s a mix up with her room, but a knight in shining armor saves her and her friend, Kara from sleeping in the lobby.
Braden Carpenter is an NFL star with a different mindset than his fellow teammates. His respectful manner takes over when he meets Chenile and Kara, even though first Impressions were not what he expected. Brayden offers his suite to the ladies knowing this gesture might get him closer to Chenille.
Having read Warren’s previous novels, I can say this is one of my favorites. I first thought Chenille’s character was going to be the typical ghetto woman that snagged a football player but I was definitely wrong and I love it. Her character is strong, independent and wise especially when hit with unsuspected circumstances. Brayden on the other hand frustrated me because he seemed selfish. The supporting characters even shocked me in this story.
Warren does a wonderful job sharing realistic characters that are easy to relate to and ones that kept me interested in the storyline. I definitely recommend the outside child to readers of contemporary fiction.

I was made aware of the author because she wrote Christian Fiction. When I heard she was starting to transition to Women's fiction, I was excited and a bit nervous, wondering if was going to be so far off I wouldn't be able to read and support her future works. I am glad to say, this was not the case. Even though it's not Christian Fiction, this book was wonderfully executed and well read. As you're reading, You will experience just about every emotion available, and then some. There were several times I wanted to curse her out and call her every name but a child of God. I would have thrown the book, but I couldn't since I was reading it on my kindle. There will be some characters that you will just hate throughout the story (Jerod for example who I feel is still an a hole) , as some that you can see the growth and change as the story progresses. One of the major themes throughout the book is love and forgiveness. And that ending was one of the best ever. I can't wait to see whats In store next year for the next new release.
Pride is a dangerous pill to take or give, but if you can find forgiveness out of pride you have beat the odds. Ms. Warren took us on an emotional ride, well written and thought provoking. My question when I finished reading; was what would I have done? Waiting on the next book from Ms Warren.
Chinelle and Brayden, what a ride! She, a business woman, he a NFL player, met by chance and later married. She was very selfish and I did not like her until the end. I felt sorry for them at the loss of their child. The outside child made up for everything. A vey good story and a must-read.
I really enjoyed this book! I finished it in less than four days. I listened to it thorugh RB Digitial and the narrator was really good. Honestly, I cried quite a bit while driving and listening. There were some heart wrenching moments. (I won't give away anthing) I had mixed feelings about Chenille; I understand not wanting to lose yourself as a wife but she took it overboard. Brayden was a good husband despite some of his faults. This book was a reminder of how God works in mysterious ways. I would definitely recommend this book. Tiffany Warren's novels always keeps laughing, crying, and at the edge of my seat.
This book showed great character and faith. This book showed that family should be put first when going through, good times, hard times, and most of all trying times. This book was about praying your way through tough situations. Brayden and Chellille showed that marriage isn't perfect but if you work, pray, stand by each other and forgive it can work. I really enjoyed this book. It made me laugh, cry and most of all relate/learn how to be more compassionate. I recommend this book to others to read, great author.
The Outside Child was a good read of a believable circumstance resulting from one foolish mistake. The positive side was Chenelle and Brayden's willingness to take responsibility and put the pieces of their broken lives together. I love a happy ending.
So enjoyed this book that explores the relationship between a makeup artist and an NFL player as they deal with the demands of his celebrity while being a two-income couple and eventually the needs of a sick child. When tragedy strikes, Chenille and Brayden must grieve, heal and find a way to move forward, which gets an unexpected help from what at other times would only be considered a deal breaker.
This was an interesting book from the time I read the blurb/synopsis. I was curious to see how the author was going to work out this dilemma.
This is a story about Chenille Abrams a late twenty-something all-natural Ebony woman who is a makeup artist. To some Atlanta’s rich and famous. She gets a gig in Jamaica at a music festival working on some artist that will be performing. Her best friend and assistant Kara, mess up the booking of the hotel and they are left without a place to stay at the venue.
At the airport Brayden Carpenter, an NFL Dallas Knight’s football player catches sight of her at the airport. He can’t take his eyes off of her. So, when he is standing in line at the hotel and hears their problem with the hotel. He offers to give the ladies his suite all expenses paid, the only thing he asks is for Chenille to have dinner with him. She tells him, yes but she has no clue who he is. dinner was all he was getting from her no matter what. He agreed.
Kara her friend laughs at the look on his face when she said she did know who he is. She says she knows who he is and introduces them. She explains that Chenille is not a sports fan. That she is a makeup artist with her own business to run and there to work doing some of the artists that will be performing at the festival. That they are from Atlanta and that Chenille does a lot of the rich and famous there. They both seemed pleased with each other’s stats.
The one not pleased is Jarrod, Brayden’s teammate, and best friend. You see he was there to get as much booty as he could get and all at once if he could get it and have Brayden in his room would crowd his style. A threesome with him as one of the players was not included. They work it out. Chenille and Brayden have dinner only too.
He does invite her to training camp however so now his pursuit is on and I have to say he remains a gentleman. So, here is my thing I can’t seem to warm up to Chenille in this first half of the story. She’s harsh, argumentative, and doesn’t want this relationship really at all. I can’t understand why she bothered to get married to him at all.
Don’t get me wrong Brayden although he is sweet he is manipulative in getting what he wants. He is used to getting what he wants when he wants it not unlike his mother. But not as pushy or obvious. He is secretive and never includes her in important decisions making waves that make a tsunami look small.
Will it change? You will have to be the judge of that. But I will say Brayden is not what he puts out there. He is a guy who wants what he wants and goes about getting it any way he can. Manipulation of the facts, his wife, or those around him. This time it may cost them all a pretty price. Although, Chenille does her fair share to add to the situation. This is a very interesting and intense story. It will surprise you with it’s ending. I give this: 5++++ stars. Provided by netgalley.com. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com.
This one is packed with love, friendship, redemption, and faith. This is not your regular type of book. From the beginning to the end I couldn’t stop reading!! It was so good. Get ready for a great ride. Tiffany did her thing. 💕
There was so much given in this book that would make great topics for a book club. The union of a husband and wife, selfishness, forgiveness, betrayal and the healing power of God. AWESOME! I could have finished this book in one day, but it was dealing with so many different issues I wanted it to liger on to give me a chance to just take all of this in. (Yea , I know it’s just a book) But it’s reality! Chenille, not many women would have stood in your shoes and walked the walk you walked, till death do you apart. Tiffany, great job.
Brayden and Chenille met by chance at a vacation resort in sunny Jamaica. She’s looking for a room that had never been booked, Brandon the big NFL star who had an already paid for suite. Brandon saves the day by offering her his hotel suite and the games begin. She’s there on business, he’s looking to capture her attention. The story goes through each step in their relationship. Marriage, having a sickly baby who needs immediate medical attention at birth to relationship trauma and drama.
Having been cheated on before, Chenille always expected the worst. She did not want to lose her identity nor depend on Brayden's fame and money for her existence. It was important that she make her own way. Chenille was resistance to Brayden but love prevailed. Chenille's expectations and fears came to fruition. She feared pregnancy but accepted it and embraced motherhood with a sick child. Tragedy struck anyway. While she wanted to blame Brayden only, she accepted her part in it. Brayden's Outside Child was a one night stand. He owned up to it and the one night stand did not interfere in their marriage. This made it easy for Chenille to accept the Outside Child. This is well written and suspenseful. The Outside Child offers lessons in faith and the need to dispense with stereotypes and the tendency to pre-judge or brush individuals with the same brush due to the negative behavior of another.
Chenille Abrams on her way to becoming a very successful makeup artist meets NFL Star Brayden Carpenter and falls head over heels in love. Chenille has no desire to become one of those ballers wives who does not work and just lives off her husband, she is determined to balance her career, being a wife and a mother.
This story really deals with a lot of family issues, even though this book is not identified as Christian Fiction it showed a lot about faith and forgiveness. I cried several time while reading this book. I enjoyed Chenille and Brayden’s story, i would have never guessed that ending.
Excellent read, I enjoyed the characters and storyline. This was a well written book. Brayden and Chenille are a complicated match. They were both selfish in their own way. This couple managed to make it through the storms of their life. I recommend this book.
This is a wonderful, serious story of married life between two strong-willed people. There is much love, but also struggle and strain. Driven apart by a disastrous accident, one partner at some point assumes the task of trying for reconciliation. The tension that can build between two people is well described as is the importance of trying to be sensitive to each other. This couple who truly care for each other, will find harmony in a way they never could have imagined. A great an interesting novel that offers so much to learn! Well written!
