The Vegas strip heats up as Cassie Hack and her companion Vlad are on the trail of a deadly slasher and meet the lovely, yet lethal Vampirella. The team-up event you've been waiting for is a high stakes game of chance when they have to take on The Queen of Hearts!
A solid crossover having Hack / Slash teaming up with Vampirella to fight the Blood Queen of Hearts in Vegas. Plenty of decent jokes and action to make everyone happy. The art had an Eduardo Risso feel to it.
Entertaining action comic that evolve, monster, dmeon and vampire. A bit too light/simple for my taste, the humor didn't really get to me, and I like this kind of story to be darker. So, not bad, give me a good reading time, but I won't continue on with this series.
What’s it about? Cassie Hack and Vlad decided to take a little vacation to Las Vegas. Unfortunately it’s caught Cassie’s attention that some slasher kinda activity is going on there. While investigating she meets a certain superhero involved in the situation... Vampirella!
Pros: The story is pretty interesting and fun. It’s basically the kind of fun story you’d expect. There’s quite a bit of exciting action throughout. This comic is very humorous throughout. I laughed quite a bit at the several humorous moments and funny dialogue throughout. The horror stuff is pretty well done.
Cons: The artwork. Not a fan. Some of it looks okay but a large part of it, especially the faces, kinda iffy. (Seriously, why does Vampi’s face look like she’s about to be holding a paper boat and a bunch of red balloons?) This is pretty predictable. This comic is WAY too censored. The language is censored out to the point that it’s annoying (I mean it’s almost every sentence and they’re just words for fuck’s sake) and while there’s some blood it’s very mild compared to most of either series (they even make a point of having some deaths bloodless). Seriously, both Hack/Slash and Vampirella are extremely R-rated so who are they censoring this for?
Mixed thoughts: The characters and the way they’re written. Cassie and Vlad are very well written, exactly how I’d expect them to be. Vampirella? Pretty much what I’d expect from someone who read the Wikipedia page but not the comics. Oh and the villain is very bland.
Overall: As someone who read the first Hack/Slash omnibus earlier this year and enjoyed it and as someone who is a huge fan of Vampirella, I thought I’d enjoy this more. That’s not to say it’s bad, hell I’d probably read a sequel to this story but it wouldn’t be much of a priority. The action scenes, fun story and frequent humor are good but the constant censorship that honestly makes no fucking sense, predictability and iffy artwork can’t be ignored. If you’re a fan of Hack/Slash and Vampirella, it’s worth a read. If you’re just a fan of one of the two I’d suggest checking out whichever of the two you haven’t read. If you dislike one or both there’s definitely no reason to read this unless you have to read every little bit of whichever one you like. If you aren’t a fan of either you’re most likely just gonna be confused and not care for this comic. For me, it’s a bit of fun but nothing special.
Faço a menor ideia.
I do have to admit some bias here, I have not read any Vampirella before this. I want the AOD crossover still and I have knowledge of Vampirella but it is basic so this story wasn't really up my alley.
It was fun, the enemy worked well, especially against Cassie but overall this was not my cup of tea. Fans of both may like it better and the HACK/SLASH stuff was good and they used her history well.
Seeing Vlad be the one hit on was also a nice change.
I know and like Vampirella, having followed her character from the earliest days. Her various Dynamite reboots have been fine by me. I didn't know Cassie and Vlad from the Hack/Slash series, so I figured this crossover would be a good way to check in on Vampirella and meet Cassie and Vlad. I did not expect the crossover to work so well as a team effort, and I sure didn't expect to enjoy this nearly as much as I actually did.
SORT OF SPOILER. The bottom line is that this ended up as an entertaining three way. Cassie and Vlad, (who hunt deadly slasher/zombies), are partners. (Cassie is the mouth and Vlad is the muscle/protector/big brother.) But in this novel, Cassie and Vampirella end up as pals. And, Vampirella teases Vlad and he develops a crush on her. Throughout the book the partnering switches from Vamp and Cassie, to Vamp and Vlad, to Cassie and Vlad, as each set works to rescue the odd character out. Sometimes this happens during the course of a single fight scene, and ultimately this mix-and-match plays out about a dozen times over the course of the entire arc. I don't think I've read such a fun, fluid, and successful cross-over combo in a long while.
Even the plot is better than most. Basically, nutty Queen of Hearts is all over Las Vegas doing evil end-of-the-world things and Vampirella is hunting her. Cassie and Vlad run across the scene of one of the Queen's crimes, and they and Vamp "meet cute" when Vampirella shows up. Lots of clever banter as they size each other up, but it doesn't go angsty. Vamp takes Cassie and Vlad under her wing, (literally at one point), and the action takes off from there.
The writing is especially clever and a lot of the banter is shrewd and underplayed for humor. Everyone gets good lines, (even the Queen of Hearts), and so this really works as a bloody three-way buddy comedy actioner.
The art is excellent - it clearly and crisply carries the story, sells the action and the humor, is based on assured pencils, inking, and coloring, and always faithfully reflects what's going on. There is a complete bonus collection of variant covers, which offers a very interesting view of just how unique and distinctive the conceptions and styles of different artists can be.
So, this was fun, entertaining, clever, well-paced, and a full serving of Vampirella with a nice side of Hack/Slash. A good find.

At the date of this review there is no trade paperback, so my review will be on the actual 5 individual issues as a whole. I am a huge fan of the Hack/Slash series. I have read some Vampirella comics and have found overall that the stories can be hit or miss. I feel the same way with crossovers; hit or miss.
This series most definitely goes into the Hit category. The story by Shawn Aldridge is exciting and fun. Some highlights include the banter between Cassie and Vampirella and the way that Vampirella flirts with Vlad.
The drawings by Rapha Lobosco are really good with lots of action, interesting perspectives, and nice facial expressions. However, I did not like the coloring by Chris O'Halloran (otherwise this would have been a 5 star rating for me). The color hues do set a somber mood that works well with the story. But, there are almost no different tones or shades in the colors. This makes the characters, objects, and scenery seem very flat.
Good! So obviously nobody has reviewed this yet, but all five issues are out so I'm gonna take a stab at it! I am a long time fan of Hack/Slash so it was cool to read this crossover, I have not read any Vampirella though, but luckily you don't really need to know anything about her going in! In terms of the story, its standard crossover stuff, its not like Wonder Woman/Conan which tries to break away from the norm. But that doesn't make it bad, overall I would say its a pretty enjoyable series and I like the back and forth between Cassie and Vampirella, plus Vlad is in it to! Artwork is always quite nice, it fits both Vampirella and Hack/Slash which I like, plus its better then the artwork right now in the new Hack/Slash series so I was glad to see that! But overall if you like either of these characters I think you will enjoy this one!
I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley
This was just a really fun time! I read a bit of Hack/Slash several years ago but I've never read anything with Vampirella in it. Luckily I think I got along just fine with any background knowledge because it was mostly just a fun 'running around and hitting things' kind of team-up, which I guess is rather simplistic but also a really nice light read when done well. I also really liked the art style and that - despite running around in an outfit for which the word bikini might even be too generous - Vampirella was never really put into any of those ridiculous 'most comic artists obviously have no idea how female anatomy works' kind of poses that I was steeling myself when picking this up. Really enjoyed it and definitely makes me want to get back into Hack/Slash again!
A solid crossover for the ones familiar with the characters
To get in context fast: Vampirella is a long running series about a female vampire from another planet that finds her way to ours, and tries to live without hurting innocent humans while fighting diferent threats. The team o Hack/Slash (a "final girl" named Cassie and a powerhouse named Vlad) are friends who fight "slashers", that are human or supernatural antagonists preying on normal people.
Getting y¿this clear, "Ella" and the team of H/S butt heads in Las Vegas, while "Ella" is tracking a cult killer, while the two friends are on vacation.
This is a by-the-numbers team-up story with losts of actions in a "chase" manner of way in which the pace is really fast, covering five issues of story. I wasn't sold at first, since this kind of endeavours are somewhat treated porrly by publishers, but the story was ok, with good action, some heart warming moments, and a great work in the art department by Rapha Lobosco, whose clean line work and contrasts reminded me of Eduardo Risso (100 Bullets).
I got this from a five issue format comics, and for me the negative note about this comic ( i dont know if this was taken in account in the collected edition) is the fact that in none of the issues editorial takes the time in the first page to give a brief eplanation of the characters. I know that the target reader of this kind of material might know one of both of the main characters of the book, but this standalone volume can be an introduction to any of those properties. this happens to many "dedicated crossovers" i've seeen recently.
This is not a must read comic, just a fun team-up book with good art.
I read some of Vampirella's comics for the first time in preparation for this and was slightly underwhelmed by the horror icon's solo stuff. However, here, she was such a gnarly delight. I think placing her on the same team as Hack/Slash is a brilliant move. Despite the title, this is very much a team-up book which honestly made it work that much smoother. Though, the first issue would leave you to believe something else - the series does have a beautiful progression to it. That's what I really appreciated about this book. It almost feels cinematic the way it moves.
The art of Rapha Lobosco is just astonishing. Simply captivating. Like I feel like there is no other way to put it. The art feels like it has the warmth of a Bruce Timm cartoon. That paired with the story that Shawn Aldridge is telling is nothing short of exceptional. I think my only complaint with this series would be the character design of The Blood Queen, the antagonist, that brings our heroes together. She is basically a rip-off of Wonder Woman from the NEW 52 era. That and the story kind of ends abruptly. There is even a meta-joke about it saying "sometimes big events have small endings".
Hack/Slash vs. Vampirella by Shawn Aldridge is another in a long recent list of Vampirella team ups and I have to begin to wonder why. Are we looking to give exposure to lesser known comic book characters or (and I find this very hard to believe) is Vampirella losing her popularity?
Cassie Hack and her partner Vlad take a long overdue vacation in Sin City and stumble upon a serial killer! This killer is ripping her victims (all male) to shreds and leaving a bloody mess in her wake. They meet the legendary Vampirella and team up to find the killer who is known as the Queen of Hearts. What follows is pretty standard fare for this kind of comic. Plenty of well drawn and imaginative female body parts and an overdose of violence and blood.
I don't have an issue with this at all, let's get real this is what comic books started with. But what I find somewhat annoying is that this is solely what the book has to offer. This is pretty low brow and with the better Vampirella books, she was never low brow.
'Hack/Slash vs. Vampirella: The Heart is a Lonely Killer' by Shawn Aldridge with art by Rapha Lobosco is about two groups of hunters meeting each other in Las Vegas.
Cassie Hack and her friend Vlad role in to town looking for heads to crack. They get a lead on a gruesome murder with a victim who has a missing heart. While they investigate the scene, Vampirella shows up and is mistaken for the killer. The two groups eventually team up to track down a killer collecting hearts.
I am not familiar with Hack/Slash, but I liked my intro to Cassie and Vlad. Vampi was great in this one, and it made for a solid team-up. The art was pretty good too.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Dynamite Entertainment, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Welcome to Vegas! Cassie Hack and her friend, Vlad, are on a relaxing trip when they come upon a series of brutal murders. As their investigation carries on, they will team up with Vampirella against a serious threat: the Blood Queen is behind the killings, and she will not stop until she revives her one true love, the Mad God Chaos.
A thrilling adventure packed with action and accompanied by masterful illustration awaits the reader. Incredible humor and spot-on lines make this a must-have graphic novel, especially if you are a fan of the genre. Strongly recommended .
This was a lot of fun! Both characters are relatively new to me. I've read exactly one book for each, loving the Hack/Slash and not very impressed by the Vampirella. (I've since read another Hack/Slash). Here, though, Vampirella was an enjoyable character. The plot is a bit of fluff with the two teaming up to kill a demon who wants Vamp's heart to bring about the apocalypse. Fun banter between the girls but my favourite is the big Vlad. The art is typical cheesecake and blood and I loved the playing card theme.
Great characters, good art, snappy dialogue, lots of fun.
Seems like I've known about Vampirella since forever... I can remember reading those old black & white magazine sized comics when I was growing up in the '70s. I had never heard of Cassie Hack (or Vlad) before reading Hack/Slash vs. Vampirella. What a great matchup!
Recommended to all fans of tongue-in-cheek horror comics.
***Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a free digital copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.
Brainless fun. I only knew of Vampirella before this - and not very well at that - so I have no idea who the other one is, or why she has to lose her shirt so often, nor why her bloke thing companion can't do anything without his half-gasmask for company. But the action here, as unoriginal as it gets, is pretty good fun. The bat v bat shtick is worn a little heavy, too, but at least it serves as a good indicator of the volume's intelligence. A begrudging four stars.
Hack and Vlad are in Vegas on vacation, but can't seem to leave the monsters alone. They encounter Vampirella over the bloody bed of the Red Queen's latest victim. They team-up to stop her before she brings Chaos literally into the world. Plenty of demon and zombie smashing before the final confrontation brings the Red Queen down.
Thanks Netgalley for the opportunity to read this volume.
Amazing Vampirella, Sally Hack and Vlad crossover. I enjoyed every snarky comment and every illustrated frame. Together they take on the most evil Queen of Hearts in Sin City. Very highly recommended.
I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This synopsis of this book sounds interesting and the artwork on the cover is really cool but I didn’t like this very much.
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in return for my honest review.
This is my first vampirella comic . I love this. Both women are strong, smart and sarcastic. Artworks are beautiful. It is full of action and never a dull moment. I think i want more now.
I thought this was one of the better crossovers of this type. Most crossovers seem overly contrived, and while there was some of that here, there was less than usual. The trio battles the Blood Red Queen of Hearts, and it was cool to see a familiar villain show up. The art fits the story well and while there's the trademark Hack/Slash dark humor, Vampirella was in character enough to make the story work. A fun crossover.
Hack/Slash vs. Vampirella is a action packed team up between two butt kicking heroines. Not familiar with Hack/Slash comics, I looked up the main characters of the comic to learn about Cassie and Vlad and now I cannot wait to read more. A former victim, Cassie now hunts monsters so while in Vegas she comes across Vampirella's old nemesis the Bloody Queen of Hearts. In a humorous and action packed tag team, Cassie and Vampirella hunt the Bloody Queen to keep her from raising the God of Chaos. The only thing they seem to agree on is the awesomeness of Vlad. Sarcasm and sass fly to lighten up the horror story that is dark and funny. The art perfectly expresses the horror feel in the comic and adds to the overall enjoyment of the story. Vampirella rocks as always, even though for some odd reason I hear Elvira's voice in my head when I read her dialogue, and makes for an excellent read. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
This was the first time I've read about Cassie Hack and Vampirella, but it wont be the last! I loved this graphic novel from cover to cover. The story line was intriguing, the characters were dark, yet likable, and the illustrations were simply stunning. I will certainly be reading more in the series in the future!
A huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I truly appreciate it!
