A superb book about compulsions and how to treat them, marred by a sour, resentful scorn for psychoanalysis. This is ironic, because the technique practiced in the book is basically psychoanalytic. Weinberg was annoyed with a certain kind of orthodox Freudian analysis which has largely vanished in the meantime. Apart from that, it’s a fine text about the nature and treatment of compulsive disorders.

George Weinberg was my therapist for nearly three wasted years. He offered feel-good nonsense like all his books He was using me for grist for a book he cannot really write because my healing began after I left his claptrap
