Maggie and Grace's plan to work out their differences at a charming ski resort in Grenoble takes a deadly nose-dive when they become trapped by an avalanche with ten people–one of whom is a cold-blooded murderer. Will the two of them make up in time to uncover who the killer is before he or she systematically makes his way through the guest roster, one murder at a time?
Book 11 in the popular Maggie Newberry mystery series, this book is a clean read with no graphic violence, sex or strong language. Genre: light culinary cozy mystery, women amateur sleuth, cozy animal (dog)
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF : (1) you were seriously angry with your “former” best friend to the point where the two of you were not speaking (2) she suggested a ski trip to Grenoble in an attempt to smooth the troubled waters and rekindle the friendship you have enjoyed for many years (3) there is an avalanche that buries the resort ,trapping you, your friend and ten others under a mountain of snow (4) you discover that one of the other ten is a ruthless killer who is systematically eliminating the guests
Now the question is: will the rescuers sent to dig you out arrive before (1) your oxygen runs out or (2) the murderer does you in. Will Maggie Newberry and her often intrusive and obnoxious friend Grace survive long enough to mend fences?
All is revealed in Susan Kiernan-Lewis’s MURDER IN GRENOBLE, a charming cozy that provides a vicarious trip to France as it takes a look at what things in life are truly important. This is a good addition to your cozy TBR stack if you’re looking for a quick read sans sex and foul language to fill a couple of hours.
This is a good murder mystery. It starts out a little bit slow, but when it picks up speed, it’s great! Maggie & Grace are isolated with a group of strangers — one of whom is an insane killer. Laurent is stuck at home with a totally different problem. Will they all find answers before the killer gets to THEM?
I downgraded this for two reasons. On is that it was written as two parallel stories; I found the switching back and forth annoying. Secondly, there were just too many close escapes, making the story too unbelievable.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I am impressed. It is far from an ordinary murder mystery and I had no idea who the murderer was until very near the end of the book. Set in France, the story focuses on a vineyard owner and his wife along with friends and family. When Maggie and her friend from whom she has become estranged travel to a ski resort in Grenoble, they are hoping to reconnect and get their friendship back on an even keel. They meet an assortment of different characters at the resort and all seems to go well until an avalanche buries the hotel in feet of snow and makes escape impossible. That is when things start to happen. First, the chef is found dead, not from the avalanche but from a knife in his back. Then a detective complains of stomach issues and dies from poisoning. The small group is understandably concerned and several of them are suspected of being the murderer. Then two characters, one of whom is Maggie's friend Grace, disappear. The first woman is found dead while Grace has been attacked and is hurt. Maggie eventually finds both the body and her friend and comes back to the main group to get help. A young newlywed offers to help and it is not until they reach Grace, that Maggie realizes that she is stuck with the murderer. It turned out that the woman had just been released from a mental institution and this information was concealed from her husband so the arranged marriage could proceed. At this point, rescuers including Maggie's husband arrive on the scene and all is well. The book is well-written with plenty of plot turns that keep the reader guessing. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good read that does not take a lot of time.

Murder in Grenoble is the eleventh book in the Maggie Newberry Mysteries series by Susan Kiernan-Lewis. The Maggie Newberry series of books by Susan Kiernan-Lewis turned out to be a great cozy mystery series that kept me engrossed the whole way through. Throughout the series we follow thirty-something, Maggie Newberry, an advertising copywriter who has been unlucky in love. Her ‘normal’ life gets upended when her sister, who has been missing for quite some time, turns up dead. Then to add an extra layer of complication, Maggie must now travel to France to locate her young niece that she didn’t even know existed. Arriving in France, thing take a dangerous turn when her sister’s murderer then sets his sights on Maggie and her niece. Add in a sexy Frenchman to add a little extra layer of intrigue, plenty of dramatic developments, secrets, lies, crime & investigation, and the story takes an engrossing turn. From book #2 onwards- Maggie’s sexy (French) boyfriend, who we met in the first instalment has inherited an ancient vineyard in a small rural village in France- so Maggie quits her job and sets off for a year abroad. But trouble soon follows, when a vicious murder takes place, thrusting them into the middle of an investigation that links to a 50year-old murder. What happens makes for intriguing reading….and so the series unfolds, with each book bringing another cozy mystery for Maggie to investigate. Sprinkled with mystery suspense, tension, drama, danger, romance, marriage, motherhood, travel, and recipes- made this series a memorable read. It is a light-hearted and enjoyable series, the ‘clean’ stories mean there are no sexy times, violence, or profanity.
I really enjoyed this book. It was just what I needed for a light mystery read to wrap up the holiday season. It has a "And Then There Were None" feel to it, as Maggie solved the mystery of who was murdering the people snowed in by an avalanche. It had a long introduction of character development to start off with, a good 1/3 of the way in before the murders began. It took some turns and the killer was not who I suspected earlier on.
Often people will ask if the book can be read alone, as it is part of a series. This is the first book I read in the series, and I did not find it hard to follow along. It did make me wonder what had happened in the earlier books, but I still felt fully connected to this story line and will likely read the earlier ones.
The book is set in contemporary time, but it had a Annees Folles feel to it. In my mind, I kept envisioning the gilded age enjoying the French mountains. However, an iPad or mobile phone would pop up and remind me it was not set 100 years ago.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The story hooked me and I read it in about 2 days. I really like the author's style, and the characters are interesting and well drawn. This particular book had several twists that surprised me.
I had read a couple of her early books and was not that impressed. There were quite a few editing problems and also some glaring mistakes in French. I was very happy to see that it noticeably improved in this later book. I have skipped quite a few books in the series, obviously, but have put them on my TBR pile. One glaring editing misstep in this book was the misuse of a character's name. . That was the only misstep for me in this wonderful book.
Eleventh novel in an ongoing series set in Provence with transplanted Atlantan Maggie solving a mystery a la Agatha Christie. This was my first foray into the collection, having the appeal of her residence on a French vineyard to entice the exploration. Characters are fleshed out well, given presumed prior encounters in prior works. The plot is convoluted, with focus shifting through the cast of characters; the more personal issues weaving in and out to stretch the narrative, albeit dampen any reality.
As I am a gatherer of books, I collect books and ebooks from a variety of sources: Goodreads wins, Bookhub, BookFunnel, emails from authors and publishers, and others. I do lose track of their sources. But, as a reader, I feel I should give an honest, unencumbered review for all I read.
This is the 11th in a series but the only one I have read. It is a perfectly good, stand-alone read with good character development, no holes and an interesting set-up for murder. Two longtime friends who have suffered discord in their friendship decide to vacation together to try to mend the rift between them. Both are older with children still at home and live in France. They decide to stay at a ski resort for a few days, relax, ski and talk things out. The resort was at one time a very popular place, but with time has become mediocre at best, but there is still one great thing about it and that is the dining room with a floor to ceiling window view of the mountains. What starts out as a relaxing vacation turns into a nightmare complete with avalanche, murder and being trapped in a room with below freezing temperatures and a murderer.
This book in the Maggie Newberry Mysteries series moves right along! You can read the plot summary elsewhere. While reading previous books in the series is helpful, it's not necessary. The author gives enough backstory to let you understand why Maggie and her best friend Grace have had a falling out. There are murders of course, and plot twists that keep you guessing to the end. There is a subplot involving Maggie's husband Laurent and Grace's daughter Zouzou that adds nothing to the murder mystery but does allow us to get to know Laurent better. All in all, a pleasant way to spend a few hours.
this murder mystery was very hard to get into,it didn't hold my interest as I had to keep going back to see what I read, I almost have up but, since I haven't found many interesting books lately have started several and not went back. This book was intriquing in the last chapters, I appreciated a good yet confusing ending, would have like to see what happens to Maggie's parents. It's an Ok book but, I say if you can hang into a boring subject read it but don't expect that many surprises. Recommended for clean writing.
This is the 11th in the series so the first few chapters are spent explaining all the backstories of the principals based on what’s happened in the prior ten books. The combination of all the previous plot lines dumped at once made this whole group seem a bit off center. And then the excesses of this adventure were just too unbelievable. I am sure those who have read the prior ten books may feel a personal connection but joining the party so late wasn’t a good investment of my time.
The author has a special ability to build the characters while keeping your interest , a skill most author don’t have. And then to bring all the characters into play. She combines a number of plots which are completely different to make the story flow freely and evenly. One never gets lost in the details. I found it hard to put this story down once I got into it. A great read.
I had a very rough time with the premise of this from the beginning. The avalanched hotel with survivors holed up with a killer is just, well... Agatha Christie is the only one that should be allowed to do that. BUT, the characters and the overall intertwined back stories for the characters moved this along nicely. This is a great summer easy read series with an author in total command of her craft.
Maggie & Grace are off to Grenoble to ski for a few days and to see if their relationship can be resurrected. Laurent will hold down the fort with the kids & Maggie's parents. Her father is ill and her mother is pushing them to move back to Atlanta. While Laurent mulls over what to do, Maggie & Grace find themselves in the middle of a series of murders. I did not see the murderer coming; couldn't put it down!
A plot unlike any I've ever read. A lot of the action is totally unbelievable, it still appealed to me. A mad woman, set to kill everyone at a ski resort, combined with an avalanche, plus action that was a little like the Nancy Drew mentioned in the book. Overall, I still enjoyed the book.
This is the first I have read of this author, but it could be read as a stand alone. I found it a bit slow to start with and the murder mystery was rather OTT, but well handled and keep me interested. There was a second thread to the story, back home. I found it a bit annoying to start with, keeping switching storylines but in the end I enjoyed both very much.
Did not disappoint! This is the second book that I have read in this series. I did not read them sequentially and it made no difference. The story was a little slow at the beginning but once again the murderer was a surprise. The ending was a delight. Such a good story that I put of other tasks so that I could finish this book
Maggie and Grace have been at loggerheads for awhile so decide to meet at a charming ski resort in Grenoble to talk but there is an avalanche and they are trapped in an old building with other people, one of whom has recently been in an asylum and is intent on killing anyone she views as a threat. Where is help when you need it??
Maggie and her friend take a trip intended as a chance to apologize over a large incident. They both almost die in the trip instead until they solve the crime.
But a little confusing in the beginning. There was so much bouncing around to introduce all the characters that it took more than half the book to get into the story.
Light read and totally fun! Although this read was a bit darker than some of the previous Newberry mysteries, I always enjoy the ride. As a traveler and foodie (love to cook and eat everything), I enjoy traveling in my mind and cooking/eating while solving a mystery.
MULTIPLE MURDERS AT ALPINE SKI LODGE. AUTHOR PORTRAYS VILLAIN AS EFFETE DO-NOTHING WHO MORPHS INTO A POWERFUL, VICIOUS KILLER, RECENTLY RELEASED FROM A PSYCHO FARM. READER MANIPULATION. NEEDS GRAMMAR EDITING.

Interesting and entertaining story with twists and turns to capture your interest. I've always loved Maggie and her husband in the other stories in this series I have read. This story is as great as the other ones I've read.
What a lovely family. Great storyline, great characters. I was gripped by this book. I'd recommend this book to anyone with a need to escape real life. A holiday in France is just what the Dr ordered
Nice introduction to all of the players and good mix of storylines. You want to know how they all end. A little surprise in regards to who was the killer.
I am a fan of this particular series and enjoy checking out Maggie and Laurent’s latest adventures. They are a quick read for me but there are enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing until the end.
