Geekhood #2

Fator Nerd: Missão Improvável

Rate this book

I’ve been wanting to read Geekhood 2 since about 5 minutes after I completed book 1. That’s almost a year ago, yet when it arrived I just looked at it for over two weeks before finally picking it up. Simply I was scared. What if it’s not as good?

Thankfully everything I loved about Geekhood CEOTGK is still there. Archie’s IM continues to provide commentary, his friends remain geektastic and the writing is amazeballs. (Yes I will be using those words!) There is great character development for Sarah, who now feels like a person not a just Archie’s fantasy.

Living up to Geekhood CEOTGK is a pretty impossible ask because that book came out of nowhere (if someone hadn’t told me to read it I might never have bought it) and was one of my favourite reads of 2012. Andy Robb hasn’t let me down.

Geekhood Mission Improbable is an excellent sequel and if there is more of Archie to come I will be fighting my way to front of the line to read it.

I really enjoyed this novel. It was far better than the first one, and it had a terrific heart touching ending. It showed me how important friendship is, and I woul definitely recommend this series to anyone who wants to try out a new style of writing.

I absolutely adored the first Geekhood book and this has been sitting at the top of the to-read pile next to my bed for a few weeks. I got to the point where I couldn't wait any longer and just had to dive in! Geekhood: Mission Improbable follows Archie, Beggsy, Ravi and Matt as they take their geeky exploits to a whole new level with a bit of LARP - Live Action Role-play. There's still the issue of Archie's feelings for Sarah but he has a plan to win her over.

When you go into the second book in a series having loved the first book, I suppose there's that nervousness that the book won't live up to its predecessor. I'm very relieved to say that I loved this book as much, if not more, than the first! I ate it up in practically a day and every time I put it down (which I only did because of those annoying necessities such as work and sleep) I would miss reading about Archie and his adventures, and I couldn't wait to get back to it.

When writing down notes in my book journal during my read of Geekhood: Mission Improbable, the most common word in my notes was "hilarious". Because this book made me laugh. So much. I don't think I mentioned it in my review for the first book (because there was so much to fit in that I literally could have written an essay if I hadn't held back!) how much I loved Archie's "Inner Monologue" which he uses to express those thoughts he can't say out loud. What made me giggle away during this book was that his IM spends a lot of the time singing the Mission Impossible theme. Seriously, I was laughing so much at that. Of course it means if you read this book you'll have it stuck in your head for days afterwards, but I think it's a small sacrifice to make...

I loved how Geekhood 2 takes Archie and his friends' geekiness to a whole other level. I just got so wrapped up in how excited they got about the live action role-play and how the build up to the big event really drove the plot. Again, Archie questions himself over his geekiness and whether it's something to be embarrassed about but his excitement totally outweighed that and this book was all about the geek pride!

I really enjoyed seeing the relationship between Archie and Tony and Archie and his dad play out throughout the story, because it seems the roles of the two father figures has flipped a bit and now suddenly it's his dad acting weird. There were some hilariously (there's that word again!) embarrassing moments between Archie and each of them that are moments I imagine all teenage boys dread and would relate to (like when it comes to Tony preparing Archie for the big wide world i.e sex) that were so funny and so brilliantly done. It was also so freaking funny seeing Facebook come into play like with Archie's dad using text speak (my mum does it too and it drives me mad!) and Tony adding him on Facebook. These are the real ways to embarrass your kids these days, people.

What was super awesome and got me really excited were the scenes set in York! I live in York and I think everyone will agree that reading about somewhere where you live is pretty cool. It was taken to a whole new level when Archie bumps into some York locals (apparently, according to Archie, all York girls are attractive so reading this book gave me a confidence boost = winning) and reflects on their accent. I laughed so hard. Seriously. Because I have a Yorkshire accent and if there's one word that people take the micky out of me for saying, it's the word phone (which Archie accurately observes comes out a bit like "phern" when you're talking all Yorkshire.). And then Archie ends up picking up on that exact word and I was kind of jumping up and down and laughing at the same time because it was such a freaking accurate reaction. Kudos to the author for that one!

I loved how Archie's crush on Sarah is carried through to this story. He's still totally smitten so when he meets a pretty girl on the way to his dad's who offers the chance of a fauxmance to make Sarah jealous, Archie jumps on board. I really enjoyed seeing Archie deal with both his fake relationship and his feelings for Sarah. As well as that, Archie's friends are exploring the world of girls as well, and I loved seeing how they all coped with that. It was awesome that some the girls got involved with the LARP geekiness, too.

This book was definitely all about friendship and the friendship between Archie, Ravi, Beggsy and Matt is one we should totally all be jealous of. I want to be friends with all of them because I'd just laugh all day long and you'd know they had your back. There were some great ups and downs for the guys in this story and it was really good seeing them tested and seeing how they reacted.

What was great about having the LARP plotline was that you got some pretty kickass scenes towards the end that you would expect from a fantasy novel, only this time it's people in costumes kicking some orc backside. It still made for a pretty exciting conclusion to the story! I loved how the other storylines were tied up too.

Basically this book is one I will be thrusting into people's hands in the future and urging them to read. Not enough books make me laugh out loud and this one certainly did! And it's just so refreshing to find such true to life characters instead of all these glamourised ones we're supposed to aspire to. There need to be more Archie's in the YA world, please. If you still haven't grabbed this book and you loved the first then go and track it down now! You won't regret it. I promise.

It's more like 2.5 stars, though. And I really wish I could like this book more than I actually am. I considered myself as a geek in some ways, so there are a couple of things here and there that I can relate, especially the IM aka the internal monologue that Archie had. But I am not sure that the ending is something that I like, as I found the end to be kind of rushed.
But overall, it's an okay book.

The book was so great.
It showed about the hobby of MC and the teenager love.
And the path that MC have chose also satisfied me since it reminisced my youth memories.

The sequel to Close Encounters of the Girl Kind, Archie is no more the wiser to girls and their strange ways. After admitting his feelings to Sarah and getting turned down, Archie is feeling particularly awkward and is even avoiding her. His friends have forgiven him but wants him to apologise to Sarah so they can get on with their lives. Especially as on the horizon is a LARP event! I already know about LARP, even though I haven't been to one. As soon as it was mentioned, I knew what we were in for: a huge geek-gasm of magic, costumes and role playing. And did we get it!

This was just as funny, if not more so, than the first book, with Archie's Inner Monologue and his complete lack of understanding of the real world, and their extreme geeky excitement at LARP. Then there was Archie's relationship with his dad and his new family. That was a whole other level of awkward, as Archie's dad tries to treat both his and his wife's kids equally but just acts like a moron. The parallels between him and Tony from the first book are evident even to Archie, which makes him feel awful for putting his father's new family in that situation. But also surprisingly adult as he helps his father get past that. Having failed spectacularly with Sarah, I was proud that Archie could make another kid's life a bit better.

I loved how many different aspects of this book interweaved, like Archie's relationship with Sarah and his friends, his mum and Tony, and his dad, everything coming together to help make Archie grow up and understand his friends and family better. Nothing was perfect, all the characters were flawed and ridiculous and the situations they got themselves into were hilarious! This book was light hearted and funny but also showed the reality of teenage relationships and the dangers of navigating them; Archie's world of geekiness is one that I will always love and always make me laugh.

I really enjoyed the first book and was looking forward to reading the second one. Archie is a great character and I wanted to disappear into his world of geekiness again, to see what he would come up with next, what strange event would he have to face.

He is feeling awkward after confessing his love for Sarah and being turned down, how do you face a girl after completely humiliating yourself? His friends have forgiven him for everything and they are back in their world of role play and magic once more, but things have just stepped up- Big Marv has invited the group to go 'LARPing' (Live Action Role Playing) Basically Geek heaven. You dress up as your 'character' and go to a big field and act out an invasion/game with all the other people playing along too, it's the Game - for real! BUt Archie has other things to worry about, his crazy new step-family (both of them- his Dad's fiance and 3 kids, and his mums boyfriend) could life get any more complicated.

Archie really comes to life for me in this book, the more you get to know him the more you have to like him. I realised he's got a great sense of humour and he reminds me so much of people I know. He is really well written, his traits and characteristics are so realistic.

In fact all of the Geeks grow up a bit in this book and it was nice to see them change and develop. I really liked the integration of Sarah and her friend into the group and how they react to it all.

The whole LARPing scenario is really well written too and I actually think it sounds pretty cool, sounds like fun. Something I would definitely consider trying one day. Yes that's right I am proudly announcing my own inner Geekiness!!!

A great follow up to the first book but still fresh and fun. I hope there are more in this series one day.

I read the original Geekhood not too long ago, and I was happy to discover that there was a sequel. The first book was great, light-hearted fun with a little Jacqueline Wilson style family drama thrown in for good measure.

Mission Improbable is more of the same. Young geek Archie must deal with visiting his step-family, a tricky situation with a fake girlfriend and his continuing crush on goth girl Sarah. Everything culminates in an epic live action roleplay. The scenes with Archie's dad and his new wife did seem a little disconnected from the rest of the book, but it was still perfectly believable as another facet of his life.

One thing I must praise this book for is its positive lessons for teen boys, with Archie's Inner Monologue (IM) telling him to grow up when he complains about being "friendzoned" and how he gradually learns respect for the girls, his friends, his family and even himself.

I would recommend Geekhood: Mission Improbable to teenagers looking for a humorous read or to geeks of any age.

Archie gets deeper into Geekhood with LARP! the actual larp doesn't turn up till fairly late, and Archie has to deal with many tribulations: dealing with his dad and his new family (the werewolf bit is piss funny), dealing with Tony the Tosser (who is thankfully less of a tosser this volume, and almost vulnerable in coping with his ready made teenager), and meeting a girl he can talk to on a train. Laugh out loud funny in parts, and very memorable. Hope the series continues.

Archie is one of my favourite male characters in YA fiction. He (and his inner monologue IM) is so funny, observant, realistic and geeky! It's really great seeing the dynamics of friendship through a male point of view, it gives insight into Archie's thoughts and feelings and allows the reader to feel closer to him. Seeing him stumble through experiences with girls and dealing with his new step-parents is so entertaining. I need more Geekhood books now please!

This book is extremely geeky, and something I would definitely read again. Archie is someone who I can relate to, even though his problems are worse than mine! As a strong sequel, it takes a step up from playing in a room to LARPing, just like Archie's situations have been amplified from the last book.

It is a great story, and i love this sequel but I hate the end, 2 books about how in love this nerd boy is to this girl for the end, he give up of her because his friend who didn’t care about his feelings about her and tried to date her get upset, he give up of his love for a terrible friend. And truly pissed me off

I'm a 14 year old girl and I absolutely adored this book. I used to be (and still am in some ways!) a 'geek'. I'm Potterhead and Tolkien super fan and am shy and somewhat socially awkward like Archie, so Archie was relatable to me. This novel was absolutely hilarious, never with a dull moment!

This book was so funny!
I understood almost every geeky reference held between the pages... which is a bit scary, but the jokes are brilliant!
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good laugh, be they a geek or not.

Andy Robb's second book into Geekhood and just as well written. If you've read the first book, then this is a must; though you may be surprised by the ending!
