Kimberley was the diamond capital of the world - and for several desperate months in 1899 the British were completely surrounded there by their enemies the Boers. Amongst the besieged were Emma - stifled by a loveless marriage to war hero Geoffrey - and Bart, the maverick whose magnificent horse Marcus embodied his hopes for escape - until he met Emma. Kimberley is a powerful panoramic novel of a passion played out in a time of war - a gripping and dramatic tale of intrigue, suspense and conflicting loyalties.
I hesitated reading this book due to its low rating and another Amazon review that described the book's characters as "flat". I found opposite quite true. Although the swashbuckling storyline seemed sa bit archaic (although maybe true to the time period) I found the characters quite deep, the most interesting of all probably the enigmas Major Masefield (not in any way a dashing hero but rather rotund and ever plotting) The star crossed lovers Emma and Bart are no less interesting and the ending of the book was a total surprise for me and definitely earned the book an extra star.
