Gabrielle LeRoux was just like any other girl, focused on her academics and other normal teenage angst. That is, until her 18th birthday, where she inherits her powers and finds out she's a witch! She discovers that she is part of a long line of witches that descended from West Africa. They have the power to control the elements at will, breathe life into anything they wish, as well as take it away. The source of their magic comes from the melanin only their kind possess in their skin. Absorbed from the sun and radiating through their bodies. Not knowing how to control her powers, and still having hopes to one day be a doctor, her mother sends her off to an all girl school. There, she can learn how to not only control her powers, but grow them. They have traditional studies along with various forms of witchcraft. The school is on protected land in the middle of nowhere. There, they are free to practice as they please, until one day, a threat against not only witches, but all black people, sends them into uncharted territory. They must ban together to defeat the enemy before there is no one left. With the gifts given from the earth, and the determination to succeed, the Witches from Louisiana will not go down without a fight...

A good short story. I was going to let my grandchildren listen to it, until I heard the sex scene!! They are 11, 12 and 15, I'll wait until they are in their 30's to tell them about this book!!! LOL
I really enjoyed this book but I wanted more. I wanted more backstory on the family, as well as some of the supporting characters. I would have loved to see this turned into a series. I definitely wanted more. I would definitely recommend!
I was pulled in from the beginning with Gabby and her experience of becoming a witch! The information about the evil coven in this book is so alarming and it rings true with all that is happening now to Melanated people and it explains what people with melanated skin is facing and fighting against and It also emphasis that all People of Color must do by embracing their magic and learn how to use it to protect themselves and all melanated people all over the world!! It also offer an explanation as to why there is so much racial hatred toward Black people in this country as well as other places in the world. This is especially true when it come to their hatred for powerful Melanated Women who they really fear! This was a book that held my attention from the beginning to the end ! It was over much too soon but it’s really not over which is the most alarming thing of all!
The negative: this book is TERRIBLE. It’s cheesy, predictable, juvenile and (IMHO) doesn’t AT ALL show the glory of Black Girl (witch) Magic. Calling other women “bitches”, drinking Crown, smoking weed. Ridiculous! The Audible version is horrific, from the terrible “Louisiana” accent to the mispronunciation of “coven” and “amulet” on multiple occasions. The story line could have been good, but it just never got there. No ma’am, it’s not good.
Overall I really enjoyed it. It could have used another run through the proofreading process, and it also could have stood to be a little longer. I wanted to read more about Gabby's school days and her Louisiana home. But the story was excellent, and the ending was beautiful and cathartic.
This could explain some of the evil that is going on, makes sense and metaphor on point. Makes you start making preparations for the fight. Finding the end of the story is a true unknown.
Loved this booked held my attention from beginning to end. Yes i would definitely recommend this book. Truly enjoyed. I wonder if there will be a part 2.
Hello Gemmies! I have a new audiobook review to share with you today. Witches of Louisiana by Natasha Jarrett is a fun fast read. This original story about witches descended from West Africa is unique and creative. I enjoyed it immensely. There is literal Black Girl magic and excellence, action, history, and steamy scenes.
I wish the story was longer and a bit more fleshed out. But there is a great foundation there. I hope the author continues to write more stories set in this world. I liked the premise and the idea of racism and violence against African Americans by an evil magical race as a plot point. It also moves this into the speculative fiction territory. This is an adult book and there are a few erotic scenes. They weren't needed to move the story forward. It didn't bother me just trigger warning for those who prefer their fiction sans graphic sex scenes.
Witches of Louisiana is narrated by one person Jennifer E. Cullins. Jennifer does a good job narrating. Her voice is expressive and her pacing is great, but man her Louisiana accent was painful! It almost detracted from the story.
If you are a fan of elemental magic, beautiful Black Women, ancestors, and sister circles, go read this book. Published by NJN Publishing, Witches of Louisiana is available for purchase from all major booksellers. I give Witches of Louisiana 3 out of 5 gems. I'm looking forward to reading more stories set in this universe. Happy Reading!
Can’t even finish the book. Listening on Audible but that’s not what makes the story bad. This story seemed to have so much potential for a good storyline but the story isn’t well told. The author does well describing characters, but the transitions and build up needs work. The story goes from the main character locking eyes with the love interest in the book to them hugging and kissing the next time they see each other. Then they text each other once and the next time they are together they are having sex. Where is the plot? The story lacks detail when it comes to building the spells. I would prefer more dialogue than mostly narrations but that’s just my preference. I wasted my audible credit

I liked the story behind the witches and how they are able to use them. My FAVORITE accent in the whole world is Cajun. The narrator was good but her Cajun accent was not. There was a sex scene that was definitely erotica. I read erotica by spells (no pun intended) and I didn't like the surprise.
