I saw that this manga would be getting an anime in 2015 and upon checking the manga I liked the illustrations and the blurb, so I decided to check it out.

And what a disappointment this was. I was expected some kind of Otaku sister who hides her true self from people at school/outside, but instead I got an Otaku sister who is a total bitch and a total lazy ass. She wasn't even funny, the only thing she achieved for me was being an annoying brat who (ab)used her older brother. Who she knew would do anything and everything for her. Even buying stuff even though she clearly doesn't deserve it.
I hated how she wasn't honest with her friend. How she acted like a prissy and beautiful princess. I think your friend would get it that you like that stuff, that you need a break from reality, otherwise she wouldn't be a friend. But noooo, let's not tell her and dump all the otaku stuff away and blame your brother.
And yes, that she did. A lot. Every time something went wrong and she hurt herself she blamed her brother, causes people to have a really wrong image of him. I hated that she did that, and I can't see why she would do that. Her brother is trying his best to take care of her and gets shit back from her.
All in all, she is now on my list of worst characters.

The only thing that I liked were the references to various anime or Japan-related thing. Other than that, nope.

And I really wish her brother would grow some balls and say no to her for once. Just dump her and let her stew in her own problems.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend this one, and I won't be watching the anime.

2 star for the cuteness.

When I watched the anime, I fell in love with Umaru. Reading it became a different experience.

She just became so annoying and unhelpful towards his brother. ☠

The brother spoiled her a bit much.

This was not for me!

I found no redeeming qualities in the main character. She is a high school girl who is just worried about her image at school while at home she does nothing. She also depends completely on her brother, who works at an office all day and just worries about making her happy. He enables her too since he doesn't seem to be able to tell her no and mean it.

The plot arc comes in very late in the manga, mostly it's snippets of their life at school, work, and at home, how Umaru basically does nothing and ends up being perfect at everything while her brother works super hard . Near the end, when I began to wonder when it would end, there's an antagonist introduced but I will not be finding out what she'll be involved in since that's in Volume 2.

I don't think I'd recommend this manga. :(

This is a one-note TV sitcom in book form. The sister seems a picture perfect example of poise and grace when she's out in public, but when she gets back to the small apartment she shares with her brother, she becomes a spoiled brat and slob who likes nerdy stuff. That same theme is played out over and over and over in the short stories collected in this book, and it isn't funny once. It was tedious pushing through to the end of the volume.

Holy shit, why does this have such a high rating on Goodreads?! Why do people like this so much?! It's literally Umaru being a spoiled little shit and being a dick to her brother! SPOILER FUCKING ALERT, THAT'S THE WHOLE FUCKING VOLUME!

Damn, I thought the art style was cute so I wanted to give it a try, but it is NOT worth wading through Umaru's obnoxious whining and self-centeredness. If you want to give it a try, I can't stop you, but I'd never recommend this to someone.

Cute little slice of life manga.

World: The art is pretty fantastic for the genre, the attention to detail for the backgrounds and the characters is up there. The world building is okay, it serves the purpose of setting the stage for the slice of life, there are bits and pieces that are character based but it's basic.

Story: She's a himouto as the book suggests and it's the hijinx she gets into. It's fun, it's cute, it's basic and played for laughs. However if you read enough the real emotions shine through about a sister that is rather later but in her own way loves her brother and she is fairly good to her friends. It's funny and basic.

Characters: Umaru is very lazy and that's the entire premise of the book and the play for laughs is very transparent. There is some depth there and it's fun and I don't mind it. Taihei is also very basic with him being the straight shooter in the book, but it's the small moments of sibling love that make shit a nice little book. The other characters are also nice, with Ebina being wonderful as a foil for Umaru, Ebina is there to show the good side of Umaru which has it's merits.

A solid little slice of life book that plays for some light fun laughs.

Onward to the next book!

I was going to give it 2 stars but due to a cliffhanger and an actual conflict appearing at the end of the volume I decided to give it 3 stars. It was pretty boring due to lack of relatableness. The main character is a perfect, flawless girl at school who turns out to be a lazy spoiled brat who psychologically abuses her brother who works tireless to support her. I might read the next volume just to see what happens.

A fairly enjoyable one-note-joke manga. However, unlike similar titles in this genre, I really didn't finish it wanting more. It's not bad, just not worth much more than a chuckle or two.

This was weird. Not just because it's a manga but because it's so so so much like my little sister (it was even more the same before she had a job)

I read this because I enjoyed the anime and I found this kind of bland. I understand why people don't like Umaru, but I think she's better in the anime and the whole purpose for her being annoying is that she'll have some growth as a character (Taihei too!). Himouto! Umaru-chan is still one of my favorite anime despite me not really enjoying Vol. 1 of the manga

I really enjoyed this book. I love the characters and how Umaru has her outside face. She is so funny. i do, however, wish it was a bit longer. I loved it and definitely want to read the next one. Other than wanting it to be longer, I most certainly think it was great and would recommend it.

I expected this story to be really funny but instead it was just extremely annoying. Good idea but the younger sister just acts like a huge brat that doesn’t deserve anything. Her brother does everything for her which a brother should but what gets me is that fact that she also throws him under the bus every time too & ends up just manipulating him to do her bidding. She’s just a very rude brat that needs to grow up & respect others too. I’m so fed up with her. Wish this was better.

I completely adore Umaru. I actually saw the anime first years back and fell in love with it to the point I have watched it multiple times. So this is like reliving that but extra. :D Can't wait to dive deeper into the adorable crazy that is Umaru in the following volumes.

Quite funny. At times the himouto went a little overboard and caused a lot of problems for the older brother. Definitely would hate her as a little sister but hey, it’s a comedy comic.

3.5, it’s fun but it didn’t wow me. Everything is familiar because I watched the anime first, I’m not sure I’d be interested in it at all if I hadn’t gotten attached to the characters there.

I've had this book on my radar for a while for no other reason than the fact that I thought the cover was interesting. But recently I worked a table in an anime library at a local anime convention, and so all that meant was I had four hours to read as much manga as I wanted, and this was one of the available ones. Interestingly enough, all four books I read that day were slice of life manga. I thought the book was pretty funny, and I enjoyed the book, and as someone who is a middle child, I felt like I could relate to both Umaru and Taihei in some sense. Overall, the book was fun, the drawings were very vivid, and the stories were silly enough to keep my interest.

I find it pretty funny how angry a lot of the reviews I see are because they're so angry with Umaru's character. Like yeah, that's the point? She's this total two-faced brat who takes advantage of her brother and essentially harasses him 24/7, but the book doesn't really try and make her seem like a good guy. I feel like Umaru's character is less of a human and more of a imp- sort of in her own plane of existence and her entire existence is to be a nuisance the Taihei. But to me that's the charm! She's so ridiculous and crazy, and yes, if I knew a person like her in real life I would probably hate them, but in the context of the book she can't be taken seriously enough to be hated. Plus, she has enough upsides to her character to make her interesting. She's witty, she's wild, and she's so dramatic. If she wasn't like she is then the manga would be soulless and empty, and therefore unreadable. Although I think her hamsters deserve better, I don't really trust her to actually be a good pet owner.

And when I say I relate to Umaru, I don't mean it in the sense that I think I'm like her, but I get it in more of a "I like annoying my siblings" kind of way. Plus she and I are both pretty nerdy and enjoying wasting money on memorabilia. But at least when I waste money I waste my own. And I can relate to Taihei mostly because I'm really more like him, but I too constantly feel exasperated by sibling shenanigans, which is only intensified by being a middle child. We get the worst of both worlds.

I think the only character (I mean, there isn't really that many characters) I wasn't that into was Ebina, but it isn't really because of her character. Yeah, she's this kind of annoying caricature, but so is Umaru. It has more to do with the fact that she exists solely to be a sort of love interest to Taihei (dude you're way to old for her) and partly because she was drawn with a size H chest. Come on, her character is a high schooler! And apparently Taihei is 26? So what are you doing getting a crush on a teenager ten years younger than you? Ew. I get that this sort of sexualization of teenage girls is more normalized in mangas and stuff, but it still doesn't make it right. Honestly, this is a big reason why I don't watch anime.

I don't have much to say about the plot itself- it's just little vignettes, but they were pretty fun and quite different. Overall, I enjoyed the story, but I am unsure if I'll pick up any more of the books. I don't have anything against the story, there's just more manga that I want to read more, and the only reason I even got around to reading this book was chance. I think I got enough of a fill from the one book, and I don't see how any of the future volumes have a whole lot more to add. I'll never say never, and I could very well read more. I did like this book after all, and I thought the whole thing was enjoyable and I liked the art, but I doubt I'd ever watch the anime. I feel like if I heard a voice attached to Umaru the whole thing might become too insufferable for me and I'll turn into one of the angry reviewers on here.

In terms of humorous slice-of-life outings, this is a pretty decent one. Like most of my experience with work similar to this, it’s been the case that if you aren’t a fan of the core premise from the get-go, then you would not enjoy anything the manga does past its first chapter. This one is no different; each chapter just expands upon the constant back and forth between slacker, otaku Umaru and her hard-working older brother. There isn’t any subversion or exploration of that core concept further along, and the book isn’t necessarily interested in doing that. Sure, Umaru could get some sort of arc where she fundamentally changes her behavior, but something like that would just ruin the manga’s conceit and thus wouldn’t happen till the end of the series (if at all). All that being said, I enjoyed this for what it was. Umaru is a total asshole to her brother, and it was pretty entertaining seeing the siblings try to one-up each other in each chapter. And when I say Umaru is an asshole, I mean it. Her only motivation is to eat junk food, play games, and buy whatever she wants, and she’ll go to any length to do so. I enjoyed how much of a dick she is, but if a main character acting like that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea I’d stray clear of this manga.

I originally purchased this manga for my daughter, it does say "teen" on the back, but I glanced through and didn't see anything too bad. I saw that my kid only read maybe a 1/3 of the manga and left it on the book-self. I asked her if she wanted me to buy volume 2 and she said no.

I didn't want to waste the money so I started the manga myself. I had no idea what the manga was about. I thought it had a little cute girl on the cover, but shesh, Umaru is a self-center brat. Sure the plot is about her being a brat, but truly is that what I am to read? She's so lazy, spoiled and entitled. Her older brother takes care of her after pulling a hard day at work and you know Japan works longer hours than us Americans.

I couldn't see anything adorable, cute or funny about this mana. The only thing I enjoyed was that it was a short read and the book is easy to hold and turn the pages. Wow, I know.

I think the high ratings on Goodreads is probably because the "bratty" storyline is some people's jam, but it is not for me whatsoever.

This book was very cute and so full of nonsense.
Umaru is such a brat! The contrast between her academic life and her himouto ways is very funny and puts her in some hilarious situations.
Her brother uses her friend Ebina to force her into her outside mode, there is one hilarious chapter where she wants the new "Last Fantasy" game. While out shopping for groceries they run into Ebina and he thinks perfect now she can't beg me for this game. You have to read to find out what she does haha.

One chapter where she grapples with buying a hat online, they are all pretty funny.
She pretty much just pouts and cries throwing tantrums to manipulate her brother into getting what sue wants. So keep in mind that pretty much most of the humor revolves around her being lazy and selfish with a sprinkling of her perfect school persona where she excels at everything.

I find the book to be very funny but it won't be everyone's cup of tea.

Oh wow, what an adorable art style and funny premise to a manga! I feel like a lot of people can relate to Umaru. I know I for sure become my true unfiltered self when I am at home, so I can relate to her on that front. Buuuuut…
Yes, the extreme opposites idea is funny, and that premise is her whole personality, but I found her to be too needy and annoying. I started to really pity her poor older brother if I'm being honest. I know it is meant to be a light-hearted funny manga, but sadly, the way she nagged her brother nonstop and would emotionally manipulate him is not cool with me. She ended up sadly frustrating me so much that I could not enjoy the cuter moments. This is such a shame because I really wanted to like the manga since I remember watching an episode of the anime years ago, and remember it being sweeter than what it is.

Umaru is the ultimate covert couch potato. Everyone in the world thinks she's the absolutely perfect girl. Perfect grades, perfect looks, perfect friend, perfect home life (?). Her brother knows that she is actually a lazy bum who whines at home to get her way and wastes all her time watching anime and playing video games and spending all his money.

It's amusing in short bursts, but collected into one volume, it's too much in one go. I found myself tiring of the premise very quickly, though the fun came back when the formula was mixed up by her going outside and needing to wear her perfect persona around he friends.

One volume was enough for me though. I might check out later volumes in the future if I feel like it, but this felt really repetitive far too quickly.
