Mahatma Gandhi was the celebrated leader of the Indian independence movement, and an inspiration for many similar movements around the world. Although they only provide an introduction to their subjects, I really get a kick out of these Pocket Bios, and I was delighted to see Mahatma Gandhi featured in this one. Readers will learn about his formative years, his concern about the injustices he noticed in his country, and his attempts to bring about change through satyagraha as well as how influential he was on others. The back matter includes a timeline, a map highlighting six places that mattered to him. The are also four influential individuals and four "Did You Know?" questions to ponder. Surely, these tidbits will prompt youngsters to want to learn more about this important man.

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
In this small formate book, the reader follows the highlights of Gandhi’s life organized by topic or event. His story is divided up into the following topics: childhood, studying in London, two colonies, South Africa, exploring India, politics, the Amritsar Massacre, the Salt March, Quit India, and the final struggle. The illustrations are cartoonish, with figures with large heads.
I really enjoy reading these books with my kids. They are long enough to have specific details, but fast enough to easily read in one sitting. From this book, we all latched on to the idea of satyagraha, or peaceful fighting, and talked at length about what that might look like.
