Baby Teeth: The First Ten Chapters

Rate this book

Meet Hanna.

She’s the sweet-but-silent angel in the adoring eyes of her Daddy. He’s the only person who understands her, and all Hanna wants is to live happily ever after with him. But Mommy stands in her way, and she’ll try any trick she can think of to get rid of her. Ideally for good.

Meet Suzette.

She loves her daughter, really, but after years of expulsions and strained home schooling, her precarious health and sanity are weakening day by day. As Hanna’s tricks become increasingly sophisticated, and Suzette's husband remains blind to the failing family dynamics, Suzette starts to fear that there’s something seriously wrong, and that maybe home isn’t the best place for their baby girl after all.

BABY TEETH is a story about a perfect-looking family, and a mute little girl who wants nothing more than to kill her mother.

Most of the negative reviews of this book nail the problems with this book perfectly. Yes, the girl’s voice doesn’t seem right for 7, yes OH MY GOD, why didn’t this woman simply set up some cameras in her house? Yes, dad was a dingleberry, yes, I skimmed a few parts because I was getting bored. Yes, she was booted out of schools unrealistically fast (especially the last one).
But, for me, I landed on three stars because the story had good writing, the author definitely shows promise as a writer. Though the seven year old voice was off, I could take it because it wasn’t bad writing, just not perfect.
I liked where she went with the mom, her arc surprised me by not shying away from Suzette’s negative side. I also did think the end was nicely chilling. I liked the aspect of crohns disease, actually added to the story for me.

My three star rating tends to mean, I enjoyed myself despite some problems and will probably enjoy the inevitable movie.

I couldn't wait to review Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage because this book BLEW MY MIND! NSFW warning and the book can be triggering for some, so if you haven't read the book yet, just be aware of that. Oh, and major spoilers. Link to my BookTube video down below:

#BadSeed 2018

I loved the original concept of the bad seed which I read as a teen.. this thoroughly modern take kept me guessing ! You never really know how other people interpret your actions.

This was a teaser and I saw why so many people read it. This is definitely a thriller and I did see why the child disliked her mother, but why did she hate her?

Perhaps it’ll be explained later but for now I’m curious!

Downloaded the first 10 chapters. While reading it, I became so engrossed that I forgot I only had the first 10 chapters and wanted to scream when I turned that last page! I wish I didn't have to wait for July to read the rest of the book!! Read this now! Read this now! Read this now!

This book was intriguing and terrifying in a way that you don't expect when reading about a child.

Hannah is twisted and brilliant. Suzette is trying to be the wonderful parent that she never had, while battling an autoimmune disease. The sheer evilness of this child trying to push Suzette to the edge, while sweetly manipulating her father, is pure evil.

In my mind I was imagining different endings and just couldn't come up with the right solution. Never saw it coming.

Thank you St. Martin's Press and the author Zoje Stage for this #ERC

Shame on me for finishing this. At the halfway point, I was still waiting for some explanations to explain thisdemon - child’s actions. Was there some neurological issue that we weren’t privy to? Was there some heretofore unexplained abuse? And yet because I’m so reluctant to not finish
A book that I’m 3/4 invested in, I persevered. . To no avail.

Give this one a wide pass ..

I am having a hard time trying to figure out what to say about this book! It was very thought provoking throughout, but I wanted more from the ending, or even more of an ending. It had so many loose ends that I need to know more. If you don’t like open ended books this isn’t for you. If you can handle having to daydream up what happens to the characters, give it a go, it’s interesting.

I would NEVER have seen the things coming that did. This opened a door for me about a whole new subset. I like this better the best...not only because of the shock value, but because of how the characters are so well depicted.

Left me up in the air not in a good way..... feels like the author has lots of suspense with no finish.

Wish there was a sequel scheduled to come out. More from this author but ending is open for interpretation.

I read this book perhaps 5 years ago and yet I think about it often. When people want a twisted book to read, I always am quick to recommend this one. Simply haunting.

Creepy

I can't wait to finish the rest of this book. Hannah is so smart but scary at the same time. She's too mature for her age. I can't wait to find out what happens next!!!

Not worth a read. Grossness pushed onto readers to try its best to be controversial.

Fast paced, I wanted more grit. Amazing switch between mother and daughter POV. The ending left something to be desired.
