Cast Nancy Barrett, Christopher Pennock, Stephanie Ellyne, James Storm
"Trio" by Nick Myles features Carolyn Stoddard and Amy Jennings in a story where they meet a mysterious pianist named Jude who makes them both feel they are in love with them, and he with them - but both women feel they are the only one. It was interesting only in the format - basically Carolyn is reading a draft she had written of the event a year after the event. Otherwise, it didn't really offer a lot in terms of Gothic horror. Although Nancy Barrett did her usual great job as Carolyn (she also played Carolyn in the TV show), the story just wasn't that great. This story is set in 1973.
"Honeymoon From Hell" by Antoni Pearce featured Cyrus Longworth and Sabrina Jennings. They are finally married and on their honeymoon in Germany. A man is watching them, and then Sabrina is kidnapped and Cyrus falls apart before following a trail of pearls to the Black Forest (how many pearls are actually on a necklace?), which gave the whole thing a fairy tale aspect that was interesting. While Christopher Pennock does a good job of playing the character he originated, he's not my favorite character, and being inside the head of someone possibly going mad and breaking down is rarely fun, and neither was this story. This story is set in 1973.
"Retreat" by Daniel Hinchliffe features Amy Jennings in Paris with Elizabeth and Roger. Roger gets kidnapped because a witch-cursed werewolf is caught mid-change and is all twisted and bent. His buds want Amy to undo the curse, which involves her going into the were-wolf's head. Although I loved the start of the story, the ending left me a little bored. The description of the twisted werewolf was splendid and horrific. Stephanie Ellyne does a great job of portraying the grown up Amy Jennings. This is set in 1984 and is a direct sequel to "In a Broken Dream" from the Phantom Melodies set.
"1:53 AM" by Lila Whelan was the best story in this set. Doctor Robert Harper is visited by his old friend Carolyn Stoddard to investigate what appears to be a case of possession. This story felt Gothic, and felt like Dark Shadows. James Storm portrayed Dr. Harper, who seems to be new to the usual cast. If he appeared in a prior story, I don't remember him. This is set in 2003, after Return to Collinwood, so the Carolyn Stoddard in this story is thirty years older than the Carolyn Stoddard in the first story of the set. I liked this story a lot.
I thought this set was the weakest of Short Story sets from Big Finish for the Dark Shadows line. One story was great, the others were okay. None of them were horrible, but they just didn't carry the charm most Dark Shadows stories have. I just felt they were overall weaker stories, especially compared to the rest of the line.
With this, I have listened to the whole line of Big Finish's Dark Shadows stories.
