Sam is an interesting and unique character, a great addition to the Johnstone line-up of heroes and anti-heroes. He didn't set out to be a quick gun, nor was he a man of the mountains. Sam Knight was a Texas doctor, sent into the war of the States where he witnessed hell on earth - not realising there was a worse hell waiting for him back in TX. An ex-rebel soldier in a land of Reconstruction, Dr. Knight travels the west, looking to keep his head down, make a little money and survive... but this is the west; the need for a doctor almost everywhere he goes and a past that stalks his every move cause the man who pledged to do no harm and help others first into many moral quandries. By gun or by scalpel, someone is going to be acquainted with Dr. Samuel Knight, and they just may not like the outcome.

A doctor on the run from the law and from a wealthy carpetbagger makes for an exciting Western yarn. Dr. Sam Knight served as a battlefield doctor for the Confederacy and was taken as a prisoner of war. When the war ended he and his fellow Southern prisoners were released and many became roving bands of outlaws. The story that follows is one of trying to evade all those who were trying to get rid of him. He ended up in New Mexico in an area that was known for its silver mines. He ended up in the middle of a feud between two mine owners who happened to be a divorced couple who were trying to take over each other’s property. There is a lot of gun play and a good number of the bad guys who were after Doc Knight ended up dead. It’s a classic Western shoot-em-up. It’s a complicated story with a lot of excitement but the good doctor manages to come out on top in the end.

This was entertaining.

It reminds me of another of their series (Chuckwagen).

Hero fled ( for reasons) a southern state and has "possee's and bounty hunters" looking for him.

While running, he finds the time to rescue someone and save the day from bad guys and other evil doers.

Sam is a Doctor, who spent time in the Confederate army. Carpet baggers destroy his life and it goes downhill from there.

Here, he rescues a cowboy and ends up a camp Dr. For a mine. Bad guys arrive, gunshots are exchanged and Sam is in the middle.

Entertaining western adventure that reads like an action movie. Characters are shot or suffer painful injuries yet continue to saddle up and fight on for their reward/sweetheart/cause. These tough characters are fun to root for or against. If read to be enjoyed like an afternoon matinee, the reader won’t be disappointed.

What a book!

I liked this one even better than the first one! Crossing my fingers that there will be more! Was sad in several places and was really sad that he had to ride away from Hellfire!

Good book, good series.

I enjoyed reading this second book in this series. Lots of action to keep me interested, and a decent story also. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was...well, no book or author is perfect.

I really enjoy Johnstone westerns but this took a while to get the story moving. It was not overly interesting to me. Hopefully, the next one will be better.

I did not enjoy the first of the series that well and this one is way better than that. I do enjoy the voice actors and that helps a ton for sure, but this story was better. Simple, but better.

I miss the old westerns like Gunsmoke and the Rifleman and Bonanza. This fits the bill
