As a gargoyle, Jet would prefer to spend his days sitting on the corner of a building, but when Samantha insists that Krampus is going to ruin Christmas, the two of them set off on an adventure to stop the creature.
At least that’s the plan. First, they have to convince Warlord Tarrick that Krampus is not only real, but the reason incubi children have gone missing…
Note: This novella is told from the point of view of Jet, a gargoyle who sometimes takes the form of a Rottweiler. This is not a standalone story. It is meant to be read after Broken: Beautiful Monsters Vol. 3.

In this novella, Sam and Jet’d be going on an adventure to save Christmas! And I really enjoyed this adventure! I really like Sam, she is funny, she is always standing up to Tarrick and has her sire’s back. I still don’t like Tarrick and I’m glad Sam told Tarrick all the reasons that made me mad at Tarrick but I’m angry that he didn’t have anything to say!!! Well, it was short and I wanted more! Told in single POV, 3 rd person. It’s a Beautiful Monsters novella and it should be read in order. Overall, I loved it and hope you enjoy it as well!
I’m very glad that I waited a while to read Stone Sentinel after I read Broken. Lord knows how bad of a book hangover I got after reading Broken. 😁 I think it’s by far the best book I’ve read this year but hey, it’s still young so who knows, I might find a book that I like even more. 😉 Anyhow, after breaking and smashing my heart to pieces, Jex Lane decided to throw us, poor readers, a bone at the end of ”Broken”. 😏 So we are kinda having a HFN at the moment. And let’s get to reviewing this book. 💙
This book is non-romance. It was written by the POV of Jet, a gargoyle who’s the familiar of both Matthew and Samantha. A creature that’s so old it literally existed since the very beginning of this earth and created by the very Mother Earth herself. This novella is about Samantha, Matthew’s sired daughter, and Jet going on an adventure and saving Christmas from a demon called Krampus. But as a usual Jex Lane book, it’s so much more than a holiday novella. 😊 First of all, I can’t believe how witty and funny this book is from the view of Jet the gargoyle. It was hilarious! 😂 Refreshing, unique, funny and enthralling. The best possible combo of a book! 😍 And as funny and witty the book is, there are some parts that just broke my heart all over again. 💔 I still can’t get over how ruthless and inhumane Malarath’s treatment was to Matthew. At the mention of those terrible past, my heart bled all over again. 😭 And we found out about so many interesting facts and factors in this novella. 😳 Like how Tarrick views Devak and vice versa, the relationship aspect between the two lovers of Matthew, is it jealousy or is it a loyalty thing? 😱 The civil war has already started and it’s getting worse and worse. Creatures of the supernatural world are on the brink of the very civil war and being consumed by it. There’s no way they’d survive this war without picking a side. It’s to follow Matthew, the Blood God, or Malarath, the ultimate evil Incubus high King. We also got some glimpses into the future from Sam’s visions. And I’m afraid to say that they aren’t very hopeful at the moment. 😭
I think I’d literally die from the frustration of waiting for the book4 in ”Beautiful Monster”series if I read this novella right away after “Broken” because this one made my yearning for the coming book in the series increases by tenfold. 😭 I’m dying to know what happens after everyone reunited. What is Malarath plotting? Who else will be sacrificed for the good of a greater cause? 💔 I don’t know … the only thing I know after I read this one is that I need to stalk Jex Lane to death and demand to publish the next book ASAP. 😂👏
But does this novella only made be curious and wanting and left me yearning? Nooooooo!!!!! I got the biggest surprise of all at the ending of the book! 😱 It literally made me smile ear to ear and filled my icy heart with the warmest, sweetest emotions. I didn’t see that one coming! 😊 Nope, mum’s the word. 😁 You have to find out yourself if you wanna know what the hell I’m talking about. 😏 This truly is a holiday novella about family, love, trust and being there for each other no matter what. 😍 Now, I’m contented, smiling and sighing happily. 😌 Well done, you Jex! 👏
Favorite excerpts from the novella: 💗💜💗
Sometimes Jet would try to guess how Devak appeared to them. To date, he’d deduced that the guardian looked like a vampire. Attractive, based on how others reacted to him, and around the same height as Fate-Pebble. Oh, and Rage-Boulder enjoyed Devak’s cock and butthole quite a bit.
“How do you know how big Devak is? Did you order someone to tell you his dick size?” Tarrick shrugged. “It came up in friendly conversation.” “You totally did order someone.” Fate-Pebble laughed. “Oh wait, I see it now. You’re right. You didn’t actually order anyone. You slept with a woman who saw Devak and my father together and you asked her during pillow talk. Sneaky. I can’t believe you compared your cock to Devak’s. Also, he’s not small, he’s average and I hate that I know that. My life is way too weird.”
“I hate that you beat him. Imprisoned him. Lied to him. Used him. I hate that he probably only loves you because you manipulated him. And that his love is a near obsession now. I hate that he was raped and you did nothing but watch it happen from a window.”
You only finally stood up for my father when you learned what he is. Who he is wasn't enough for you.”
Fate-Pebble’s face went hard. “Maybe… maybe we can change the future.” “And if we cannot, I will be there with you until the end. And after, I will make sure your name is never forgotten.”
4.5 that was one hell of a surprise stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
I struggled with the previous book Broken, it was a difficult read and then I wasn’t a happy bunny when I realised not only was Blood Prince not available but I’d no idea when it would be. I had a mini rant and decided I’d never be able to wait for all of Matthews books but then I read this. I mean I couldn’t resist, who could with Jet the grumpy gargoyle.
I loved this book it’s funny and delightful. Jet has collected two stones Rage-Boulder and Fate-Pebble and this is an adventure to save Christmas.
This is the perfect book to read after Broken now if only the author could write a little faster please :)
Stone Sentinel by Jex Lane is a great book that has a new take on gargoyles. I just love gargoyles! I love when I find a book with them in a good light. In here, Jet, a gargoyle that can shape shift to a Rottweiler or human, has two stones he protects. Stones being creatures he has picked out himself that he decided are worthy of protection. One is an oracle, a girl. One a vampire male. He is with the girl always. It is a great story. The girl is also a vampire and needs her sire but he is not himself at the moment. It is a good story of a group of hunters and their bonds. A short but great start of a series, I want to read more! I used KU, hope the other books are in KU!
If you've read the series (and if you haven't, then what are you waiting for?!?), then you know how hard it is to let go to these characters. They end up in all your thoughts long after finishing the books. So I felt the need to get back to the Beautiful Monsters universe.
I'll again admit how much I love the writing! This author is fantastic and got me super invested into the story! That's why I just couldn't let this rest on my TBR for long.
I'm sorry to say I didn't really love it. It's just that I expected something different. We get only a few glimpses of Matthew and Tarrick seems to do what he does best, and that would be having a lot of sex - when he's not busy torturing or disappointing Matthew (or me).
This story is told from gargoyle Jet's POV. There's a lot of action and some hot scenes for those who can still stand Tarrick. I know I don't. But we also get some pretty interesting details from Sam. Well only some crumbs, that leave us wanting for more.
To say I'm looking forward to reading the next book, would be a huge understatement.
This was such a fun short story. I loved Jet’s POV and the unusual pairing.
“Jet had two stones. The responsibility of taking on even a single stone was a burden most gargoyles never bothered with. It meant a lot of moving around. Walking, talking, flying. It meant reforming their rock bodies into a fleshy animal to hide their nature. It meant keeping the stone safe. Protecting the stone. And Jet’s stones got in more trouble than most.”😃
You know I have a serious issue with this series and that issue is I can't help but love Matthew and Tarrick together. And I know I shouldn't because there relationship is literally the definition of Stockholm Syndrome but for some reason I've shipped them from jump and I've just come to terms that I'm never going to stop.
However while this novella does not feature Matthew his daughter Sam and his boo Tarrick and his Dog/Gargoyle Jet are very present. And in an attempt to save Christmas they get into all types of shenanigans.
And while all that is great and it's ultimatley just a really fun and enjoyable read there were quite a few teases for the next book which is kind of cruel since this book probably won't be out until sometime next summer😢
Also I love Sam I love her!! she gave Tarrick the gospel truth of reads which he needed to hear no matter how harsh it was. He needed to realize that despite all the pain he caused Matthew over the years for whatever reason Matthew is still in love with him, and even though he doesen't deserve that love it's there and Tarrick clearly feels the same way yet something is holding him back.
Nothing to do with the story but I lowkey hate Lilly. Sam is a much better daughter. Lilly honestly from what I've read is just not likeable she loves Incubus more then her own father. And she loves Prescot a man who actively tortured her father and stood by and watched while he was raped and overall just put him thorough hell for existing. So with that said how she can stand by him and Malarath in general is disgusting to me. She's an awful daughter Matthew should just disown her and never look back. Tarrick should do the same for his son, when the time came they both chose Malarath over there own family that should not be forgiven though i'm sure it will be either that or they both die and I'm fine with the latter.
All in all great series great book and great read left me thirsting for Blood Prince😁
I was a little hesitant when I heard that it would be in Jet's pov, but it really worked. It gave us an opportunity to really observe what was going on around us and that was cool.
Also we found out some cool things about gargoyles!
I loved Samantha, Tarrick and Jet's epic adventure to save Christmas. It was funny. I laughed through most of this short book, which is so rare for a Beautiful Monsters story but it was definitely welcomed.
We found out some HUGE things. I mean huge things in this story. Like this tiny novella held a big punch. We found out about the truth of one of Samantha 's vision, we also have a hint about Tarrick and Matthew's relationship in the future and what they will mean to each other, dragons, white witches and of course Krampus.
We also had some other disappointing reveals about what Tarrick was doing the night Matthew was attacked. That made me sad.
We also got a phone call from Tarrick's son Tarquin, the new High Lord General and that conversation was shocking and sad.
Also this is funny reminder how much sex plays in politics in Incubus society. Though, surprisingly, this book did not have much sex because Jet did not want to see that! Haha.
I love Tarrick with every book that I read and I am so convinced that him and Matthew belong to each other.
I loved this cute story! I can't wait until Blood Prince!
5/5 stars!
PS. Samantha Rocks! "Fate-Pebble"

Being in Jet's head is awesome!!! Especially, seeing characters you thought you knew well through his eyes. Jet sees everything in its true form without magical veils, barriers or glamour. I want to take a moment to admire how Devak looks in his true form. All light and pure brightness. My beautiful pleasure guardian angel. I don’t mean to say I have anything against how he appears to others. After all, I adore his gorgeous blood wings but he looks angelic in his true form. Like I said, simply beautiful.
Apart from Jet, the stars of this novella are also Samantha and Tarrick. They should go out together more, they make a great team. It was good for Tarrick and Sam that they spent some quality time together. I mean, how are they gonna help Matthew if they can't stand each other. I don’t think they are really best friends, at least not yet, but they are on a good way LOL Now Tarrick must go on a team-building with Devak too. That would be definitely worth seeing. I doubt that Tarrick ever beded a guardian but I bet he would be up for a challenge. When he's in a mood he can be damn charming and flirty. I'm sure he could charm Devak's pants off. Or not. Anyway I really want to see that.
I loved this short set after the 3rd Beautiful Monsters book. Told from Jet’s (the gargoyle) POV, it made for a funny take on the lives of the “fleshlings” he protects.
Here, Sam, Tarrick, and Jet are off to save Christmas from Krampus...a child stealing monster most believe is pure fantasy. Along the way, we meet a great cast of characters. Tarrick being Tarrick whips it out plenty, but all sex is off the page.

Okay, I'mma need Book 4 ASAP. And I wouldn't mind some more shorts from Jet's POV, either. I loved how he called Matthew and Sam his "stones" and how he was absolutely over everything sex. (Tarrick really will fuck anything, won't he?) Also, I sometimes I can totally relate with the gargoyle's desire to just check out, hang out and NOT be around "people" (humans, vampires, incubi, etc.) - watching and waiting but not wanting to associate with anyone. People are stupid and exhausting.
Oh, and while the story is told from Jet's POV, I think Sam is the character the reader is supposed to embody or connect most with and in many ways I do...loved how she defended Davos' perfectly average sized dick, too.
I’m gonna be honest, when this first started out it was looking pretty bland and I didn’t think it would live up to the actual books. Once again, Jex Lane proved me wrong. Obviously I wouldn’t have loved more Matthew in this, but that’s coming in Blood Prince (can’t wait omg!!!). Tarrick and Sam’s dynamic in this was hilarious and I loved getting Jet’s perspective!
Though this is a short novella, the plot packed a punch; you’ll find plenty of suspense, action, and endearingly heartfelt moments/scenes within 91 pages of awesome.
Watching a team of unlikely companions (a vampire & incubus) through the eyes of a stoic gargoyle made for some hilarious moments(and surprisingly, dialogue). I fell in love with Jet early on in this series, so I was over the moon to get a glimpse at this beloved world/characters through his POV. And he did not disappoint—his mind is an odd (yet wholly entertaining) place, to say the least.
Unlike the previous books in this series, this novella didn’t have a lot of “steamy encounters”, but in all honesty, I didn’t find that it was lacking the “on-the-page” sex. (And seriously, it’s rare that I am saying that with a straight face, haha!) However, with Tarrick in the mix, you know there’s plenty of kink and innuendo going around. (And plenty of cock talk, haha!)
There are Easter eggs galore with this novella, so it is a MUST-READ if you plan to read book 4. (And trust me when I tell you the ending has me all sorts of excited for what more is in store for these Beautiful Monsters!)
OH MY FUCKING GOD!! Some unanswered questions get answered in this book. Some answers felt like a phantom knife was shoved into my gut and twisted, pulled out and left me to bleed to death.
This book is Crazy and Funny and Sad. While this book sated my need for Blood Prince it also made it 10× worse!! LOL
Adorable shorty told from Jet's point of view. Jet's a gargoyle and the familiar of Sam and Matthew although from his view it's the other way around: both vampires are his stones and stones are to be protected. Here Sam takes him on an adventure to hunt Krampus who everyone believes is only a fairytale told to children to make them behave around Christmas time. Obviously he's not.
This short story is also a good example how a lot can shift if the story is told by another character because Sam and Jet are not alone on their hunt but get accompanied by Tarrick who doesn't one minute believe in Sam's mission and does it only to humor her and protect her but because we see him through Jet's eye he suddenly is not the ice cold, impenetrable and scheming incubus but caring and if it becomes about Matthew even insecure - although he would never admit it - and a bit playfully jealous. I like that very much and hope Jex Lane finds a way to explain his behavior in the other books but without belittle his guilt. Devak believes him selfish but here he's not and after all the guardian's impression might be tinted by his own experience with incubi.
Can't wait to get book 4 although with all those hints she placed in this story ...
In all honesty, I didn’t really care for this novella after I finished book 3. I wasn’t even going to read it because I was like Krampus? Really?
But some reviewers said that there were little details that would be helpful for book 4 so I said what the hell. It’s short and will add to my reading challenge.
Boy, I’m freaking glad I did! Jet is hilarious and I freaking love his “stone names” for Matthew and Sam! They are hysterical! I laughed quite a bit throughout this novella. A lot of good points and problems about Tarrick and Matthew’s relationship and past were presented by Sam to Tarrick. Hell yeah, Sam! And more of the plot and its mysteries came up from Sam’s secrets and visions. Also, Tarrick was portrayed way more as a slut than how Matthew sees him haha the surprise was super intriguing.
All in all, I recommended reading this after Broken!
I really love Tarrick!!! But everyone already knows that :)
Ok, let's move on a review... I really loved this one :) It is so cool as the story is written from the Jet's POV. He is this quiet protective gargoyle always near Sam and constantly adorable :) It is surprising how many thoughts go through Jet's mind at the mundane things that his stones do. It was (to use Rage Boulders word) fucking hilarious :D
Great novella that stars some fav characters from the Beautiful Monster series. It's told from Jet's POV and it's fabulous. Not only is the story snarky and entertaining , but the readers get some rather interesting NEW information about our MCs and hints as to what may be coming! A must read for BeMo fans!!!
