Help for Many Difficult Emotions This book covers a wide range of negative emotions and situations you might find yourself in, such as: anger, stress, negative thoughts, worry, insecurity, and unhealthy comparison. The book is like one ongoing motivational pep-talk. After reading the book, it’s hard to not have at least one thing that you realize you need to stop doing so you can live a happier life. As I read it, I highlighted several areas that speak helpful, encouraging words to keep a person from unnecessarily suffering in the dark because of negative thinking. These are important truths that people need to hear. The main message of the book is to stop thinking negatively. The author points out that many of our thoughts are exactly the same as the day before. Realizing how our thoughts remain the same is the first step in improving them. The author also suggests you consider what you speak over yourself. If you speak negatively, you might be entering into a self-fulfilling prophecy or worse agreeing with the enemy. My favorite line from the book is, “To change your attitude, you have to change your beliefs. The main cause of a bad attitude is wrong beliefs about life.” All these things and more make this book helpful for having permission to give up negative thinking. As I was reading, I did notice ways the book could be edited to remove more than a few mistakes. These became distracting at first, but eventually faded into the background. Also, the book can be too simplistic at times for my tastes. But many people want simple when struggling with something. I’m not in complete agreement with the author’s theology on Satan. The author states (or implies) that Satan can speak directly into our minds. My belief stops short of saying that Satan has the same access to our minds that God does. I would explain this more by saying our minds can be influenced by good or by evil and we have a choice as to what we dwell on. Only God, through his Holy Spirit who indwells us, can speak that directly. In the book, the distinction between our thoughts and Satan’s influence could be made clearer. I give this book four stars for the content and focusing on the truth of the Bible. Three stars for the editing and staying too simple at times. If you need some encouragement to take your thoughts captive, read this book.
I highly recommend this book to those who finds themselves constantly worrying or overcome by negative thoughts! This book is perfect for bible study groups and Christian book clubs.
Author Stephanie R. Reck has written a very clear, encouraging, and biblical guide to a disciplined mind. We all struggle against bouts of fear and doubt, trials and depression, selfishness and perfectionism. As a woman prone to perfectionism, codependency, and anxiety, I found this book to be a godsend. It is a beacon of hope! I plan to read it again and buy more as gifts to other women that I know struggle with anxiety like I do.
Reck speaks the truth in love, humbly shares her own previous struggles with an undisciplined mind, and always points the reader to Jesus and His word for help. I appreciate how she offers practical advice such as keeping a gratitude journal and writing down scriptures that remind us who God is and who He says we are. Reck speaks with wisdom that clearly comes from a close relationship with God and her own experiences. She is a qualified psychologist and licensed therapist and her knowledge from this education shines through, but it is the wisdom of God that illuminates everything she writes. You will see what I mean when you pick up this book!
Reck always points to Jesus, reminding us to seek Him first, to lay our fears at His feet, and do what we need to do to stop anxiety. I have put her wisdom into practice by keeping a daily gratitude journal, avoiding excessive amounts of negative news, and intentionally making time daily to seek God in prayer and scripture. Like she says, there is a constant battle for your mind, but the more you establish godly habits, the more often you will experience His victory over your thoughts and have the mind of Christ. Be blessed!
The topic of this book is near and dear to my heart. I have personally struggled with toxic thinking most of my life and know firsthand how drastically it can impact your life. In a very negative way. Fortunately, God has given us the ability to overcome and people like Stephanie Reck who can rightly shine light on the tools needed to discipline our mind and bring our thoughts captive to Christ.
The author is a certified counselor and licensed social worker, offering expert advice and time-tested tools to live above toxic thinking and train our minds for good, but the content is not presented in a dry, clinical manner. It’s presented in a conversational tone that is very accessible, engaging, and encouraging. The book offers hope and no judgement, and is both inspirational and practical, covering relevant topics like forgiveness, bitterness, stress, fear, co-dependency, gratitude, and contentment. All things most of us deal with every day, and which are rooted in our mindsets.
I immediately felt a connection with the author, and I so appreciate that every topic, tip, and tool is grounded in the transforming Word of God. Scripture verses, reflection questions and clear-cut strategies are included throughout the book and will help readers easily transfer the content from the written page to their daily lives.
I recommend this book for individuals and study groups who recognize the power of the mind and are ready to make positive changes that will result in a more disciplined mind and ultimately greater peace and contentment in our culture that is so often negative and toxic.
This is a good book not only to read but to have handy for a motivational pick-me-up. Reading Stephanie Reck's words are like getting a visit from an old friend - they're comforting, motivating and gave me a gentle kick-in-the-rear to stay focused on my goals. Well done, Stephanie!
