Virgil Scott and his best friend Roy Sheffield left their horse ranch and were making one of their routine runs to Denver to deliver thirty-two horses. But the short trail drive proved to be anything but routine when late that first night, they were set upon by men wielding deadly clubs. In just minutes, Virgil found himself face down in a quickly flowing creek taking him downstream to what would surely be his death. All he could feel was the icy cold water and excruciating pain from his two broken legs. He had given up and there was nothing he could do. Only his canine and equine friends would be able to save him if he ever hoped to provide justice for his murdered partner.
Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.
The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.
As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.
My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"
Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.
I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)
"And what did the doctor say?"
"I'll ask him when we get back."
"Yes, you will."
I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.
Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.
So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.
The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.
Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.
Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.
Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.
They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.
It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.
They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.
A lot of typos wrong names used for sheriff ,story too predictable.I really hated the scene when Virgil kissed Josephine and said that was to show her what his Willie would have . Ugh
Virgil and Roy were good friends started a horse selling business for themselves. Raised and trained their horses, and their name was well known because of their dedication to raising good horses. Their horses brought top dollars depending on the sex and breed they charged four hundred or two hundred dollars per horse and that herd could contain thirty to sixty horses. They made money. They also had border collides which Virgil trained as herders, which kept down the cost of hiring help...his horses and dogs loved him and ::) he loved them. While on the move to sell a herd, he and his friend were bushwacked by a fellow horse raiser who had fell on hard times due to a disease his horses had contacted. This rancher was about to lose his ranch, so what do they decided was to rob Virgil and Roy, they knew the trail they always took and set up the ambush, killing his friend Roy and crippling Virgil and tossing him into the river to drown. Virgil's collies rescued him from drowning and his horse Bessie helped him get on her. He stayed awake long enough to make it to a little homestead, where the woman Willie and her two children helped Virgil. You all know that this author exposes the human elements which start with abuses, betrayals and the wonderful out comes that occurs. There are good western love stories.. I am sure everyone will agree. They are believable because we've heard and witness these events, the only difference is the times...
This is one of those 5 STARS books that I know truly deserves every star & is a reminder to me that most fantastic excellent books should get 4 STARS; because 5 STARS should be saved for the special ones that surpass the usual fantastic excellent books. Virgil's Herd, is one of the special books that needs special praise! It was a well thought out storyline and description of surroundings outstounding. Roy & Virgil had a friendship since childhood, they had been business partners since teenagers, plus they had combined their bank accounts that included the money from the ranch/ farms inherited, all the money they made during the War Between the States, selling horses to the Union, and which continued to receive interest. These two young men were 2 of the richest in the Country but just seemed like 2 horse ranchers. On the horse drive Virgil & Roy were attacked with Roy murdered & Virgil hurt left to die, horses stolen. They had no enemies they knew of. Virgil with the help of his dogs & horse was saved & made it to Willie's farm, a woman with a boy & little girl. They helped save Virgil & he felt a closeness to the little family, in part from them, in part from mourning Roy, & in part from the last conversation he & Roy had. The horse thieves were from a well to do ranch that just had an emergency problem, how they now & again, time to go on a cattle drive & his horses turned up sick. So, even if they used the family's horses they were still short for the drive; however, if they didn't make the drive they wouldn't be able to cover payments at the bank. The man, owner of the ranch decided the 2 single men that owned the horses were nobody important as him & his family ranch. So for the 1st time they needed instead of trying for a solution legally, asking Virgil & Roy to help, his pride turned him where stealing & murder was more acceptable. Virgil healed & needed to honor Roy & what was right, he was going to find the murderers, his horses, and get his longed for family, Willie, & the kids if they were come with him home to his ranch. What a beautiful show of friendship & the honoring of it, with how Virgil took care of his friend's body when he was healed & back on his feet. Also, they both felt the same way about right, truth, & honor; then it was for both of them to find the culprits it would get the murderer. Virgil found his companion & love he wanted to spend his life with and desired her with all of the hot emotions of a man. He showed the will of a honorable man in love when 2 different times he was tempted by ladies. 1st time her body was full with her buttons undone her bousom was about to spill out, but he was bedridden & stuck, & as a man it was hard to say no laying trapped there; however, he just thought of Willie, his wonderful Willie and no other woman can compete with her. Also, knowing he would risk his future with Willie & her 2 kids if he didn't manage to hold off the nurse, who found out he was well off. Then, the rancher's daughter who had grown up always knowing she was desired by men. The rancher & his daughter found out Virgil lived & she decided to go offer up her body, after all men didn't say no, plus, she wouldn't mind marrying him just for herself, & if it saved the ranch & her father & brothers, too well ok. Same thing as the nurse, Virgil held out for Willie & family because he knew what he wanted for the rest of his life. What a refreshing truth to read that all men don't act like they have no restraint or ability to restrain as if they are identical to a female dog & can only breed when the opposite sex is around. My point is that if they have no control, then no relationship can be special & love is a myth; but I don't believe that. Lots of action, interesting, interesting characters, sexy ladies, trained dogs & horses, intrigue, drama, guns, gun fights, and just some warm funny stuff, drama, and maybe horsey beer. Hahaha! Loved it. 5 STARS isn't enough! EXCITEMENT! ACTION! GUNS! NO RAPES! SPECTACULAR HORSE REACTIONS TO WHISTLES! Just a honest book about 2 friends who believes in right & wrong, hard work, honor. WONDERFUL BOOK!
Mr. C. J. Petit does an excellent job of providing very exciting stories of our old western episodes and I have had the opportunity to enjoy most of his great stories. Too, there aren't any repetitive storylines to annoy his readers. This is an exceptionally heartwarming storyline with plenty of exciting experiences throughout the entire story!
Worthy of the five stars I awarded this story and the characters never ceased to lose my attention from page one to the final paragraph. I have no problem with the author's ability to maintain my complete interest throughout the entire story, as the excitement only increases with each relevant episode.
I certainly recommend this book, as I do with all novels written by Mr. Petit. His novels are so completely relevant too the time frame he is referring to, and as of this date I am yet to find one of novels that doesn't fulfill my expectations. His characters go full bore and I am completely mesmerized by his storylines from beginning to end.
Virgil and Roy were hurding their horses into Denver when they were attacked by the slash l riders and left for dead
Virgil woke up as he was being drugged out of the stream by his dogs and his horse came up Bessie and helped him get up on her after he splinted his two broken legs. He had no saddle but he had his best horse under him and Bessie took him across the country toward Denver but he couldn't make it and saw a ranch house and stop there and it was Willie's Richardson's ranch House with her two children Paul and Effie. They took care of him and he gave her money for her to send her son to Denver to John thorson to get the doctor and to get a wagon out with supplies. This was the start of their relationship as he was incapacitated in her bedroom recovering from two broken legs. Danger and suspense were next as he slowly healed up and tried to figure out how come they were robbed of their horses and his friend Rob murdered and himself almost murdered. The robbery just didn't make sense but it was vicious.
Having scribbled a few reviews of Mister Petit's books, I guess I have nothing to add to all the good things I've already said. Ah, but there is something. Certainly in this particular book there is an element of humor weaving through much of the story. This has to do with life and death, and survival, as it is portrayed among the many supporting characters in the story. Attractions and relationships between people, particularly men and women, form and dissipate quickly. And people take what they want from each other without thought of retribution or a moral context. Gun fights, ambushes and stealing seem a way of life, and death. Of course academic historians will point out that this was just a natural thing in the wild American west. However, in his writing about it, particularly in this book, I have the impression that Petit adds it to provide levity to otherwise tough lives.
I have been reading books both hard back and soft cover and now e-books for almost fifty years now and I have got to say that this book has got to be the best one out of over a thousand books that I have read!! It has everything in a western that you'll ever want. It has the good, the bad and the ugly! There is suspense that keeps from wanting to put the book down. It also has the parts that will bring a big smile to your face!! I have enjoyed reading several of this authors books but I have got to say that Virgil's Here will always have a place on my kindle!!
A Very Unusual Horse Western/A Broken Leg Romance/Rustling/Murder/Justice
CJP has written a story of two men who build a successful horse ranch in Colorado. They had been in business many years when a nearby ranchers horses died. Then came the rustling, murder and recovery of the survivor of the 2 men. Then came justice. My description of the novel is subjective as opposed to objective. However, this is an educational experience in racing horses and dogs. It is also an excellent read for the genre.....ER
The wrong that killed Virgils friend and horses stolen came to justice after Virgil exhilarated from his death blow on head and smashed legs by greedy men. Meeting Will have him a new goal to make sure he survived after going after the killers and thieves. It showed him a true meeting of love and happiness. Even after being propositioned by three beautiful women, all he needed is to think of Will and does not come under the spell of those women. Another exciting and adventurous story by CJPetit. Fantastic author of the west.
Virgin's Herd is already one of my favorite books by C.J.PETIT and this is just the first time that I've had the pleasure to read it. It is such a classically cohesive story written by this author that is exactly what you expect every time you pickup a new release from Mr. Petit. I should know, I own 27 of his books and have never been disappointed by it's historical content or the suspenseful action. 👏BRAVO!!!!BRAVO!!!!!
I stumbled on this author C.J. Petit by accident, but from the very first book I have been a huge fan. The western are so well written that I never feel like they should end as soon as they do. The true western feel is so prominent and always a little romance, but mostly it is the pure emotions of the characters that grab me the most. If you love old time western stories you will love these.
Great story with my favorites: A god man, faithful dogs, and faithful horses.
Two good men started a successful horse ranch with 9 collies. Virgil really new how to train them and the most important—love them! Another ranch farmer guides his sons into a life of deceit, theft, and killing. Love how the dogs and his favored horse Bessie rescues him from the stream with two broken legs. The romances in his books are just right! Justice always prevails.
I simply loved every word. This was the best western I have read in a good while. I loved everyone around Virgil and Willie. I also love dogs and horses. Please, please keep writing. I did not stop reading until the end. Again, I want to thank. This is a must read.
I love reading Petit's books. This book was full of unexpected twist and turns which made it very hard to lay down. I stayed up almost all night reading. His ways with his horses and dogs were just a delight to imagine. The plot was strong, with outlaws, romance, tenderness and compelling odds to overcome.
As usual another great book, C.J. Petite has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Once I sit down i want to read until it's time to go to bed. I love the plots on the stories they hold your attention from the beginning of the book the end. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.
Really good story. Sadly characters are misnamed in a couple of instances. Correct first name with another characters last name. Had to re-read in several places to figure out what the author was trying to say. I've enjoyed many of Petits books, this one was work.
I am tempted to put in spoilers, but will decline. Taken as a whole and following Mr petit's general pattern, this is a very good story with violence, an element of humour and of course romance. At times I was tempted to skip to the end, but persevered and enjoyed the read. Would recommend.
A different aspect of early western life. A rancher with a financial problem who lost his herd of working horses to disease takes a criminal way to get a new herd. The story follows the life of the sole survivor of the horse ranch through his recovery and retribution against the rancher and his accomplices. The insights of the survival with the help of his well trained herd dogs and horses is astounding.
This was my second time around for this book. As usual Mr. Petit delivers a great storyline, lots of actions with a bit of romance too. He is my favorite writer and with Victim's Herd he certainly proved it! Highly recommended. If you have never read his books you need to start!
Guns, horses, and money. Virgil had it all until his best friend is murdered ... and he himself is taken to the edge of death. Can a destitute family and a will to survive allow Virgil to pay back the deed? Great survival tale with both endearing and demented characters. Well paced with tight dialogue. Inspirational to all of us frontier story fans. Two thumbs up for Petit's work. PKB
I dearly love C.J.'s inventiveness in story line and characters. I jump on new books! My only problem is a few editing errors and a sentence now and again with really bad grammar. Still a devoted fan!!!
about C.J.Petit's books. This, like all the rest blends action, drama, emotion, and romance with the fine touch of a consummate story teller. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good read.
This book is a great western story. Virgil Scott is a true man in every sense of the sword and a wonderful cowboiy. Willie is a wonderfully strong woman. A great read!
I look forward to each new book by Mr Petit and this one is one of the best. I am always amazed that you can tell basically the same story in so many different and exciting ways.
Simple western, romance. The hero raises horses, exceptionally fine horses with the help of well trained border collies. He courts and wins his sweetheart and cleans up a large number of horse thieves and killers making it a better place to live and raise a family.
I would gIve given this book five stars but there was some confusion with calling the characters by the wrong name several times. But it was good book I enjoyed very much.
This is a rough and tumble Western that will keep readers guessing from the beginning, a definite page turner. I have never read a poor novel by this author and I consider this novel the best so far. I highly recommend this author.
If some director in Hollywood doesn't make a movie from Mr. Peter's books then they should all be fired! Heart and soul, danger and violence, and real stories of real men and women who were the Old West!!!
I have only been reading western S by C I Legit for about a month and the ones I have read in that time have all been excellent stories and all you want to do is carry on shrill you have finished the book I would recommend for any western fan to follow C.J.Petit
