When I met you
I’ve always wondered
How I’ve never met
Anyone quite like you

When we parted
I’ve always wondered
How everyone else
Reminded me of you

Not relatable but I kinda enjoyed reading it. :)

P.S. I found this book by chance.

Reading the verses in this book reminds me of Lang Leav's poems because of the theme and style of writing of Dawn Lanuza. Those who had recently broke up and still in the phase of trying to move on, they can be able to relate to the poems in this collection.
The Last Time I'll Write About You
However, as for someone who isn't experiencing that unfortunate situation, I believe that some of the poems are a bit bland because they lack the emotion that they want to assert.

Can't even believe that this is getting high ratings. I don't mean to be rude, but this is a piece of drivel.

I'll tell you why:

- Poems are Lang Leav-esque, and Leav's poems are infamously terrible.
- Lacking significant literary devices. This better be slapped on greeting cards, and not in bookpapers.
- Clichéd and repetitive. Themes from the collection were already rehashed by contemporary poets before. This doesn't offer new/fresh perspective.
- Is this a poetry or prose (musings)? Because most of the sentences, ehrm lines, are only awkwardly separated by freaking enjambments, that when you combine them, it becomes a prose!
- No proper book description. And also, the given description doesn't say much.
- Clunky writing. I got stumbled by the stanzas!

The Last Time I'll Write About You is a good poetry collection. It centers on love, break-ups and recovery from a broken relationship. The poems are simple and relatable. I must admit some of them are common and not as striking as I've thought, it's still a nice go-to poetry read.

I'm a huge fan of Dawn Lanuza and I inhale her books like crack, but for some reason, I still struggle when I'm reviewing her books. Probably because I'm finding it hard to put my ~feels~ into words. I think a lot of reviewers are with me on this. But I'll try to summon all the words I can get to show how I adore this book.

description

If you have been following me or my blog, you'll know that I have read and reviewed Dawn Lanuza's previous books here on the blog and I loved every one of them. That's why I was so excited when I found out that she has a new book AND that it will be a collection of poems. So first off, I just want to say how proud I am of the author for venturing out of the usual genre she writes.

I didn't finish TLTIWAY right away and I did that on purpose. Every line hits me. The book is about the stages of a relationship and it's amazing how you'll relate in every poem. This book comes with honest feelings about adoration, hurt and moving on. In short, it's for every kind of reader who have been there and going through it. If you're that person, let this book help in healing you.

Half a star deducted because I'm looking for one thing that I can't figure out what and it's really frustrating me because I can't explain what that 'one thing' is.

But even with that, I have nothing more to say about TLTIWAY other than it's beautifully written. With beautiful art. And that it's beautifully haunting. It hits home, heart break, pain, longing, lost love. It's real, it's raw, it's relatable.  It feels like a secret you don't want to share but at the same time you want everyone to know. The words linger, and that's truly the most important gift a book can ever give you. I highly recommend picking up a copy--it will stay with you for days, if not years. But one piece of advice. Read it slowly. Highlight passages. Bookmark them, write them on your hands, muse about how closely they relate to your life. Then read it again.

TRUTH
You read these things
And you ask the world,
Why doesn't it happen
To someone like you?

Deep in your heart
You know the answer:
It's because you don't let it.

Since this kind of poetry has been the trend lately, what I look for is something that would shine from the rest. A lot of books I've read lately seem to be patterned after Kaur or Leav, except for The Witch Doesn't Burn in this One, which was unique and truly outstanding.

Now this book is not quite bad. It's just that the poems here are rather simplistic, does not have much depth, and feels kind of generic. For me, they felt Leav-ish, which is not a good thing even if Lang Leav is one of the famous poets nowadays. To be honest, this book is indistinguishable from other poetry books I've read in the past.

I think people who are a fan of Leav's works will like this better than I do.

Reminded me of first love and the angst that usually comes with it, but didn't impress all that much. It was nice, yeah, but rather simplistic.

SUNBEAM

You light up the room
Wherever you go
With your wit and charm
You turn things around

You light up the room
You're a rush of blood
You're a ray of sun
You lighten me up.

My sister is a poetry reader, she has a quaint collection of them. I've tried to read some of it, but I couldn't get into them except for The Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan. Most of it sing about unrequited love, or any form of romantic infatuation, I remain to be unbothered. I guess, which is weird, because I don’t mind reading stories about romance that straddle those lines.

Lanuza’s The Last Time I'll Write About You is like a classic Lang Leav’s style. That’s a good news if you’re a fan, but not so much if you’re not. Although, I would still recommend it, especially to new poetry readers. This is a short collection compared to most. And, you won’t get bored.

The sun burns my skin
In your bed as we lay
It’s a clear sign:
We’re not made for the day.

We’re creatures of the night
Straddled in the sheets
The dawn is in sight
We part as soon as we meet.

There’s some rough edges, but overall I really like it. It’s a quick refreshing read about heartbreak. Readers could vividly feel the hurt.

I've heard about Dawn Lanuza even before she was published by Andrews McMeel. With a striking title for a collection of poems, The Last Time I'll Write About You delved in with the topic of first love and heartbreak.

In Hindsight
Darkness is a friend
We've been long acquainted
It was nice knowing your light
But I could not be mended.

Sadness is a cloak
I wear around my shoulders
You let the sun soak
On my skin to recover.

But the dark, it remains
And you were slowly fading
You bring the sun,
But it keeps on setting.

It was like an unsent love letter to an ex that once became her life or a personal diary that she finally shared for everyone to read and learn from what she had experience. Though the tone was scaled with undeniable emotions of hurt, despair and sadness where I found some pieces in this collection written beautifully, most of it were rather flat and simple. There were times it felt like broken in the wheel with awkward stops and pauses.

P.S.
Think of it as cruel
Think of it as hateful
None of this is true
Believe it or not at all

This started out for you
Only it ended for me
So with finality:
This is the last time I'll ever write about you.

The ending gave a message on self-love and I hope that the author explore far more a bit in that but overall, this collection is relatable in every sense there is.

This is definitely the kind of poetry I want to read, the kind I can relate to, the kind that speaks to me and make me think.

It's not pompous, not too flowery, it's just the truth of what Dawn Lanuza went through and I don't think you need more to make a good poetry collection. You need poems sharing the honest truth, however ugly or beautiful it is, simply the truth.

I'm so interested in reading more of this author's work now!

But I will not live in the shadows

Oh my god. This was so bad. Lacked originality and fire in the verses. The same old whining about a person who prolly is an asshole.

read this back in January, but I sifted through my notes and found a review :)

IN A NUTHSELL
I'm not brave enough to love you
The same way
You're not strong enough to take me on.

I actually ended up really enjoying this. it came as a bit of a surprise because of the reviews I've read, and I understand where those are coming from, but I'm happy I still gave it a chance. Dawn Lanuza's writing, I see, is often compared to Lang Leav's. I've been enjoying Leav's poetry thus far, so I guess it's fitting for me to enjoy someone else's similar style as much.

the only problem I have with this one is I was confused with the line breaks. i have a digital copy, but it was just formatted weird. I don't know if that's just my particular copy or something else, but nod bad enough that I couldn't deal with it. the words still seemed to flow seamlessly despite it.

also, bonus: I didn't know the author was a fellow Filipino until afterwards, and that revelation made me proud!

Actual rating: 3.5

First off, I had really HIGH expectations because blogger friends rated this 5 stars. And this is definitely a really good start for an author's first ever poetry collection! I think I just expected to get really intense feels but most of my feelings varied from poem to poem and some were "OOHHH YASSS" to "hm okay, next." I guess I also couldn't relate fully except for several poems here and there (which may have something to do with how I've never been in any kind of romantic situation at all le sigh) and that's totally my own damn problem. But really, if you have #hugot/past-relationship-feels, you should totally give this a read.

I was excited when I saw screenshots of the book on Twitter, it seemed interesting. And then I read the book. There's a reason I keep seeing the same poems from different posts and it's because those are the only ones that are actually good.

It's too reminiscent of Lang Leav and I hate Lang Leav. Good thing this was released as an eBook or else it would be such a waste of paper.

To young hearts.
Keep beating.
Keep breaking.
Keep falling in love.

3 stars.

This was okay? While I did like a few of the poems, I've just found that I like poems more that are about social justice issues (feminism, mental health, etc.), rather than romance.

This is another one of those poetry collections that really hit me where it hurts. In my opinion, a book is only good if it made you FEEL something. Well written and relatable. Loved it.

Heartbreak never really was my thing, sadly, as well as poetry.

Honestly, this was more of an unfamiliar territory for me and for the most part, I like swimming through this kind of stuff BUT I can't really say it hits "right in the feels". This book for me is flavored in contrasting tastes. I liked the segmented and offbeat rhythm the poems have but sometimes it comes off bland and troublesome. The words, however, are cut raw in the flesh of the pages unfiltered and edgy. I think that's the magical material that keeps this book intact. But aside from that, I was actually surprised that this was written by a Filipina haha! Shooked huh? Overall this was a 3.5 for me. It's just a fast read so yeah, support our writers pls!

ARE YOU OKAY?
I’m shouting this to the universe
In case you need to answer.

I was browsing the poetry section, flipping through books. I saw this poem and I immediately bought this book. This poem in particular spoke to me, and it was not the only one. My absolute favorite was EPILOGUE (p. 161)

Alas, I didn’t vibe with about half of the poems, but I really enjoyed the ones I did like.

EDIT: looked thru this again today and i was being generous. knocking off a half star
