Serene Sorcery -- Makoto makes her way to a fabric shop in town in order to sew a new robe, and ends up crafting a surprise for Chinatsu, too. It's weird... normally I don't like stories that don't have a strong plot, but this series is just so darn cute and fun that I find myself loving every volume! Also, Beachy is SO cute uwu

Pruning the orchard, a cooking lesson at school, meeting a weird bitey creature at the beach, and other everyday activities.

This book made me hungry.

Witch-in-training Makoto does normal things with a slight twist.

In this volume, Makoto makes a new robe, does some cooking at school, prunes apple trees, checks in with her mentor, and meets the most adorable little katsina (apparently this one is a beach spirit) that looks like a white ball with bunny ears. I adore any scenes with Chito, Makoto's black cat familiar, and this volume has some great ones.

Can't wait for the 5th volume!

I'm getting quite attached to these characters.

Chinatsu is so cute, and Kei is so reliable.

Makoto's familar is also hilariously sassy, and Al is so tiny but full of attitude as well :P

I also learned in this volume that it's okay to enjoying doing things because it means you learning more about the things you love. :D

Flying Witch as a whole is a healing manga and thus super relaxing, but this volume particularly was a relaxing one. Nothing too big happened, but in a good way.

We've finally outstripped the episodes from the anime. I was wondering how well I'd do once that happened, but the stories are continuing to be a lot of fun. I find I'm savoring them a bit more as I go through. Once more, the height of magic appears to be the joy of the everyday, and there isn't anything functioning as the antagonist. Nor really any personal growth. It shouldn't work, but it does.

Still adorable, fun, quick reads. I liked getting to meet Makoto's mentor, Beachy is adorable and I'd love to know more about that creature. Also enjoyed the fabric trip and the cat fabric that looked so similar to her familiar

I love this book/series so much. It's so relaxing to read.
In this volume I especially loved the first chapter.
It was very heartwarming what Makoto did with the extra fabric.
I loved that Chito got a new cat bed out of it as well. 😻

Such a serene and leisurely manga with wonderfully delicate line work, (so, jealous!). This volume, for the most part was covered in the anime chapter for chapter. Ishizuka's character placements and their body language is to die for. I learn something new, art-wise every volume. One of my favs!

Summary:

Makoto Kowata is a witch. Or rather, she's a witch in training. As such, she has packed up all her belongings (and cat) to live with distant relatives. It's a bit of a family tradition – a way of sending young witches out into the world - but in a gentler way.

All things said and done, Makoto has gotten pretty comfortable in her new (temporary?) home. More importantly, she's started to act more witchy. It helps that she has a young aspiring witch that she can assist.

Review:

Flying Witch Vol. 4 is every bit the magical and calming read that the rest of the series has been, at least up until this point. I'm assuming that will continue, but one never knows. If you're looking for an enchanting and chill read, this is the one to check out!

It's nice seeing Makoto do more magical things, or magical-adjacent things, for that matter. Likewise, it's cute seeing her little cousin fall in love with magic. My favorite part of this volume probably had to do with a magical little critter, but who's surprised by that?

There is a strong deviation in this volume (or so it felt to me) as we focus on other characters and cooking for a bit, but it was a lot of fun, so I'm not complaining. However, it does make me realize how heavily we're leaning into the slice-of-life style with this series.

Highlights:
Slice-of-life
Witchy Tale
Cat Familiar

More slice of life with novice witch, Makoto in Volume 4 of Flying Witch. In this we see her replacing her old witch’s robes - Chito was so funny in this chapter. We also see Makoto, Kei and Nao in cooking practice, which I enjoyed! Some family bonding in the orchard, plus learning somethings you probably never knew about orchards (Makoto and Akane are definitely related). We also get to meet two new faces and one familiar one (Inukai) in this volume with the introduction of Makoto’s mentor and a “beach bunny” who is totally adorable. I really enjoy the character dynamics and interactions in this series, I also like that we’re seeing more of the familiar’s and their personalities (especially Chito). This volume continues with the easy, light pace of previous volumes.

As Makoto learns how to navigate her new neighborhood, she expands her witchcraft skills, including communing with her familiar, Chito; making new cloaks for herself and her cousin, Chinatsu; and helping apple trees grow. It’s encouraging to see her get more comfortable in her own skin while continuing to learn about her chosen field. Relationship building is a major part of Makoto’s personal and professional development. The more time and attention she pours into this, the more she flourishes, as do those around her. This collection of gentle, good-humored stories provides a welcome reprieve from the drama of the news cycle and shows us how things could be if we treated each other (and ourselves) with kindness and patience.

Reminescent of Kiki's Delivery Service but EVEN BETTER.

I'm really enjoying reading the Manga as much as I loved the series on Hulu. The Manga is really well done by its writer. I recommend it to anyone who has or hasn't seen its Anime. I watched initially because it has always reminded me of Kiki's Delivery Service. And because of that, if you are also a fan of Kiki then you should giving Flying Witch a shot. It keeps you entertained by following through with character development. It makes you want to find out more about the WITCHES and as well as the supporting characters, such as the Family that Makoto is staying with. Quite an excellent story.
