Britta isn't cool. She isn't popular, she isn't pretty. School life isn't much fun, but that's the way the world is. Which would be a terrible shame if this was the only world available.
Fully immersive virtual reality gaming allows Britta to enter a fantasy world where she can be whoever she wants to be. She can be tall, she can be thin, she can be beautiful. So she decides to be a gnome — short, hairy and plump. She's never looked for other people's approval before, she certainly isn't going to start now.
Bitter is an ongoing slice-of-life story about a girl who finds her life isn't what she wanted, so she gets another one.
Also available as a daily online serial on MoodyLit.com. This book collects the first one hundred chapters in an edited form.
It's a standard game, no "stuck in vr", no "portal fiction", just a real game in beta, but it does something fresh with this that a lot of other books attempt and don't succeed: it shows the rough edges of scripted NPCs while making you care about both the protagonist and the embedded AI who finds a soulmate in this young and awkward player.
The book is a webfic so I continued reading on the web not realizing other volumes were already published and available.
The story continues strong for what I'm going to guess is a volume or two before becoming a bit more strained. I'm not sure if the book versions mirror this or are edited and revised. Even strained, the storyline is generally better than a lot of the other writing in this arena. Of particular note is the healthy and realistic family, with supportive but flawed parents. The mother necessarily takes a back seat as she is not a gamer but is a welcome counter to the father. The father not only grows closer but also shows through his actions that he's a much more caring, involved, and deliberate parent than the child might see him.
The style is different. I liked it and yet somehow it rubbed me funny almost not quite the wrong way but differently.
I am curious about what happens next and yet, I didn't feel pulled into the book like I do with most stories. I see much potential with where I think this is going but, my mental jury is still hung on it.
Plus side, I don't believe that I sent in more than 1 flag for correction which is bonus.
Maybe I am not the target audience but I like the genre, so it's a hesitation for me. Maybe if you're a teenaged gamer gjrl you might relate better.
Very good story, though I have no idea why it ended where it did. I know it's a collection of daily bits of the story, but ending it in the middle of a scene just makes no sense. When you collect these things into a stand-alone book, at least attempt to complete the current scene before chopping it off and moving on to the next one. Cliff hangers are fine, but to stop in the middle of an idea is just silly. Otherwise, it was a pretty good story, and I think I'll go on to read the next one in the series, I'd like to see where this one goes.
Young girl sneaks into her nerd daddys pod to emerge in a Virtual MMOPG only when she enters the world the npcs act different and she triggeres several new story lines. The company behind the game want her to play more to find out more about that strange behaviour. The other player are mostly jerks. It is easy to symphatize with the MC. Her nerdy father is a joy to read. :) Slice of life story but with an intriguing background story arc so far.
The first two-thirds of this book was underwhelming. If I hadn't read and loved Moody's other series, I'd have given up. But then the turning point came and we learn how Britta is special in game. From that point on, my interest was peaked.
I'm not sure if I'll continue with the series... Probably?
Enjoyed the story enjoyed the characters it's an interesting storyline and I would enjoy reading the rest of this series. Unfortunately none of the books beyond book one are available on Kindle unlimited so I will be forgoing that pleasure and hopefully if I check back in the future the author will have chosen to make them available.
I liked the style of writting, I also liked the way the MC had to deal with school and parents. I found the game a little flat and in need of more depth. Many of the other characters seemed a little 2D. Worth a read.
