Mothman: Evil Incarnate

Rate this book
“Loren Coleman has taken a hard look at one of America’s most haunting monsters and discovered that it’s more terrifying than we ever knew. Read this book now—before it’s too late. You’ve been warned.” —Richard Hatem, screenwriter, The Mothman Prophecies Evil Incarnate, by cryptozoologist Loren Coleman, is a brand new companion title to the late John Keel’s The Mothman Prophecies (1975), which investigated the sightings of a winged creature called Mothman and became popularized in the 2002 movie of the same name starring Richard Gere. With new material by Loren Coleman, extensive annotations on each chapter of The Mothman Prophecies , a detailed Mothman death list, and a gallery of images, Mothman : Evil Incarnate comprises the most up-to-date information on Mothman phenomena. In addition to providing context to John Keel’s cult classic, Coleman expands on missing details from the movie, explores the deaths that followed the West Virginia incident, describes the recent Chicago Mothman sightings, and delves into the life of John Keel. This companion book should find its place on every Mothman aficionado and cryptozoology fan’s bookshelf. The mystery continues… LOREN COLEMAN is one of the world's leading crypozoologists. In 1960 he started his fieldwork, and after years pursuing cryptozoological mysteries, he began writing. He is the author of numerous books on cryptozoology, including The True Story of Apes in America and Mothman and Other Curious Encounters . Coleman is the founder and director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine (www.cryptozoologymuseum.com). Loren Coleman can be followed on Twitter at @CryptoLoren and on his blog, www.cryptozoonews.com.

The book is really 53-pages long, and is mostly about other books and documentaries on Mothman, followed by about 120 pages of appendices. It's a useful resource if you're looking to find out more about Mothman, but doesn't make a great book.

In my estimation I can divide the book into three categories of info.
15% Engaging info.
10% Useless info ("name game" section in particular)
75% Googleable info.

Definitely disappointed, as I loved the author's Bigfoot book.

This is a must-have if you are interested in cryptozoology or the mothman. I went to college near Gallipolis, OH, which is just across the bridge from Point Pleasant, WV where the mothman appearances occurred. I have always been interested in the story, and Loren Coleman who is without a doubt the country's top cryptozoologist delivers an in-depth look at the legend. With new material that compliments the title written by John Keel in the 1970s. This is information that provides a never before seen deep look at the legend.

MOTHMAN: EVIL INCARNATE is the best-written, most comprehensive, most clear-eyed information about the legendary Mothman you can find in any book or online. It's a must-read for people who are interested in cryptozoology lore in general and for fans of THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES book or movie in particular. Since I'm a huge fan of Loren Coleman, I bought a signed copy of the book directly from his International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine, which makes it even more special to me.

More 2.5 than 3. I really wanted to like this book, honestly. When I saw the book length, I expected a longer book and not just pages and pages of appendices with very little actual "companion" material. Most of the information wasn't really that interesting, though I can at least appreciate the sentiment behind it. There's just not enough bang for your buck, 13 dollars cover price. I understand it's a small publisher, and that can drive up the price, and if you're really into mothman and would really love to read the death list that makes the bulk of the book, go right ahead. It's just not my cup of tea.

Fantastic Supplement to Keel’s “The Mothman Prophecies”

Coleman gives very valuable historical pearls regarding the Mothman phenomenon of Point Pleasant, WV. This book serves as a good modern update on the legend. Coleman demystifies some of the accretions that have formed upon the historical core of Mothman sightings and gives some new information that I had not read before. Michael Winkle’s annotations of John Keel’s “The Mothman Prophecies” is worth the cost of the book by itself! Also Coleman gives the reader plenty of “further reading” recommendations where more information about the Mothman and Cryptozoology in general may be obtained.

Far shorter than I would have liked, though the appendices are appreciated.
