3.75 Very creative take on the issue of depression and loneliness. Depression is given the "form" of a type of parasitic organism that possesses a consciousness of its own and is attracted to people who feel disconnected and have a strong sense of loneliness. People who became the host of this mysterious creature start behaving weirdly and out of their character, and gradually succumb to death. The MC is a hikikomori who has the ability to hear and feel the emotions of every living creatures except for humans. That's why if he suddenly become able to hear a person's feelings then that means te person is "infected". The story is basically about how the MC learnt to engage with the outside world with the help of a public servant who would later become his lover. The reason why the MC became a hikikomori and rejected people from the first place was because nobody understood and believed that he had a special ability anyway, so what's required for him to open up himself was the existence of someone who sincerely listens to him, be patient with him and support him, which was exactly what his lover gave him. The public servant/lover is also a super interesting character. At first I was like what the heck is with this superhuman ideal public servant, but once I got to know his personal background, it then all made sense. There are proper character developments for both characters, which is wonderful. The story takes its time, if you want immediately romance then this one is not for you cuz you'll have to read past half of the book to see a tiny bud of romance between the two characters. But hey I liked it, it felt realistic that way. Just that the people in this story took waaaaayyy too long to realize the parasite is attracted to lonely and alienated people when the MC literally pointed out all the time that the infected people were full of sadness and also what about background check the authority should have done that much earlier rather than waiting until the end of the story lol.
