Take A Knee by USA Today Bestselling & Award Winning Author Xyla Turner

Zora McCoy
I'm done with men, done with anything that looks like a man and just want to live my life.
I'm a woman's basketball semi-pro coach with a dream to make it to the top. One offer from a team owner has me rethinking everything I thought I wanted for my career.
The problem is, we do not fundamentally agree on basic issues. I take a knee at every game and he defended those that deny my core belief.
He needs to leave me alone.
I want nothing to do with a man and especially him.

Harvey Black
They told me I couldn't do it and I showed them. I showed them all.
Why can't I show her?
Zora McCoy, the woman who grates my nerves and makes me want to take her against a wall.
She's smart, loyal and wants NOTHING to do with me.
Yet, when she has my back, I know that she is what I need. When I lose her trust, I also know, it's her that I must have.
By any means necessary.

This IR/BWWM novel is raw, yet sexy and an HEA.

I would like to recommend this book as a great read!
I want to share that I absolutely loved and enjoyed reading this book so much. I love how Xyla Turner tells her stories. The story is around how the couple deal with their issues and how they resolve / overcome the barriers in their relationship. I love that its 99.5% just about the couple and how they dialogue with each other and not lots of narrative about about past relationships etc.

Harvey...hmmmm, that's all I got. Harvey was all ALPHA. He came, he saw, and he took! Zora did not see the mac truck that was Harvey. Harvey knocked down all Zora's walls and made sure that she felt all he had to give. This is a love story of one guy's quest to prove that not all "love"/"relationships" end up the same way...with someone being hurt. He made sure that he came with his A game. When he messed up he made sure to correct it in the most public of ways! If we all had someone like Harvey to fight for love even when the other half of you has a tendency to run, the world would be the thing that fantasies are made of. Xyla Turner did an awesome job of depicting each character in a way that you understood what their hangups were, their motivations and goals that they were working toward. Harvey and Zora's story was not easy but the chemistry and love they shared was very awe inspiring. I can't say enough how I love HARVEY who was alpha all the way, he took what he wanted and gave zero cares about Zora's hangups about relationships.

I didn’t like the MC of this book she was so wishy washy and would change her whole demeanor from page to page. Maybe because I don’t read the synopsis and also didn’t catch the meaning of the title but I didn’t like the climax of the book. As a black woman there is no way you can be in love and want to be with someone that has the views that the hero had. Only positive I can say is I finished it.

"Take A Knee" by Xyla Turner

My Rationalization:

I really enjoyed this story of "Take A Knee" that featured Zora and Havey and would definitely recommend it as a great read. I really liked how this author was able to enlist what was going on with the 'Black Lives Matter Movement '[social awareness aspect] and intermingled it into the read along with tackling the interracial couple issue. It was really interesting seeing how Harvey knew what he wanted and that was Zora was it for him. This relationship may have taken off somewhat rocky but it did grow into some quite 'beautiful and oh so meaningful' showing Zora that he was 'worthy of all of her.' I enjoyed all of the characters that really helped bring to the reader some very well developed and defined people which helped in this well-executed plot. By the end of the story, you have a great read of 'life, love, family and definitely standing up for what one believes in.'

Romance, politics and sports

Enjoyed this story because not only was it about falling in love, it also provided a glimpse of women's basketball. Harvey saw Dora and knew she was the woman for him. The take a Knee aspect played a crucial part in the couple's relationship. Would have liked to see a little more of that part but still five star read

Xyla Turner, Take a Knee
The story focuses on Zora McCoy, a coach of a semi-pro basketball team and Harvey Black, an owner of a semi-pro Basketball team. I liked how we were able to see a little bit of league operations in the book.
Zora had some bad experiences with Men, but was just too uptight for her own good in relation to Men. Harvey Black was a man who didn’t take no for an answer and knew Zora was who he wanted from their first meeting. He knew she was hiding behind her hard exterior.

Harvey came on a bit strong in the beginning. At the end of the day, he was type A personality and could see the connection between the two of them that Zora tried to ignore. They were both very passionate about their careers and that passion definitely carried over to the bedroom. They got physical pretty quickly. Harvey Black knew what he wanted, and he wanted Zora for keeps.

The conflict in the book came straight out todays headlines. It was written in a way where the reader could definitely understand each view point and where each of them was coming from. This added another layer to the book that made it more interesting, especially with them being an interracial couple. They both stood their ground, but eventually were able to see the other viewpoint. This was my first read by the Author and I will definitely follow her work. Overall, I would recommend this book for someone who expects plenty of hot and steamy scenes combined with a great story line with some substance. I really enjoy reading this book. I read about these two main characters, in other books and was very curious about how they got together.

I fell in love with Harvey and how he was deeply in love with his wife, Zora, and I just couldn't wait to get my hands on there book. And to my greatest enjoyment, I loved them even harder. I love the fact that this book talks about real things that happen in the world.

The whole take the knee movement in the NFL really did take Americans by a storm, and there was many that did not stand by it. And there was some that stood by the meaning of what they were doing. I've seen a lot of disputes and people not wanting to be around one another because they either didn't understand quite what the movement is about. Or felt that the movement was a straight disrespect to those who has lost there lives.

I was surprise that this couple also had a dispute by it, but was extremely happy that they manage to find their happy ending.

I very much enjoy the fact that Harvey knew what he wanted, went after what he wanted and got what he wanted. lol He is a man that is going to make sure he gets what he wants and anyone that steps in his way, better be well prepare to be trample over.

I love the fact that when he was so worried about her, he pull all stops not getting any sleep. I love the fact that when she got mad at him and told him that she doesn't have to tell him anything and to mind his business. He told her that she is his business, and that they're in a relationship, so anything that concerns her is his concern as well. That he will make sure that he protectors her and defend her, and be there for her because that's a relationship. And then once she realize how wrong she was threw down her sword and apologies.

I love this scene because a lot of scenes that is similar to this always have the female walking off. Always have the males continuing to chase after them and etc. And that's exhausting to read all the time, it makes you question, if there's ever going to be a time when the female will apologize and own up to the fact that she messed up. And if the shoe was on the other foot, they wouldn't be hearing anyone tell her that whatever her man is doing or feeling is not her concern.

So for this I want to give a huge Cheer to Xyla Turner for having Zora see the wrong she done and actually say she was wrong. This to me makes her more of a stronger female character to me, because it takes a lot to admit your wrong. Esp to the person your dating, you never want to be wrong, and usually rather have the other person say they're wrong. lol

I truly enjoy this book, and look forward to reading more of Xyla Turner other books.,

0nce again xyla turner makes me question my life choices.

i know she likes to write books about black women with common sense politics and the dumb ass white men they for some reason fall for but this book took too damn long to get to the take a knee issue! also this book would've def benefitted from some heavy editing and help with making certain parts of the book less awkward. many times very common things were explained like they were niche topics. we all know what the nba is, come on now.

when harvey and i already forgot homegirls name argued about taking a knee it was so dry and sounded like a summary of what those on the right side of history and racists use as arguments. and then harvey's big gesture was doing research?? like his old ass shoulda already had knowledge on racism in america so that rang false and made me dislike harvey more than i already did for his he man must club woman and drag back to cave antics.

i skimmed majority of book tryna get to the damn main problem and then it was barely addressed! also, let the heroine be prickly for entirety of book 2020! she started the book independent and then lost her damn mind when she was forcibly kissed? A N N O Y I N G

I freakin' loved this book! First any character by the name of Zora has my attention, but Zora McCoy was a boss! This took me back to my college days playing ball and I loved every minute of it.

Zora was an awesome women's basketball coach in the semi- pro league. She cracked me up with her "uniform" of black pant suits. There are a few coaches that share her sentiment.

I really fell in love with Harvey Black! At first I was like, this man is annoying, but when he kissed Zora for the first time, I melted right along with her. Talk about one powerful Alpha Male. He had me sweating with his antics. Like Zora, I couldn't get enough of him.

I loved the way the author took what is happening in today's society with the Black Lives Matter Movement and intermingled it into her book. I was proud that Zora kneeled during the anthem. I was also very shocked at Harvey's initial stand. I don't know if my reaction would have been as severe as Zora's though, especially without having a real conversation sans emotions.

I live for a HEA and I am glad to say this one was awesome. I won't ruin it for other readers, but I like Harvey's plan and how it worked out in the end.

Love and Basketball on steroids!

I’m a fan of Xyla Turner and I loved this couple. As a former basketball player in high school and college, this story brought back so many awesome memories of my days in the paint (I was the Center). Although when I played there weren’t any Pro or even a Semi Pro women’s teams in the U.S. This book gives a glimpse of the world of women’s sport and the assumptions made about female athletes.
This white hot sexy love story of Harvey Black and Zora McCoy is off the charts! Harvey with his turbocharged alpha personality is no match for former Pro basketball player turned coach Zora. When he sets his sights on claiming her, he barrels into her life like a bull in a China shop, determined to win her heart. With Harvey’s in your face approach of making his intentions known, Zora slowly let her walls down and let Harvey sweep her off her feet; like she really had a choice! LOL!

I stumbled across this book by complete accident and can say that I am now a new fan of Xyla Turner.
I'm not going to give away any spoilers so if that's what you're looking for move along.
This book didn't exceed any expectations because I didn't have any. Although, I will say that, this is not like any other "sports romance" that you will come across. I enjoyed how the author blended real life politics into the storyline. I'm also going to applaud her for educating me on a point of view and belief being presented in her book that I have never come across. She also had the guts to dive into a very controversial political view that had our country in a tug of war over what is right and wrong. I do not come across many books that cover our present time politics and that is what made this book great to me.
The storyline is unique and something that I've never come across before. I'll definitely recommend it to anyone that comes across this review. So buy it, read it and review it!

Love conquers all!

Regardless of the philosophical difference that Zora and Harvey found themselves in, they managed to not lose sight of what was really important and that was their love for each other.

Harvey Black knew that he wanted Zora McCoy in his life not only as his lover but his life partner and career partner. He just had to break through her iron core of self imposed celibacy and stubbornness. She had ethics personified and she was the kind of woman Harvey wanted in his life and he was going to make sure all of her goals for her coaching career comes through....and that is what he did.

Xyla explained the core ideology of the "Take A Knee" phenomenon. She wrote about both sides of the opinions where anyone can understand it.

Harvey, Harvey, Harvey!!!!!!!!

Alpha, dominant, stubborn, and freaking sexy! This book had me seeing something different. Many authors attempt to touch on current topics and issues. But they shy away from it for fear of not being politically correct and refusing to tackling it head on. You not only touched on it but had Zora grab it by the horns and wrestle it out with Harvey. And you stayed FREAKING TRUE TO HIS CHARACTER! No quick fix and they were back together. Even though the story was strongly coming from his POV, you had her remain strong and continued to gain strength because of who she was before he set his sights on her.
This was good. It was better than good! Ladies do yourself a favor and pick this one up!

Interesting that this book is called take a knee when really it doesn't seem to feature in this book very much until the end.

I support the whole kneeling thing not that anyone has asked but I think it matters and there is a reason people feel like they're not protected and actually are in danger from the authorities that should be helping to protect us. End.

I like Harvey and they're passion and romance between each other. I love how hot and heavy they are with each other and I love the romance that he gives her and his determination to win her. I don't like the almost instant love, I get they're made for each other but not how quickly it happened and how quickly she fell for him and gave in? I still enjoyed this.

Solid book

I would like to emphasise the good things before anything bad, so I will start by saying that the premise of this book is good and the writer's style is excellent and was what kept me reading right to the end.
Now for the bad. This book needs a really good editor, there were dozens and dozens of mistakes which annoyed me no end, and did almost distract from a really very good story. It is truly a testament to just how good I think the style of this author is, because despite these mistakes I continued reading to the end, and I still have this book 3 stars. It would have been an easy 5 stars for Xyla if there weren't quite so many errors. Please please Xyla, get an editor.

Great read

I really enjoyed this book. Mr Black was right up my alley. I find a determined man very attractive. He really had some great lines. I like Zora too. I enjoyed the fact that she was a mature and professional woman. She didn’t need someone else to validate her but after some coaxing was ok to work with her partner. My only issue was her splitting up with the H by phone over a political issue. To carry her maturity all the way, I would have preferred them to have a face to face discussion, where she would explain her point of view and listen to what he had to say. Communication is key in a couple. If after that they couldn’t reach an understanding, then by all means she could decide to move on.

Speechless

Whew. Didn't expect this book to have this impact. To be fair I was interested in Harvey and Zora after their appearances in a couple of Ms. Turners other books. I wanted to know their backstory in case they were referred to again.
I'm glad I took the time to read this. Harvey is so much more than a typical alpha Mmale billionaire who thinks he can have any woman he snaps fingers at and Zora isn't the tough hardwoman afraid to let a man into her life.
This story shows the possibilities that await when you open your heart and let down your guard. Two people who share core values but are willing to try and work together. That's the love affair these two experienced. Kudos to Ms. Turner for another look at life and love!

🥰🥰🥰

Really good story! Remind me a lot of my own life though I am a senior at this point. The struggles with relationships that Zora experience in her younger years are very much like my on, almost identical in fact. As a woman of color with a college degree and a professional career along with high goals set for myself, it wasn’t easy to meet men and have successful relationships. I got married for the first time at the age of 39.
The “ take a knee“movement is very real and very necessary. Having lived through segregation to where we are today and not seeing much change in civil rights of people of color is truly sad.
This story is definitely a worthy read and will hopefully spark people to join the movement.

Take a knee

I love this book, their struggles, their determination and their patience. Thanks for writing about the plight of the black and brown people. I am a veteran, I am also afro-american . This puts me and my family in a predicament because although I I served my country I can be harassed and killed by the people who have sworn to protect me just because of the color of my skin.It is said that until you are in that situation you won't be able to rationalize it . Happy Mr Black did his research just like many of the non brown and black did to understand what it was the movement was about. In all your books I have read so far their is a real life scenario that is addressed. I appreciate you bringing them to life while entertaining .

In love there is a way.

Zora and Harvey are a truth that love and respect don't mean there won't be rough times. I am glad that Zora held to her beliefs because to do differently would have been a lie. For the love to still be strong and for him to really look at what freedom really means made a stronger statement than if he would have caved. If we the truth, and recognize we are all human beings , be respectful and kind then all the ugliness would have no power. We each cannot be in the others place but we can take note and say all injustice needs to stop.
Loved the romance and connection they had.

O-M-G! This book was everything!

I absolutely loved Harvey and Zora! Although their relationship started off rocky, it grew into something beautiful and meaningful. I love how he pushed through her barriers and won her heart. The Take A Knee stance was also implemented in here & I think it was very important to see. Not to mention, the different reactions & emotions tied to it. I must admit Harvey surprised me a great deal in this book. I absolutely adore him. Great job as always, Xyla! A story well written, character development very thorough, a well developed plot, and a HEA always wins me over.

Take a chance

I have to say I started this book back when it first came out and I didn't like the basketball aspect in the beginning so I stopped reading it. I can say now that I was a bad reader. I didn't even get 5% in and I gave up on it. I can also admit I made a mistake. Harvey and Zora are a great couple. She is a coach in the semi pro league and he is an owner. He knows immediately that she is something special and won't stop until she feels the same. Their relationship has it's ups and downs, one very serious down, but in the end they are meant to be. Please give this book a chance it is a great reas

I swear, another book where I found myself! No, I don't coach women's basketball, but some of my personal life matched with the female alpha. Nonetheless, Take A Knee was raw and with hope. Gave you insight of everything going on in the world today, a HEA, and hot sex in the middle. Xyla did it again making me wanting THIS MAN in my life. Mr. Black is all alpha, take charge of what he wants kind of man. A loving straight no chaser type of MAN! Zora, although she's an alpha and can hold her own, showed even an alpha female can take care of her man. I can go on and on. Wonderful book..10 stars if I could. I hated for the book to end.

Thoroughly Enjoyed

The story of Zora and Harvey took on several hot topic debates. For me I felt that their story was well told, Zora's loyalty to the Black Lives Matter issue and Harvey's efforts to understand her side of the issue as well as to become informed of the true nature of it was both astounding and riveting for me. Though they also tackled the interracial couple issue, I love how Harvey knew what he wanted and went for it. I also loved how Zora kept her private life to herself. I highly recommend this book, it gives a good look at love between alphas. Also some super hot love scenes.

He ain't an owner for nothing

This book was so good! First of all, Zora kept up a wall as a defense to guard he heart. But Harley was the wrecking ball to knock those walls down and I love the way he commanded what he wanted and did not let Zora hide. He owned her and showed her that he was worthy of all of her. I love that while Zora was willing to be there and go all in for him, she was firm in what she stood for and even if that meant walking away from a man who could melt her panties with his words, she would. Showing Harley a new view and that love was compromise. He owned her and I loved every single word of it. This is a for sure re-read!!

Play Hard, Work Harder...

Harvey Black , team owner, arrogant playboy, used to getting what he wanted, and was an all out alpha. He wanted Zora, cornered her and basically told her he would do whatever he had to do to get with her whenever he wanted. Well, that didn't go over so great with Ms. Zora. The more she tried to push Harvey away, the more he was drawn to her. After reaching an understanding, feelings quickly developed. Harvey was deeply in love. Zora was deeply in love. Then, along came Colin Kaepernick and taking the knee. On that, they did not agree. And on that, Zora would not bend.
