Jeremy R. Seabrook was an English author and journalist who specialised in social, environmental and development issues. His book The Refuge and the Fortress: Britain and the Flight from Tyranny was longlisted for the Orwell Prize.
It's surprising when you re-read this book how much of the British "angst" is felt. The country has lost its moral way and the stories provided in this book can be truly shocking. They are now a desperate people, desperate for a nice life, desperate for better houses and more solid communities with caring people.
The book is about the labour movement in England, but much of the trouble and nastiness of modern Britain is on full parade in this book. It is truly an ugly story that has just gotten worse. A must read from 1978 about the downfall of this once proud country.
