This is a really good book about finding your soul's purpose and own gifts - and I've read quite a few of these. The author tells us about her own journey and how she came to find her purpose. She does so in a relatable way despite her purpose being rather spiritual.
This book is heavily supported by research, some of which I was familiar with but it was embedded in the book in a useful manner. The author is aware of the impact of trauma and the workings of the unconscious and, therefore, does not advocate the same simplistic solutions you can find in other books. More than spouting spiritual clichés about finding yourself, the author gives us practical exercises at the end, most of which are related to our own personal values. I found this the most interesting part of the book because we are all guided by our own inner compass and it is through aligning with this compass that we can find our own purpose.
I bought this book after watching a YouTube interview with this author, Estelle Gillingham, and was intrigued by her wild, creative, delightful Celtic sensibilities. Her book is actually quite down to earth, and I guess that's the point— seamlessly blending creative, intuitive gifts with the powerful intention to live one's values and ethics. Gillingham points to studies showing that people who live their values with intention, specifically writing them down and considering them daily, are happier and more inclined to be the best version of who they want to be. She also offers free classes, which are simply regular emails with thoughts and suggestions for evolving one's wisdom and fine-tuning one's purpose, and I think that is very grace-filled and generous.
This book should have been called "how to find out your enneagram personality type and live by it". For all the research and reading this author has done, I'm surprised she hasn't stumble upon the enneagram and made it part of her healing modality.
This is a short read but could have been shorter. If you are new to self help, then maybe you won't mind the long intro chapters about how the mind works, but for veterans like me having the subconcious mind explained to me for the millionth time it's tiresome and boring. But is not only these concepts, she repeats herself a lot and takes forever to get to the point, as if she feels she has to over explain out of fear her audience might not "get it". I do have to say, however, that her voice is very compassionate and I did feel that all the repetitivenes came out of place of empathy for people who might truly need the multitude of analogies and case studies, and not a place of patronizing or doubting the readers intelligence.
Like another reviewer said, you could skip the first 70 pages and miss nothing. But the remaining 80 are not that much better, if we consider how many pages are filled with quotes from other authors and excerpts from other books. The practical part is not that practical, and the part that intrigued me the most, the Value's Journal, was under explained and left me wanting.
This author has a very distinc personality type were she values independance above all else (even tho she doesn't mention it) because all her case studies (including her own biography) are all about middle age women getting divorced, quitting their jobs and traveling the world. That's her idea of success and that's fine if that's what she wants for herself, but when she leads others down that path as if that's the only path towards freedom, that worries me. Marriage is not a value to her, otherwise she wouldn't tout as a success that all these women jumped straight into divorce instead of, I don't know, working things out with their spouses first? Also, aparently none of her clients had children and she doesn't mention having children herself, so her ideal success only applies to a limited audience: an audience that's like her or wants to be like her.
In brief, go check out info on the enneagram, and then go check out James Clear's article on Value Journals, and you'll be set.
I did get this book for free on amazon so I'm not complaining, but had I paid for it I would have felt cheated out of my time and money.
Thank you Dr. Estelle Gillingham for authoring this amazing read! This book is fantastic for those on a spiritual quest to find their ultimate purpose, gifts, and power in life! It truly delves deeply into the ways, the whys, and the workings of personal soul development and how to cultivate it. I love the practical advice given in each chapter; there were many sections that resonated and appeared as if it was written specifically and personalized for me, it was uncanny. This is one of those great books where you will be best suited to refer back to it repeatedly rather than just read it one time. You will not be disappointed!♡
This is for people who are on a journey and ready to acknowledge what it is that has been holding them back from their true potential. To be honest I found the first 75 pages absolutely boring. I could not relate or identify with anything Estelle was saying. I did find the end a bit more engaging as it helped me to better meditate and I even bookmarked a few pages to show my sister. Outside of that, I'm pretty sure it was great for those who are on a spiritual journey of the authors magnitude, unfortunately, I'm not quite there yet.
This book is a journey of healing and pain and passion to help bring the reader's mind around their true life values. It was a rollercoaster of love and loss and so much gain in living life according to your own values.
Good book on healing! Some healing or bruises are not your fault there found in your Dna. It’s really insightful on psychology and known facts about healers. Worth the read.
I would highly recommend this book to those young and old that are seeking ways to make their vision/ purpose come alive. Show the world the real you. You are special and so am I!!!
An okay book for this genre. Good in terms of thinking about what your values in life really are and how to align yourself with them. Some parts I skipped over because it was slow and not interesting but overall not too bad.
A very honest and realistic point of view, one's complicity with himself being needed to manage complicity with inner being. Very deep and well presented.
Good Read, inspiring life story. Well written and easy to read. Some simple, fun and easy exercises to do. Interesting to read how she transformed to be her true self.
