Winter Wayne #2

Bone Coven

Rate this book
Accepting my new fate as only half a witch turned out to be much more difficult than I thought it would be, but when a leader of a coven comes to me with a seemingly unsolvable case, everything changes again.

The Green coven is under attack. The children of its leaders are disappearing without a trace and nobody knows how to find them. Witches are losing it and the coven is on the brink of self-destruction. The strangest thing is, the exact same things happened a decade ago, right before the Bone coven broke apart, and I'm not one to believe in coincidences.

Solving this case means making my place in the paranormal world once and for all, and I'm going to use everything I have to get to the bottom of it--even if it means exposing my real magic to the world.

Disappointing

This is the most depressing, negative heroine I’ve ever read, she’s supposed to be a badass and all she does is talk herself down and panic at every little thing, I know we all have our low moments and some self doubt but this is ridiculous.

Audiobook
Narration: Elise Arsenault
Genre: Urban Fantasy (UF), witch-fairy
Narrative: 1st person

Starting a PI firm does not come easy when Winter is a half witch half fairy. I like PI/assassin/detective kind of books. This second book was better than the first one becuse it had less world building and the plot was faster. No romance and not really banter/jokes either but still good.

I’m really enjoying this series our female protagonist Winter is a very strong woman who has now excepted the fact that she’s 1/2 witch & 1/2 fae and by her helping her magical community I think it’s helping at least some of them to become less unkind to a fae.

We heard in book 1 that her family was apart of the ruling council of the bone coven but after a child of each of the leaders were killed and they all started to point fingers and accuse each other the coven split apart.

10 years later and she just got her first PI job working for one of the leaders of the green witches after some of the children of their leaders were taken.

She finds the connections and works alongside a man who lost himself trying to crack the case for the past 10 years as one of the victims was his young niece.

Vampires from book 1 are back for revenge after Winter killed a few of their friends and they end up leading her to the real big bad of the book.

There’s a big fight scene and rescue mission.

Winters Bone coven is put back together and she has a new friend and better relationship with the witches and her landlord but she can’t help but miss the Fae princess from book 1.

The Winter Wayne story continues, and it’s even more exciting than the first one. Someone is kidnapping the children of the Green Coven leaders. Winter is hired by one of the coven leaders to find out who is responsible, and in the course of her investigation, she discovers the same thing happened years before to the Bone Coven and the children were found dead. The resulting disruption caused the Bone Coven to break apart. The Green Coven is headed for the same fate, and Winter believes the Blood Coven will be next.

Lots of excitement and lots of fighting make the second installment of the Winter Wayne series just as good as the first—maybe better. Winter is a believable character—tough, yet with weaknesses and self doubt. The reader will find herself alternating between cheering her on and wanting to shake some sense into her.

Oh, yeah, there’s also a couple of hot guys in the book, too, and that’s always a good thing!

Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Good

I’m enjoying this story, and am curious what happens next. One issue I have with this author’s writing style is that there are several scenes, mostly the fighting scenes, where the actions of the characters aren’t written fully. I write myself, so I can understand why and how the author skips over the action. It’s why beta readers are needed, to tell you when the scenes you wrote, the scenes that make perfect sense to you because you can see them in your mind, are disjointed and messy and not detailed at all. This is very apparent in the fighting scenes of this book. The characters will be walking, then suddenly in the next paragraph it says something like this: And the stick flying through the air would have taken her head off if she hadn’t ducked in time. Where did the stick come from, why was it thrown at her, what is going on? Other than that little issue, I’m enjoying this story.

Winter is dealing with her life after what happened with Julian. She decided to open her own business instead of working with Finn. With her new looks, not many people want to deal with her. Winter and her Aunt are working on their relationship. Winter gets a call from her landlord that she has a client waiting for her. Winter decides to go back home to meet this person, even though she doesn't believe it.
Winter meets with the client, turns out he is the head of a coven. He needs her help finding the children that are going missing from his coven. Winter realizes it sounds like the story her Aunt to her. Winter decides to take the job, her hope is solving both crimes. Winter doesn't realize what she is up against, it will a fight

This was a great read from start to finish. You really dive into what this character is going through plus the action. You will enjoy this book and I highly recommend reading this book/ series

Good

This book begins approximately two months after the first book left off.
Winter has started her own business, but not everyone is enamored with using her services.
When the first case she gets has her working for the green witches, Winter discovers a darker, more dangerous group is behind it all.

As action packed as the first book, this continues the story. The world building is good, the universe intricate and well thought out. The characters are interesting too, several new ones make an appearance alongside the old.
While there is no romance in this book (the love interest is elsewhere) there is some setup for it.
An enjoyable addition to this magical world, this book continues Winter’s story with an enthralling plotline.
If you’re a fan of Urban Fantasy, this world of D. N. Hoxa’s (which spans several different series) is well worth reading.

D.N. Hoxa’s Winter Wayne series is proving to be a total winner for me. It’s heroine, Winter, is the kind of character that starts off great band then keeps getting better. She now knows she part fairy and is putting that more and more into use over the course of this novel. The mystery outlined in the publisher’s blurb is a doozy, and Winter and her cohorts have a great adventure dealing with it. It’s a real pleasure following along, which is why it’s pretty darn easy to highly recommend Bone Coven.

Winter Wayne has quickly become one of my favorite heroines. D.N. Hoxa did not disappoint in the second installment in Winter Wayne's journey. There were battles, beasts, and bad-assery aplenty. In this enstallment, Wayne is tasked with solving an old mystery of the Bone Coven that has returned and is threatening the lives of other young witches. She finds a new ally in Bender, a witty and brave character whom you can't help but love. Wayne rises to all expectations as she faces countless obstacles. Can't wait to find out what happens next.

Being different is a struggle

Winter hoped at the end on the first book to make sweeping changes and help lots of people not just those with money or the right facial features. In this book, we see that she's struggling. Things are a lot harder than she expected but she doesn't give up. She continually had doors shut in her face, sneers said to her face, and she still persevered and saved the day. I am loving this series. It does have a sad note that Winter thinks of Julian all the time.

I read book one and could not wait for book two. It did not disappoint! Book 2 is a mystery adventure. This fairy has a lot of prejudice to overcome, and she does it in style. Look out baddies this fairy is going to kick your butt!
I was a little disappointed with the romance, but I still have hope that Book 3 will fix that.
I love this series. It is a real page-turner.

Ah, what to say about this book other than it's a testament to stubbornness and willpower, Winter is a fairy and she's discriminated against a lot in this book. It's disgusting to me how those supernatural act with her, like for black people in the 60's. Truly dreadful. But some people learn how to look past her physical appearance and the story progress this way.

Bone Coven, the second book of the Winter Wayne series, is an ebook I downloaded from Kindle Unlimited. A very exciting and fast-paced storyline. I love the drama between the covens and the politics and dominance struggles. I enjoy the world-building for this series and i can't wait to start on the next book, Bone Magic.

Winter is not the only one can’t just say no. She’s on the lookout for helping who is behind these kidnappings.
Rescuing her ex from an evil witch. Not what I expected in what turns out to be a complete waste of time with Julian. Continuing to search for the Dragon Blood. Winter always trying spells.

Love this series

This has been a great an unexpected series. No sex which is a nice change of pace but such intense mystery an suspense, mixed with humorous dialogue ban inner monologue. Unique characters and a surprisingly twisted plot

Just...wow

This book dealt a little more intensely with secrets, and ingrained prejudice-and what happens when you look past your internal teachings and see what IS. I enjoyed this book quite a bit.

A quick, enjoyable read for fans of urban fantasy fiction. However, the main characters are shallow, could use more development especially the protagonist. She is largely defined by the fact that she's now half fairy. Additionally, there were many spelling and grammar errors.

Fairy and Witch

Winter was a bone witch until things changed. Now she's also a fairy. Trying to make a place in the world because fairies are disliked. Now things are completely different as she has changed the world.

Good

I really like winter in this book. It seems like she’s finally starting to not get upset because people judge her because she’s a fairy. She seems to start liking the fact that she’s a fairy and a witch and that’s just the way it is if people don’t like it too bad.
