*WINNER OF READERS REVIEW ROOM CHRISTMAS SHORT STORY AWARD 2017*
Krampus is a festive short that tells the story of two brothers, Kramp and Kris who have been placed on opposite sides of Christmas folklore. For one hundred years they've been separated. Now they must come together to save Christmas.
This short story was entered into the Readers Review Room contest in 2017 and won Editors choice. This extended version has been written in support of a charity called 'Shine Bright James' which, in conjunction with CHAS House, assists families of children with life limiting conditions. All profits will go to the charity as well as making people more aware of the condition NKH.
Billy McLaughlin is a 38 year old writer from Glasgow who has published four novels in the crime genre.
The first is Invisible, a novelette about a woman who hides the true nature of her private life from a colleague that she's befriended. However, he delves in further under the belief that he can help her with horrible consequences.
The second of his books, and the first in the DI Morris series, tells the story of a young woman who has lost her way and ends up on the streets. As her life continues to break under the rubble, she finds herself at the heart of a murder where she's the obvious suspect.
In the Wake of Death picks up six months after the events of Lost Girl where DI Morris is caught up in a mystery of a more personal nature. When Marc Adams, the brother of an old flame, is left for dead it is up to Morris to get to the bottom of the crime. However, something darker lies beneath the surface.
In March 2017 McLaughlin released The Dead of Winter, a 40k crime novella that tells the story of two missing children, one a baby and one the teenager next door. The ugly truth of a middle class community on the edge of Glasgow reveals how these people react to the crime and how they'll protect their own at any cost.
McLaughlin is working on the third DI Morris book The Daughter which will see a 2017 release.
Kramp is the dark part of Christmas yet inherently good, he is called back to his brother Kris who has lost faith in humanity and Christmas due to peoples selfish wishes for themselves instead of goodwill to all. The brothers work together to bring magic back to Christmas with just one caring wish for a young boy and his family suffering grief and needing each other.
A great, feel-good short story for Christmas. I was drawn in from the first paragraph, and enjoyed it right to the end. A heartwarming read that brings back the true meaning of Christmas, I highly recommend it.

This is a telling of the story of Krampus, a brother to Santa Claus, who, according to legend, punishes naughty children at Christmas. He’s got goat horns and claws and is altogether repulsive. This story shows another side to the legend. Santa is losing his self-belief. Krampus is called home and the upshot is that your looks don’t define you and there are still people who wish for the good of others, not just themselves. A really nice little story to get you in the mood for a season of goodwill.
All my reviews can be found at: http://jessicasreadingroom.com ~~~~~ This review will post on my site on December 5, 2019- which is Krampusnacht, also known as Krampus Night.... ~~~~ According to folklore, on the evening of December 5, Krampus tags along with St. Nicholas. He visits houses all night with his saintly pal. While St. Nick is on hand to put candy in the shoes of good kids and birch twigs in the shoes of the bad, Krampus' particular specialty is punishing naughty children. Legend has it that throughout the Christmas season, misbehaved kids are beaten with birch branches or can disappear, stuffed into Krampus' sack and hauled off to his lair to be tortured or eaten.
Billy McLaughlin’s take on Krampus is a bit different from the original folktale. Instead of being evil, Kramp is innately good and comes to be with his brother Kris who has lost his faith in humanity. Kramp must show Kris that not all hope is lost with humanity in the form of a little boy and his Christmas wish.
This is a pleasant little Christmas story that needs to be read by all!
