Rough Riders #14

Gone Country

Rate this book
She’s a little bit country, and he’s…not.

Arizona businessman and long-lost McKay love child Gavin Daniels has been awarded sole custody of his teenage daughter Sierra for one year. In order to steer Sierra back on track after a brush with the law, he pulls up stakes and heads to Wyoming, looking for support from his ranching family...even if he isn’t sure where they fit in the McKay dynamic. He’s prepared for every contingency with the move: the less-than-enthusiastic response from his daughter, learning to run his corporation remotely, but he’s thrown for a loop when his new housemate, Rielle, is a whole lot sexier, funnier and sassier than he remembered.

Rielle Wetzler has finally overcome the stigma of having hippie parents and being a young single mother. In the two years since she sold her ailing B&B to Gavin Daniels, she’s become financially stable running the homespun businesses she loves. But now Gavin is in Sundance to claim the house that’s rightfully his. Although Rielle knew this day would come, she isn’t prepared to leave the home she built for herself and her now-grown daughter. And to further complicate matters, her long-dormant libido is definitely not ready to live with this newly buff Gavin—who isn’t a cowboy, but has the take-charge attitude to prove he’s all McKay.

Sharing a roof, their troubles and their triumphs is too much temptation, and before long, Gavin and Rielle are sharing a bed. But sharing their hearts and lives forever? That’s a whole ’nother ball of wax.

Warning: Contains a feisty, independent heroine who doesn’t need a man to take care of her needs outside the bedroom and a sweet, sexy and bossy hero who’s up to the challenge of proving her wrong

His name may be Gavin Daniels.. but HAWT DAMN he is ALLLLLL MCKAY!

THE STORY

Gavin has won sole custody of his daughter Sierra for a year, after his ex-wife decides to up and leave to Paris with her new boy toy.
Sierra gets herself into a bit of trouble with the law and Gavin decides it’s time to move to Wyoming.

We have learnt In the last few books, Gavin is the eldest son of Vi and Charlie that was adopted out without anyone knowing about him.

He bought the land that everyone wanted off Rielle.

She has been living there waiting for Chet and Remy West to start construction on her own house.
She also runs all her businesses from the house (Rielle was the crazy hippie neighbour in Ben and Ainsley’s book)

So when Gavin and Sierra move back into “her” house.
Basically, It’s weird.

Gavin has been to the house before while Rielle lived in it, but they never had much to do with each other.

Now that he has moved in he noticed her new haircut, her amazing arms, perky tits great ass.

Rielle is noticing that Gavin has shed some weight, shaved his head and gained a whole lot of muscle!

But can it work between a greenhorn McKay and a self sufficient hippie?

Who have both dedicated their lives to their only children?
They come from 2 different worlds. He’s rich and she’s not. He’s city and she’s not.

Or do all they have is undeniable sexual chemistry?

SECONDARY STORY

We also get to read Sierra’s POV. About a 16 yr old moving from Arizona to Wyoming.
Making new friends, or lack there of.. Trying to fit in, getting to know all the other McKay’s (the bus scene made me LOL!)

Best thing about it? We get a 2-4-1 love story!

While Gavin and Rielle are getting down and dirty.

Sierra has it bad for the super hot, older not related Boone West!
They become close friends through a horrible accident.

In typical LJ style we get a little bit of everyone in this book!
Gavin holds a party and all the McKay’s rock up including the 1 billion kids (funny stuff!)
( I also found this I had to refer too for who's kid was who!) http://loreleijamesmckaywest.tribalpa...

Keely and Jack get caught in the act at the party

More babies are had

More pregnancies are announced

Tell and Georgia got hitched.. IN VEGAS BABY!!

Something going on with Rielle’s daughter Rory and Dalton? (or has that happened and I can’t remember it?)

New land deals being played.

Gavin learning to be part of the crazy McKay/West family, and learning to forgive Vi for what she did.

MY HONEST OPINION

FUCKING LOVED IT!

Gavin - -
I loved that Gavin wasn’t a crazy McKay who screwed everything, drank too much and was known as a player. It was kinda funny/sweet when Ben for sex advice. Thinking he didn’t know what he was doing. Reading self help books.
But when he was with Rielle, he just knew what to do.
Always the businessman with him he thought things through and he went into the thing headstrong and knowing what he wanted, not a good time along time.
As I said above he may be a Daniels but he is most definitely McKay!
I loved how he some private time with each of his family members and is slowly becoming a part of it.

Rielle-
She wasn’t my favorite heroine, or my 2nd favorite or 3rd of 4th or 5th etc. Actually she’s prob last TBH. but I learned to like her. She didn’t want to rely on anyone and had had a hard life before Gavin and Sierra moved in. I’m glad she came around and starting to give Gavin what he needed/wanted. I have never been in the position she was in so I really can’t judge but not once did Gavin ever give her reason to doubt what they had and she just kept trying to push him away and it pissed me off.

Sierra –
SPOILT BRAT! But I ended up really liking her. Yea she made some shitty choices but what teenager doesn’t! I liked being in her head, and getting all the McKay family history and being there for her crush on Boone.
But at one point I WANTED TO BEAT HER IN THE HEAD WITH A BASEBALL BAT!
Photobucket
(You will know what I mean when you have read it!)

It was like a SMUT VS. YA read and I love those 2 genres!

I loved how we were told what’s going on with everyone else since we last left them.

Who am I kidding I loved the whole freaking thing!
The first time they had sex?!
Photobucket

Ovaries gone…

BUT
It took me 3 days to read… Which is weird for me! I smash the Rough Riders in 1 day, day and a half max! so am giving it 4 stars for now, until figure out why

Ok so dear Lorelei,
I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT BOONE TO COME HOME AND BE OK AND THEN THEY GET MARRIED AND HAVE 10 BILLION MCKAY/WEST KIDS! THERE IS REALLY ONLY DALTON NEXT SO THE OTHER BOOK WILL BE BOONE RIGHT? … RIGHT??
PLEASE LJ! PLEASE!

The hardest reviews for me to write are for the books I absolutely adored. And I absolutely adored this one! So this review might be all over the place...

I'll confess, after reading the last couple of Rough Riders books, I didn't exactly have high hopes for this one. While mostly good (but not great) I was starting to feel that maybe the Rough Riders series had run its course, and that the Black Top Cowboys series was going to eclipse it. But hold on now, I think Lorelei James is back in the game with this one, because it just about knocked me out!

A couple of things made it different for me. First, the H/h were older. Gavin Daniels (the long lost McKay son who was given up for adoption at birth) was 43; the heroine, Rielle Wetzler, was 40-ish. Both were single parents. Both established, self-sufficient, and independent. And maybe a little set in their ways. And get this (this is a first for a McKay book, I think)--both were a little sexually inexperienced. I couldn't believe it--a McKay who wasn't actually a stud! I mean, the guy had been overweight, undersexed (some testosterone shots took care of that) and suffered from high blood pressure. Of course in this book he had lost 30 pounds and his libido was back on track but still he was a little unsure of his sexual game.

Gavin...
 photo 37999190575422787_QjfFJTF4_b_zps0e1298d3.jpg

And then you had Rielle. She had appeared in a previous book and she came across as sort of an earth-mother type, not glam at all. Of course in this book she gets a bit of a makeover but at least the hero was attracted to her before all that. I really loved and respected this character. She was a tireless worker who for years had never put herself first. I so soooo wanted her to get a HEA...

Rielle...

 photo rielle_zpsff063c8f.jpg

So you had sort of atypical H/h right off the bat. And although Gavin was a McKay by birth, and had recently moved to Wyoming with his teenaged daughter, he wasn't a cowboy at all. He was a millionaire real estate developer. And he was about to move in to the house he bought from Rielle, although he allowed her to continue to live there (at least temporarily). Sparks started flying between the two of them almost immediately, and I thought "oh boy, this is going to be good, because neither had been with the opposite sex in quite a while--I wonder when/if/how it will happen between them?"

Yes, this one had me engrossed from the start. I couldn't stop turning the pages. Rielle and Gavin were pure magic together. And don't think for one minute that 40-year olds can't be hot, because these two...smokin'! Once Gavin let his inner-McKay loose, he was quite the insatiable stud. Wowza!

Now, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the couple who nearly stole the show. And that would be Gavin's 16-year old daughter, Sierra, and 19-year-old (future stud) Boone West. Wow, I never ever thought I'd enjoy a YA story so much, but these two had me mesmerized. Just totally awesome how Ms. James nailed the character of Sierra. Just spot on. These two just about broke my heart at the end, and brought me to tears. I know there's a book for them in the works, and they'll be a lot older and I'm sure they'll have gone through some hard times, but I can't wait until LJ brings them back together. Never have I looked forward to a story for a character(s) as much as I am for them!

Everything was done right in this book. The characters were a bit unique, the story was engrossing. All the little details that fill out a story were superb. The supporting characters and their relationships to the H/h (I especially liked reading about Gavin's struggle to connect with his birth mother, Vi; and Gavin's relationship
with his teenage daughter Sierra. They had many ups and downs but Gavin was one devoted dad.) I enjoyed reading about how Rielle manged to carve out a living for herself--very interesting stuff. And her somewhat complex relationship with her adult daughter (and daughter's animosity towards the McKays. More of that to come in a future book, I'm sure.)

And oh yes, the sex scenes. Wow. I thought Gavin was going to be a dud in the bedroom...but have no fear, he's a fast learner (maybe due to the sex manuals he read?), and had no trouble rockin' Rielle's world. And vice versa. I'm thinking of that scene with the bottle of honey...

 photo a04754db-0099-407c-8973-31c8c817d39a_zps2bd038be.jpg

I gotta admit, this one rocked my little reading world. I was thoroughly caught up in it, and shed some serious tears over the last few chapters. It was near perfection--if only there was an epilogue! I'm hoping I haven't read the last about Rielle and Gavin--I was looking forward to reading all about . 5 big stars to one of my favorites of the whole series!

5 Stars for Gone Country: Rough Riders, Book 14 (audiobook) by Lorelei James read by Rebecca Estrella.

I really enjoy this series. I love how the author comes up with new family members to write about. Gavin Daniels, the main character this time was given up for adoption as a baby and has recently learned about his biological family in Wyoming. He and his daughter move to be close to them from Phoenix. As Gavin and his daughter are settling in they both strike up friendships that might lead to more.

I wish more of the book was set in Phoenix. I love it when the action is happening in my hometown.

Slick's review posted on Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

5++++ Stars

This is probably the hardest review I’ve ever had to write because this is a huge release into a wildly popular series and it’s about someone who until two years ago didn’t even know he had this crazy, huge, but loving family. It’s hard because we are nearing the end of this series and because of that I read this book with a different eye and had such a difficult time not crying through the whole thing. It’s hard because I want to make sure my thoughts are coherent enough to give this book the justice it deserves and it deserves a lot. While I’ve always been vocal about my favorite McKay man and couples, and those haven’t changed with this story, this book is probably my favorite overall book in this series. This is the longest book in the series to date and it by far has the most complex plot, yet I still finished it and was ready for more. Don’t get me wrong, it has a very satisfying ending but as always Lorelei leaves me wanting more and that my friends is the mark of one of the best authors out there. Even my husband who has enjoyed every one of Lorelei’s Rough Riders books and everything she’s written as Lori Armstrong commented that he appreciates the details and character development she puts in every story. Something he believes is lacking more often than not in books these days. Gone Country steps beyond the norm in a Rough Rider book, this story is about relationships of many different kinds and it was easy to read this book and reflect back on the entire series. Seeing the McKay family from “outsider” eyes, is interesting, hysterical, heartwarming, heart breaking, and cathartic. I loved every minute of it and despite knowing there are two more books to go, I’m at peace with this part of the series coming to a close because I feel like the missing pieces to the McKay family puzzle are in place; Gavin and Sierra are where they have always been meant to be; in the bosom of the McKay family.

Gavin Daniels has fascinated me since he first appeared on the scene in Chasin’ Eight. I will admit though at first I worried about what this outsider might do to shake up the McKay family and their ranching empire. I’m highly protective of the McKay family so I didn’t trust Gavin, I found myself worrying what this could mean for everyone involved. But when he flew to Wyoming for the “intervention” with Ben in Cowboy Casanova, I decided right there and then Gavin was a stand up guy. In this book he proves over and over what a stand up guy he is and while he has his moments where I threw up my hands and shouted “quit acting like a typical McKay.” It dawned on me that despite being raised in a totally different environment, the whole nature versus nurture argument comes into play because when he’s mad or upset, he takes on the pissy man McKay attitude and says things that are totally out of character for him. However, he’s generous to a fault, he’s a fantastic father (despite making some mistakes), he a caring lover, and he’s really trying to be a brother, son, nephew, uncle, and cousin to people he didn’t even know existed two years ago. I honestly can’t imagine all the issues he’s dealing with and there are some pretty wonderful moments in this book as he works through all the changes in his life.

I admire Rielle Wetzler for the choices she’s made in her life. She works hard and despite some financial troubles in the past, she’s a smart business woman. When she first appeared on the scene, I didn’t like her much but that had more to do with the fact that she was kind of mean to Ainsley. Once I realized her motivations for that though, I forgave her and it’s been interesting uncovering the layers of this complex woman. I really love the parallel lines between Rielle and Vi (Gavin’s birth mom). I also applaud her for raising her daughter on her own despite the odds and making sure her daughter had the best upbringing she could provide no matter how hard she had to work for it. I will forever be grateful for the way she embraced both Gavin and Sierra and how she always listened to them without meddling. I’m not sure there are many women who would have seen fit to play the role of sounding board without giving her opinion.

Something every interesting in this book is we see part of it from Sierra’s eyes. As a 16 year old girl who was moved from a big city into the wild of Wyoming, she has some pretty damn insightful moments. There are also a lot of very realistic teenage girl moments that left me shaking my head one minute and thanking the Lord I had a son the next. Everyone thinks Sierra is shallow, spoiled and self centered but we learn there is a lot more depth to this young woman and I can’t help but wonder where life will take her.

We also get to see a lot more of Rielle’s daughter Rory in this book and some of her scenes make me realize that no matter how old children are, they still expect to be the center of your universe. At 24, she’s not happy about her Mom finally getting a life and she doesn’t handle it well. She makes some of Sierra’s outbursts look really minor. I did however enjoy the budding relationship between Rory and Sierra. Rory really stepped up into a big sister role and Sierra was there to remind Rory to take a good, hard look at herself when she was being particularly bitchy.

Throughout this book we get to see Gavin learning to deal with his extended family but also forging bonds with his brothers, and his birth parents. This isn’t always neat and pretty but the scenes will forever hold my heart. Gavin’s reaction to so many of the things he is dealing with is so real that I often found my eyes leaking. We also get to see Sierra finding her place in this huge family and learning about the family’s history. Sierra also experiences a changing crush but I won’t say anymore because I don’t want to spoil it for you.

As you can tell many different kinds of relationships are explored, but this story is about Gavin and Rielle moving from friends to lovers. Once they finally figure out there is no way to ignore the passion that is between them, they move quickly and their intimate scenes are scorching hot. Watching Gavin take the reins in their relationship and them both realizing that it takes the right partner and the right chemistry for great sex, they leave no stone unturned and no surface untouched! While I have loved watching each and every McKay man fall in love, Gavin and Rielle have a very mature relationship that comes from them being at very different places in their lives compared to the previous couples. That’s not to say they are boring, they are far from that, but with 16 and 24 year old children in and out not to mention business to run and extended family nearby they have a lot on their plates.

Every day I thank Lorelei James for opening my eyes and making me realize that just because you are comfortable in your relationship doesn’t mean you can’t spice things up and make it new again. With Gone Country, if she helps one single parent realize that they deserve a life outside of being a parent then in my opinion, her work is done. I can almost guarantee when Lorelei set out to write this series she had no idea what great marriage, sex, and life therapy they would be. But the truth is, they are and Lorelei James is a master at her craft. This book is more than a story about two single parents finding love. Gone Country is the story of people finding their way in this big world, learning to deal with everything life throws at them and then being lucky enough to find that one person that makes them feel like no one else can. It’s truly a masterpiece and while I’ve enjoyed every story in this series, this is without a doubt the best overall story to date and one that I feel will top the bestseller charts and should remain there for a good, long time. Congrats Lorelei on a job well done, consider me overwhelmed and overjoyed. This book is 5 stars only because we don’t have anything higher!

Review posted at: Swept Away By Romance

I've said it before and I'll say it again, LLJ can take the simplest of story's and make them totally WOW me. This book was no different than the rest of the Rough Rider series except the heat level was not as high. In this book we had the hero, Gavin's, 16 year old daughter under foot so it was really hard for Gavin and Rielle ( the heroine ) to just do the humpty pumpty any time they wanted. When they did get it on OH MY, it was VERY HOT indeed. Gavin and Rielle were absolutely perfect for each other. We also got a small side romance from Gavin's daughter Sierra and Boone which had a bitter sweet ending. I so hope that LLJ writes a book for Sierra and Boone, that would also be a MUST read book for me.

All and all this was a fantastic story that kept me interested all the way through. I can say that I REALLY enjoyed it and if your a fan of LLJ's book's I can tell you that THIS book will not disappoint you.

This was a real departure from the typical Rough Riders series. Not nearly as much focus on sexual hijinks and more attention paid to the story.

When I started reading this I had a lot of reservations. The last two books -- three books, really -- were fairly disappointing. It felt like LJ had decided at some point she didn't actually like the McKays all that much and there was this negative undercurrent running through all the books.

I was also nervous about the female lead in this one. Reille Wetzler was introduced in Cowboy Casanova and she was a selfish jerk. Very unlikable. At the beginning of this book she's still pretty unlikable, but she grows. Gavin grows as well, but he also has some scenes where he's kind of a dick. But it made for a successful, slow-growth love story that was believable and sweet. They're also young 40's (in smokin' hot shape, of course) so there's a maturity to it that we don't always see in the other stories in this series.

But that was only half the story. The other half is about Gavin's 16-year-old daughter, Sierra. Why she's a 16-year-old sophomore (at the beginning of the school year) is never explained, but I let that slide. I hate YA, but I actually enjoyed her story quite a bit. Her relationship with Boone West was lovely and, even though she's a spoiled brat at times, she also shows growth.

It looks like Reille's daughter, Rory, is being lined up to be Dalton's HEA, and that bugged me at first. But, again, LJ was able to give this character an arc that led her to be a less annoying and more intriguing presence the more we got to know her.

So, I liked it. Is it like the other Rough Rider books? No. I would almost not categorize this as erotica, but put it in straight romance. Not that there aren't some really nice, hot, love scenes, they just aren't as ... athletic? ... as some in prior books. ;)

This is one of my very favorite books in this series!! My heart is FULL of feels right now. I love a book with dual storylines, and LJ pulled this off beautifully. Gavin, a long lost McKay brother that was given up for adoption, comes back into the McKay family’s life at 40+ years old. He’s divorced, a single dad, and a business tycoon. I loved seeing this side of him because it’s so not your “typical McKay” lifestyle. The only one that comes close to this is Jack, Keely’s husband. Gavin reminded me of him a lot.

Rielle is a single mom that has been taking care of Gavin’s land for the past several years—having a thriving business of her own. I absolutely loved Ri, and could relate to her the most. She was so strong, and such a hard worker. Totally devoted to her daughter, Rory, whom she had at 16..she was used to having a hard life. Throw in a forced proximity situation of sharing a house and land with separate bedrooms, and fighting attraction for each other…yeah, you feel me.

I loved that this was a 40’s romance, and that both characters had insecurities in the bedroom. Gavin having lost 30lbs, and muscled up due to a fit lifestyle—high Blood pressure, and Rielle being inexperienced in the bedroom. She was basically a virgin again. Gavin was self conscious for Ri to see him naked at first because he used to be bigger. This was refreshing to read because it’s something we rarely see men talk about. I love that Gavin read sex books to help him become a beast in bed, but somehow I think that had a lot to do with Rielle, and his physical reaction to her all the time!!

I loved the storyline between Sierra, Gavin’s daughter and Boone West. He made me swoon. I can’t wait to read their book! I’m so sad this series is coming to an end for me, but what a ride it has been! One thing I will always know is that there’s no family like the McKay family. I love them so much!

4.5 stars!

I seriously loved this book. Apart from starting a 14 book series on book 14, it was such an enjoyable read! The series is based in Wyoming around a ranching family, the McKays. This family is huge. Each book is a different family member so when they had a bit of a reunion, I was like, "Um, I'm thinking starting at ground zero would've been less confusing." But anyways.... I can't wait to back the hell up and hear how this clan began.

This is the story of 43 year old divorced, uber hot, goatee styling businessman Gavin Daniels (aka McKay) who moves back to Wyoming with his daughter to provide her a fresh start after a bit of teen dalliance. Gavin was adopted out from Vi and Charlie McKay. The McKay family embraces him with open arms.....and all their craziness. He returns to the home he previously bought (sometime in a precious book I obviously skipped). Rielle has been living in this house, keeping it up and harvesting the land. Although Gavin has met Rielle in years past, things are somehow different and a relationship ensues.

I think what I loved most about the book was the realistic component to it. I myself come from a huge family and this reunion was so true to form when you put multiple generations under one roof at one time. Gavin was a great dad to his 16 year old daughter Sierra and his challenges with her are things that everyday people deal with. It just had such a "I can relate" component to it. I loved the "middle age" love story that ensued between Gavin and Rielle. It also had a bit of a YA sideline when Sierra falls in love with McKay rival Boone West. I would love to see a sequel of them down the road after he "returns." Gavin's relationship with Rielle grew slowly but when things jumped to the more physical level it was HOT. The scenes were expertly drawn out. I cannot commend Ms. James more on her ability to make you fidget during those "scenes." Again, she did a great job of giving us their "story" while respecting the fact that his teen daughter lived under the same roof.

I guess I didn't do myself a favor skipping to the end of this series. It's obviously long but I can see it's one where by the time you get to this book, ya feel like you're a part of the McKay family. So, I'll put it in reverse and see how this craziness began because I sure loved where it ended up........

4 Gone Country Stars

This was interesting, to say the least. I really enjoyed this story, getting a single dad and a single mom and having them see each other as more was really sweet.

Gavin is yummy in all the ways. He is the adoptive son of the McKay’s and has come home from Arizona with his daughter.

Rielle has been living in Gavin’s house for the past 6 years keep it running so when Gavin and his daughter come to town they have to share the house.

That faces everyone with challenges and having a 16-year-old underfoot doesn’t help the relationship. But they make it work.

I liked that we kind of got a side romance of Sierra and Boone West. He is older by 2 years and even though these two have a connection they don’t really act on it. Sierra is having adjustment issues.

I really love that I can pick up a series like this a year or so later and remember how much I loved the books before it and that, that feeling I first had with it is still here.

The narration, as usual, is freaking amazing the narrator knows this series inside and out and you can tell she enjoys it her tones and inflections are spot on.

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

Once again the author of the Rough Riders series delivers. I have a hard time keeping up with all the McKays and West family members but as long as the current story holds my interest, I don't mind. Gavin Daniels is the love child of Charlie and Vi McKay. He moves to Wyoming with his daughter Sierra to try to give her a fresh start and for him to get to know his blood relatives that are as abundant as the stars in the sky. The author did a good job of dealing with the awkwardness that comes with finding out about a family you never knew you had and if and how you will ever fit in with them. Of course there's a love story that develops between Gavin and Rielle so you get the hot, steamy scenes that you expect from a Rough Riders novel. At the end, Gavin has to figure out if he puts his daughter Sierra first and return to Arizona or consider the life he deserves for himself by staying with Rielle. We get resolution but there are plenty of seeds planted to continue more McKay stories in future books.

After Tell’s story, which was a bit younger in tone and totally bad boy McKay, it was a very nice change of pace to read about Gavin. Gavin is the long lost McKay brother. Vi had given him up for adoption without telling anyone that she was pregnant when she was 16. And now after Gavin is 40+, he comes back in their lives. He is a McKay by blood, but so not your typical McKay by actions. He’s divorced, he has a teenage daughter, and he’s bought the ranch next to Ben that used to be owned by Rielle. Now that he wanted to bring their daughter to Wyoming to help her with some behavior issues, he will have to adjust to country living, McKay relatives, and living with Rielle for a while.

Rielle was an amazing and so strong heroine. I have to give her props because she’s devoted her life to her daughter, even after she had gotten pregnant at 16 and being raised by hippie parents in a commune. She has made something of her life with strength and hard work. And she’s always put work and being a mother first. So that means relationships with guys have not been a big priority in her life. It’s hard to believe that, in her forties and with her daughter away to college, she’s just now developing feelings and attraction for the first guy in what could be the first time in her life.

Gavin, on the other hand, was just amazing. In a way he reminded me of Jack (Keely’s husband) and has a lot of the qualities I liked in him. I liked the fact that he comes back to Wyoming slimmer and taking better care of himself. It wasn’t love at first sight with Gavin and Rielle. They’ve both made some changes and now that attraction is blooming. I find that a big part of it was how different Rielle was from Gavin’s ex wife. She might not be the refined woman he is used to deal with, but that’s exactly the type of woman he needs.

Gavin and Rielle as a couple were great. Both had their own insecurities. They had to deal with the issues that single parents have to, even though their kids were not so little. With one living with them, they had to have a certain amount of discretion in their encounters, but they made it work. Still building their relationship in a way that progressed slowly and was very believable, as well as dealing with both their kids and family life. Their chemistry was off the charts! I just wish we would’ve gotten more details on the sex in the office against the windows. *waggles eyebrows* I have to say though, at times I felt Rielle could’ve been more involved and shouldn’t have put so much distance between her and the relationship they were building and the rest of Gavin’s life.

Then there’s the kids. I cannot wait to see what happened between Dalton and Rory. I’m biting my nails in anticipation! Then Sierra, Gavin’s daughter. I really loved her character up until the very last bit of the book. When you read it you will know why at that point I wanted to bash her head against the wall. But, typical teenage behavior I guess. Of course there is Boone West *sigh*. Is it bad to say I have a crush on a teenager? Well, I do! Are we going to get a Sierra and Boone’s story? Pretty please with a cherry on top! I also enjoyed all the McKay interactions and bits and pieces of their family life, as usual.

This book was not like any other McKay…and still ohhhh so good. I think it’s a nice change of pace in the series. Even though it’s bittersweet because we are one book closer to the end. :(

“If it looks like a McKay, acts like a McKay…then it is a McKay.”

“Did you happen to bring a condom with you?”
“Nope. I brought two.”

Gone Country is a bit of a departure from the how the Rough Riders series has felt so far. And I loved it. It was nice to take a step back from the McKay craziness and see it all through a new family member’s eyes. Gavin is the son that was given up for adoption. He’s back in his birth family’s town with his teenage daughter who’s giving him some teenage angst. Gavin hopes the change of scenery, pace and being around family helps Sierra find some stability, especially since her flighty mom is off in France with her latest boyfriend. Gavin moves them back to the home and land he recently purchased and that puts them under the same roof as Rielle. Rielle was having financial problems before Gavin stepped in to buy the home she’s currently living in. She stayed there as the care taker of the property while she ran her numerous businesses. Now that Gavin’s back, he’s not kicking her out, but they do have to find a way to live together, under one roof and try not to let the sparks fly too fast and furious!

Rielle had her daughter when she was very young and has been on her own ever since. She raised Rory on her own, she never dated, never brought men around; Rory was her #1 priority. Now that Rory has moved away to school, Rielle is alone. She’s busy year round whether it’s making honey, tending to her numerous gardens and orchards or baking bread for local companies, she’s always on the go but has never stopped long enough to find romance in her life, until Gavin shows up. He’s attracted to her, she’s attracted to him and while they keep the “divide” between them in the house and their day to day lives, their personal lives start to mix and they are so sexy and sweet together. Sweet in that neither Rielle nor Gavin has had much experience with sex and they both want to please the other person. They worry that they won’t, they worry about not having enough experience or being a letdown in bed, it’s a very endearing quality in them both and made them an even more perfect match.

What I enjoyed most about this story was the more adult/family relationship the entire story took on. I loved that Sierra and Rory both played large roles in book. For a long time, Rielle gave her undivided attention to Rory, and even living away from home, it’s an adjustment for her to see her mom starting to date, really for the first time. Sierra is just a big ball of hormones right now and I loved the father/daughter dynamic that Lorelei James puts out there. The relationship between Gavin and Sierra was interesting throughout, seeing how they both grew and changed. Sierra especially grows up quite a bit and she has a nice side story with Boone West and the start of a potential romance that I can’t wait to see develop a few years down the road in the series.

I enjoyed Gavin so much, he’s a bit like a fish out of water to start, but he finds his place in the McKay family. I loved seeing his relationship with his daughter and the highlight was of course his romance with Rielle. She’s so strong, always working hard to make ends meet and provide for her daughter. For as much as I love those naughty, dirty-sexy McKay men, I now have a soft spot in my heart for Gavin and Rielle. They might not have been on the steamier end of the Rough Riders spectrum, but they’re definitely one of the more romantic couples in the series.

3.5 stars, but let me explain why.

Let me just say this was a good book, but then Ms. James rarely ever disappoints. I have to admit, I am anxious for the future and the book about Boone and Sierra (obviously when they are older). Quite frankly, they were the main reason I stayed interested in the book. As for Gavin and Rielle, well, theirs was a sweet romance, although they are the very reason I didn't give this book more stars.

First of all, at the very beginning, the impression that was given of Rielle was one of an "old" woman, yet further along, it was evident she might not be a young chicken, but she was by far old. I guess I just couldn't get that image out of my head. Rielle was irritating in the fact that I couldn't quite get to the understanding of why she was so hateful when Gavin wanted to do things for her. I could get if she were frustrated and kept it internal, but she got down right angry and I just don't see the realism in that when you are in a romantic relationship with someone. No, maybe she didn't want him to shower her with expensive gifts or to "look" like she wanted him for his money, but seriously? And then I couldn't get a feel for how she really felt about Sierra - for most of the book, it seemed as though she didn't like the girl and then others, she might have. Too much back and forth there, but I think it was so we could get an idea of what Rielle was thinking.

And as for Gavin, I did fall in love with him most of the time. The man was hot and the fact that he came out of his shell, becoming the dominant lover that Rielle needed was SEXY! We all want that man who just can't control himself when it comes to his woman and that was Gavin. On the other hand, I guess being a parent of three, I know better than to let my kids manipulate me the way Sierra did him, however, in the same sense, Gavin hated his ex-wife, yet he allowed his daughter to act just like her?

All in all, this was a good one and I definitely look forward to more books by Lorelei - actually, I stalk the Amazon site to see when her newest ones are coming out, so needless to say, I am forever a fan.

A McKay who DOES NOT show his douchebag moment. WOW. I'm shocked. I chalk it up to the fact that he is older than the rest and has a teenage daughter, hence no time for douchebag moments. Gavin Daniels is seriously awesome and delicious. What a great dad. What a great person. What a great lover! I have to admit that I chuckled hard when I read that he bought a bunch of how-to-be-great-in-bed books and counseled his younger Dom brother Ben for advice on sex, but apparently it paid off. I love this guy. And it was so refreshing to read about a character in this series that doesn't know how to ride a horse, saddle a horse or have to get up every morning to do ranch chores...but has his own little skill set of talents. The story itself is really good. It's just such a different take on this series from the past books...and doesn't fit the RR formula that I have commented on in other reviews. He really embraces life in Wyoming, he really genuinely wants to know everything about Rielle, and yet that bossy macho McKay crap does come out when he is defending his ladies. He knows what he wants and he never wavers from it for a second. And while he is shy in some areas, he doesn't back down from admitting his insecurities, whether that be in the sack, parenting or his physical appearance. I loved it. And now that all the next generation McKays are getting older and growing up...well...there is going to be lots of room for more books. I really want to see a book with Sierra and Boone when they are about six years older. HOT HOT HOT.

"It was ok" perfectly describes this book. I've read every other book in Rough Riders series and I enjoyed each on a different level, and I didn't feel like they got worse or got better in a steady level. Each book had its own merits. But I did find that this particular book was lacking what the previous 13 had. I kept kind of waiting for SOMETHING to happen...but nothing did. There was really no major conflict. And as cliche as it is, I do like that token conflict/issue that you find in romance books - the two characters ALWAYS over come it, but it's still enjoyable to read. I just wanted a bit of drama for sizzle!! The tiny conflict that was present in this book was introduced in one chapter and completely resolved in the next and they went on as if nothing happened.

I also found the writing lacking. The sex scenes were kind of a let down, compared to what James has written before and I didn't feel Gavin and Rielle had that much chemistry and it felt a bit forced at times. I found myself waaay more interested in Sierra and Boone's story (BTW I cringed every time I read that name. JUST WHY LORELEI WHYYY). I hope the next instalment of the series is focused on them though!

I love this series overall but I have to say, this was my least favourite one :\

This story was so different than the others and more of a contemporary romance in my eyes. I love the timeline of her story in months giving you updates of the evolving relationships Gavin and Rielle have gone through and all the other relationships in the story. Love the updates on Keely and Ava. YAY! I hope that Sierra and Boone get a story in the West series. Read this on my trip so it will forever be connected to my first visit to Epcot. LOL

Fourteenth in the Rough Riders romance series. The couple focus is on Gavin Daniels and Rielle Wetzler.

My Take
Although Rough Riders is an erotic romance series, this particular story is more romance---and an older couple romance at that! It was a treat to read a story about fairly normal sex, and the first one in this series to focus on an older couple and their body issues. Although I did appreciate Gavin's practicality in asking Ben for advice about sex, LOL. Nor is he the only one asking for advice…!
"Fake it 'til you make it. Next time you're with Rielle...act like you've got the hot sex moves and she'll believe you've got them."

"...act like you're gonna rock her world in bed and then follow through with it."
It's also family with a lot of growing up for a number of people to do. Gavin and Sierra getting to know his birth parents, their unique difficulties with Sierra's mother, discovering the joys of the holidays with a large family who are in each others' pockets. Cookie decorating, Rocky Mountain oyster feeds, hay wagon rides, cider and cookies, making Christmas ornaments, the fruitcake throwing contest...you'll crack up on this one.

It's also chock-full of honest confrontation whether it's Rielle telling (and asking) Gavin what-for on sharing the house, Sierra dictating her demands, or fighting about sports on TV. And each has to come to his or her own realizations.

It's an eye-opening experience for Gavin; he had no idea Rielle was so business-like. It's also too new for Sierra: having to ride the bus, discovering she's related to most of the town. It's also some great bonding time for Sierra with her dad AND with Rielle as Sierra learns a lot about self-sufficiency and returns that interest by helping Rielle. A move that Rory actually appreciates.

Raised by hippie parents, Rielle is passionate about organic produce and preserving the land, and having a normal life. If you love gardening, organic produce, or simply adore food...you wanna read this one. Just reading what Rielle has planted makes me want a garden...or hit Whole Foods! She talks about dyeing her wools and about roving---and the business end of supplying handdyed wools and to whom and why.
...cranberry orange hazelnut bread...eggnot spiced pumpkin bread...I'm just sayin'...
There's a nice bit in here about Rielle's back history with her parents and how they acquired the land and surprisingly a bit of history on Vi, (and some on Joely too), and James slides it right in without doing an info dump...yeah! Sierra gets some help from Boone with her exploration of the McKay family archives and the West-McKay feud; we get more back info on Carson, Casper, and Calvin as well as how the Wests and McKays work together on their ranches. These McKay brothers' dad, Jed McKay (he'd be the father of Carson, Casper, and Calvin and therefore the current adult generation 's grandad), sounds like a real jerk and it sounds like Jed set it up for Casper to turn into his jerky successor.

I'm impressed with how well Rielle keeps from interfering in Gavin's raising Sierra. I am curious as to what happened with the whole car thing. James started with Gavin getting Sierra a car, dropped it as part of her incentive program, then it felt as though the whole issue was ignored. Sure, there's a bit in here where Rory lays into him, but it doesn't feel connected somehow.

Wow. All kinds of pissy behavior running through this disguised as being annoyed with interference. I like it that Vi calls Gavin on his anger. Sounds like Gavin has not been paying attention to anything outside himself.

It's not just the immediate household that's having problems, though, as Charlie and Vi are chompin' at the bit to spend time with their oldest, but are fearful of crowding him. I do wish James had elucidated on why Rielle and Rory hate the McKays so much. It's a lot more than just Dalton dissin' Rory.

It's a real story. Worries about not being big enough, sexy enough. Teen/daughter angst with the attendant mood swings. I love that James portrays Rielle as caring, giving, and coming to understand that she deserves her own "things", separate from Rory. It would have been more real if there had been more conflict (warfare) between Gavin and Rielle. Just a tiny bit more. Even if I did love how well Rielle kept out of it all. And I am so GLAD that Sierra has Rielle and Rory in her life. Her mother is a piece of work...and she needs some decent role models.

Wow, Boone's situation is drastic. What is with his dad?

As much as I loved this story, as I went over my notes, I came to realize two things: there is one heckuva lot going on and that it also drove me nuts. While I can appreciate Rielle's concerns about paying her own way, does she have to be quite so strict?
Rory makes an excellent point:
"Change yourself not your location."
The Story
Desperate to rein his daughter in, Gavin Daniels has gained sole custody and moved the two of them to Sundance, Wyoming. To the house and land he bought from Rielle in Cowboy Casanova , 12. A move that has Sierra and Rory up in arms, for different reasons.

It's leverage Rory uses to heat up her mom's image leading to unexpected results.

It's a rough ride for the four of them: Gavin and Rielle want each other, but she's prickly and prideful while Sierra is 16 and selfish in it. It's Rory who has the most difficult time with facing up to sharing her mother.

And it only gets rougher with Gavin having some hard choices to make.

The Characters
Since the buyout, organic produce farmer, Rielle Wetzler, has been living at the house as Gavin's caretaker, dragging her feet on building her own place. Sadie is her German shepherd. Rory is the daughter she raised on her own, who is now working on her master's degree and has a graduate assistantship a UWYO. She is totally ticked about Daniels.

Gavin Daniels is the eldest son who's recently reconnected with the mother who gave him up and his father: Vi and Charlie McKay. Sierra is his only child, a wild child. Gavin's mom, Grandma Grace, taught Sierra the basics of cooking since her manipulative, psycho mom, Ellen, didn't have the same idea as the rest of the world about being a mother. Dan was Gavin's adoptive dad. Sounds like a scum bag too.

Ainsley Hamilton is a local bank president and Ben McKay's wife ( Cowboy Casanova ). She and Doc Joely Monroe are friends with Rielle.

Marin Godfrey is the one friend Sierra makes at school and misses her when she takes up with Mitch Michaels. Boone warns Sierra to stay away from Kara and Angie. Dave Darling. Tyler Larkin is a college guy and Kara's brother.

Ky is the first cousin to move in on Sierra followed by Boone West, then Anton McKay, Hayden, Eliza, Liesl, Peyton, Shannie, Gib, Braxton, Miles. And that's just the first bus ride…

Chet and Remy West are part of the far-flung McKay family and in the construction business. One that's so good that Colby and Channing have to wait on their addition as well. Boone works with his uncles when he can; he's also working part-time as an EMT. Dax West is Boone's jerk of a dad, the eldest West.

Tell McKay is hooked up with Georgia, the high school cheerleading coach and PR person. Quinn (and Libby with Adam) McKay, Chase (and Ava), and Ben (and Ainsley) are Gavin's younger brothers. The ones they kept. Vi McKay's dad, Elmore Bennett, was a "man of God" and vicious with it.

Cord shows up for Gavin's party with his kids including the clingy Beau. AJ stayed home as she's too pregnant. Dalton and Brandt and Jessie show with their new baby. Kane and Ginger and Kade and Skylar (she does soap), Colby---Gib is his oldest, and Carson and Carolyn (she's letting Sierra access the family archives). Cam, a sheriff's deputy, and Domini still only have six kids. Carter and Macie have four. Keely and Jack Donohue. Colt and India.

Chassie Glanzer makes great goat cheese.

George Krebs is with the Bracken Investment Group trying to locate Gavin.

The Cover
The cover is one heck of a six-pack with two feminine arms holdin' on.

The title is all about Gavin and Sierra. Moving to Sundance means they've Gone Country.

I wasn't even sure if I wanted to read Gavin's story right away (he didn't wow me) but I saw a few good reviews and ohmigod am I happy that I gave it a chance. Gavin is mature in a way that SO many of the Wild McKay's are not. And Rielle could get on my nerves but that is just HER. They were both so well developed and so well portrayed. They made sense together and their relationship wasn't forced. Their kids are a huge part of their lives and they didn't just get mentions. The daughters were both justified in their involvement throughout the story. I am excited for Rory's story and hope that it is soon. I LOVED the secondary story line with Sierra and I will love to see her continue to grow-up and see what happens with her. Some of the recent RR stories haven't done much to keep me in love with the series but after GONE COUNTRY, I am completely blown away and salivating for more from Sundance. Mrs. James, I apologize for straying and I am firmly back into hysterical fangirl territory.

3.5 star book.

I have to say, I think this was one of the most realistic depictions of a relationship I've read in a while. Divided by months, the book documents the growth of the relationship between Gavin and Rielle. Both characters are older than your typical romance as Gavin is 42 and Rielle is 40. This is not to say that they're not just as hot and heavy or less passionate than a younger couple. The plot here was less about 'finding themselves' and more about adjusting their lives to include each other.

Since Gavin is an outsider, I think you could get away with reading Gone Country as a stand-alone. The other McKays do make cameos and his relationships with Vi & Charlie are important, but I think as long as you know that Gavin is their biological child, you're pretty much good to go.

Thoughts before reading Gone Country: Yeah baby I finally have my hands on a hot piece of reading material from my favorite series from my favorite author.

Thoughts during reading Gone Country: This is nothing like a typical Rough Riders book, but gee I love me some hot citified Gaven! Double Yum!

Thoughts after reading Gone Country: I feel a little sad and blue. Why!? Because I realize there is only two more book to this series and while I can't wait to get my fingers on them, I really don't want it to end.

So, this makes me wonder if there will be a spin off with the brat?! I really hope so, or maybe book 16 but I really hope it's a spin off.

Soooooo, does anyone have any ideas on who book 16 is about???

4.5 stars contemp romance!

4.5 Stars bumped up to 5!

Gavin Daniels...boy was I bummed when I seen he had the next book. But I should of never doubted Lorelei James...Gavin was just as hott as his McKay brothers & cousins!

I really liked how there was mention of all the other McKays & Wests throughout the whole book...it's nice to get little updates on them. And to see some of the little McKays growin up...aww. Ky was always one of my favorite little men.

Do we think will get a book? I would love to read about him! Either way Dalton is next & I'm excited to read about the baby faced McKay.

I'd give this one 10 stars if I could. I totally fell in love with Gavin. He's such a sweet man, but let's not forget he's still a McKay which means he's also bossy, stubborn, and completely lickable. Ah, you gotta love those McKays.
There's a lot going on in this book, some surprises, but LJ does a fantastic job of pulling it all together for one fantastic entertaining ride.
This one is sure to be a fan favorite.

I loved the story of Gavin and Rielle. But I especially loved the side story of Sierra and Boone and really hope someday they will have a story.
It was great to see past McKays as always. I also liked how this story progresses over a year and shows the growth and problems Gavin and Rielle have to deal with and overcome.
I haven't read a McKay story yet that I don't love and this didn't disappoint. It was also nice to read about older characters instead of 20 somethings.

This book is all about DECISIONS.

Decisions that make you happy.

Decisions that affect those you love.

Hard decisions.

Life changing decisions.

A few years ago, I honestly did not care AT ALL about cowboys, bull riders, barrel racers, saddle bronc competitions, cattle and live stock, being a rancher or two stepping until I read a book by Mrs. James. My love for the all American tradition of cowboy life is all because of her.

Let me start by making clear that I love Lorelei James’s books. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. OF. THEM. So saying all the typical “this book is awesome”, “this is full of emotional rollercoasters”, “I freaking loved it” and all those same old KNOWN facts, is a little bit overrated at this point.

What I will do, is give you a breakdown of the overall content of this very particular story which made me seriously re think about some decisions I’ve made thru my life.

Please correct me if I’m mistaken, but it is my understanding that Gone Country is the “almost” end of the Rough Riders series. We are waiting (eagerly, I must say) for the last installment sometime during the spring, which is Dalton McKay’s story: Redneck Romeo. For that alone, this was a very, VERY, bittersweet book for me. I have grown so attached to Mrs. James’s stories that knowing I won’t have any more McKay’s in my reading life makes me feel like I’m losing a limb. Seriously. The funny part is, Gone Country is the least cowboy-ish story of all.

If you have religiously followed the Rough Riders series (chronologically) you most likely remember who Gavin Daniels is and when he appeared for the first time. You may also remember a little bit of the background that was shared about him and the way he decided to look out for his McKay family.

For someone like Gavin who had a nice childhood, a very successful career and a business which gave him everything he needed to provide for his daughter, to reach age 40 and find out he was an adopted kid and that his biological mother gave him away must’ve been something beyond hard, mostly, when he has a kid of his own that he can’t live without.

Thinking about what this means in real life, I can’t help to feel jealous of Sierra. She’s a kid with everything, despite the fact that her parents are divorced. When Sierra hits those “rebellious” years and starts getting into a lot of trouble, Gavin must make a serious decision to keep his daughter from getting into MORE trouble, and decides to move to Wyoming. Mind you, Sierra doesn’t like it, but has to stick with her dad’s decision for her own good.

And over there, far away in Wyoming, Rielle Wetzler has made the decision (a little bit pressed by her daughter Rory) to have a makeover. Her new look will open not only her eyes, but also Gavin’s who remembers her like the eco-friendly-tree-hugger-organic-hippie-farmer who made a living out of her garden grown vegetables and baked bread. As you may also remember, Rielle had sold her Bed & Breakfast to Gavin yet she still lived there as Gavin thought it would be best since he still managed his business in Arizona. Once he arrives in Wyoming and makes all the necessary arrangements to manage his business from there, Rielle is still living in HIS house.

I just LOVE how Mrs. James creates this FANTASTIC environment where ALL her women are more than just delicate wallflowers.

Here’s my FAVORITE Rielle moment:

“What do you want to say to me, Rielle?"

“I want more of you. More of us. But naked this time. I wanna feel your hands on me. I wanna feel your mouth on me. God, Gavin I’m dying to feel every inch of your body rubbing on mine. Like at least four times tonight”.

Jesus fucking Christ

“What do you have to say to that?”

And of course, these wouldn’t be true COWBOYS if she wouldn’t make them complete ALPHA.

Here’s my FAVORITE Gavin moment:

“But we are more than just body heat and movement beneath the sheets in this darkness”. He nuzzled her neck. “I thought about how perfect it feels when I slide into you. When I hear that catch in your breath and I know in that moment you’re only mine”

This is a book I will hold close to my heart for a long time. Like all her previous installments, Mrs. James digs deep into family ties, simple life, and love. Once again, we had an ABSOLUTE WINNER in Gone Country.

”A man loves a woman, he loves her. Period. He cares for her and he protects her. Not because that’s his job but because he oughta want to.”

”The hippie chick and the businessman” that pretty much sums up Gavin and Rielle, I had a hard time getting into their story, they both were in their 40’s and both very inexperienced in relationships, but once I did I realized they were a perfect for each other, they had a connection that was genuine and they steamed the pages up quite a bit. Just sad to say, I enjoyed the secondary stories more…

Sierra and Boone gave me what I needed, the angsty drama, the cute love story, and also the heartache. Sierra, young cute, underestimated daughter of Gavin meets nineteen year old Boone West, they have some family ties but are NOT related. The very few times they hit the page, I felt greedy wanting more and more of them … They were just so *squee* The whole time they told everyone, even themselves that

then he had to go all alpha and "take" her first kiss

"...his kiss was like a drug. Intense, determined, amazingly seductive-as if he was trying to convince her that his passion for her was real. That he’d been imagining this kiss for as long as she had. That he’d wanted it as much.”

and then he breaks their hearts, that is when I completely lost my *hit, I'm a mess,

The first thing I did when I finished the book was go to Ms. James website and see if she is working on Sierra and Boone's story and Halle-freakin-lujah she is. This makes me very, very happy! I know it’s something I’m gonna have to wait for but it will be totally worth it.

This is the 14th book in the series, so I’m pretty invested in the McKay family, this book shed light to some of the history of the family drama which was cool to learn about. Also, being able to see Gavin bridge the gap and accept more of the McKay family as his own. Counting down, two more books to go ‘till the end of the series and five more months till the next release.
