Midnight #2.5

Heat of the Night

Rate this book
From the USA Today bestselling author-a two-in-one volume of her extraordinary shapeshifting romances, Hunting Midnight and "The Night Owl."

Featuring her novel Hunting Midnight and its sequel novella, "The Night Owl," Heat of the Night is Emma Holly at her paranormal best.

In Hunting Midnight , the leader of a pack of shapeshifting immortals is betrayed by his longtime lover. Consumed with fury, he ventures recklessly beyond the borders of the Scottish forest-and into the desperate arms of a merchant's daughter.

In "The Night Owl," a member of the same pack has been sent to America where his power can grow unimpeded. In a small Vermont town, his desire for a local baker makes him believe he has found his mate-and he'll do anything to claim her.

I'm a USA Today bestselling author who LOVES the hot stuff, both to read and to write. My favorite obsessions are all things coffee, almost everything on HGTV, and dreaming up new stories.

Two stories in one book, Hunting Midnight is the story of Juliana Baxton whose plan to run away instead of forced into a marriage she does not want leads her into the path of a upyr whose own betrayal by the one he loved has him reeling. When Juliana blackmails Ulric into taking her with him back to his pack, he promises but finds his heart slowly belonging to Juliana and he wants desperately for her to capture his.

The Night Owl is a brief story of Bastien Luce who you meet in the first book. Bastien has been waiting for his one true mate, Mariann O'Faolain, even though he is centuries old when it comes to Mariann he does not know how to go about winning her heart, until fate steps in and offers him no choice.

An interesting series, I was interested in what would happen in the book. The only character that really had me captivated was Bastien but his story is rather short.

Hunting Midnight continues on with Ulric desperately trying to fill the gap in his heart after losing Gillian when he encounters Juliana who is desperate to escape an arranged marriage. Juliana blackmails Ulric into helping her and we follow their adventures on their run to Scotland and Ulric's pack where they have still more adventures. Holly does a nice job of "rehabilitating" Ulric after his poor showing in Catching Midnight.

"Night Owl" takes place 700 years later when Ulric banishes his French upyrs, Bastien and Emile, to America where the two buy an inn in Vermont, and Bastien encounters a passionate baker who is harassed by an ex-best friend after her grandfather's recipes.

Holly has created a new form of vampire/shapeshifter which she has christened "upyr" with empathic characters.
