Deadlines and Dryads is the first story in a new series set in the same world as Rebecca Chastain's Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles. You don't have to read the original series first (although I'd highly recommend it because it's one of my favourites!) but if you are familiar with the previous stories then you'll recognise a few of the characters in this spin off. Reporter Kylie was one of my favourite side characters in the other books so I was really excited when I found out she was getting her own series, she's such a fun character and this story really gives her a chance to shine.

A once in a lifetime event is about to happen and the Terra Haven newspaper has given all of it's reporters 48 hours to come up with the most impressive story they can find. The winner will be sent on the trip of a lifetime and given the chance to report exclusively on an event that occurs only once every few hundred years. Kylie may be a junior reporter but she is absolutely determined to win, she even has her eye on what could be the perfect scoop. Well it was until her sneaky coworker started following her around so he could write the prize winning story on the back of her hard work. The only chance Kylie has is to make sure she gets her story written faster than Nathan can but she's going to need all the help she can get to achieve that goal.

I love how determined Kylie is and the way she is able to keep fighting for what she wants no matter how many knocks she gets along the way. Nathan is despicable but I think pretty much all of us will have come across someone like him at some point in time, the kind of person who isn't willing to put the effort in but will cut any corner he can to make sure it looks like he did. It would have been so easy for Kylie to give up and let Nathan get the better of her but she's stronger than that and I couldn't have been more happy every time she outmanoeuvred him!

Luckily Kylie has a few allies in her corner to help, starting with adorable gargoyle and reporter in training Quinn. You might remember Quinn as one of the gargoyles rescued my Mika in the original series but he's become rather attached to Kylie and the two of them make a great team. He is ridiculously cute but also a steadfast and powerful companion and I loved seeing how curious he was about everything Kylie was doing. Her less reluctant ally is Grant, member of the FPD (Federal Pentagon Defence) who also appeared in the previous books. Grant is the leader of his FPD unit but he's investigating his current job alone while the rest of his team are tied up with another case. He would rather keep Kylie out of harm's way and well away from the action but once he realises how determined she is to see things through he realises they might as well work together and ends up accepting her help.

This is a brilliant start to Kylie's series, the story is fun and fast paced and I found it an incredibly quick read. It's also full of interesting supernatural creatures that you don't come across very often in young adult urban fantasy. While the story works as a complete stand alone you get a few hints about where the series is going and I'm definitely very interested to see what happens on Kylie's next assignment.

This story is currently only available in the Elementals: a Limited Edition Urban Fantasy Collection but it will be being published separately soon.

Thoughts after beta reading:

Deadlines & Dryads is the first story in a new series by Rebecca Chastain set in the same world as the Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles and starring reporter Kylie who made regular appearances in the first series.

Full disclosure, I beta read this story for the author because she knows I'm a such a huge fan of the original series but that hasn't effected my rating. Kylie has always been a brilliant character and it was great to see her get a chance to shine.

I'll be rereading this when a finished version has been published so I'll write a full review then but Gargoyle Guardian fans rejoice, we've not seen the last of the world yet!

It was the chance of a lifetime for Kylie Grayson, young journalist/reporter at the Terra Haven newspaper. All she had to do was grab the best headline, write the best copy and beat her co-workers to press with it, oh, she has 48 hours to do so. Who knew the normally peaceful Dryads would give her the story she needed when they went berserk in the woodlands, rampaging like crazed monsters? All Kylie had to do was get close enough to the action for a firsthand account and beat out the office hotshot in the process. With her trusty young gargoyle friend, Quinn at her side, how could she fail?

Enter Grant, FPD officer and now Kylie’s biggest obstacle to getting her story. Can Kylie convince Grant he is better off keeping her close by rather than trusting her to just give up on her story on his command? Seriously, has he never seen a reporter who has smelled a breaking story?
Hang on for the ride of your life as Grant reluctantly teams up with Kylie and Quinn in a face-off against the Dryads where magic abounds and danger is only a spell away!

Rebecca Chastain’s DEADLINES & DRYADS is a fast-paced, furiously exciting and fun trip into the world where gargoyles and magic users are the norm as one feisty reporter goes toe to toe with the authorities and a band of raging Dryads with the adorable Quinn by her side!

Will Kylie earn the coveted “chance of a lifetime?” Will she put Nathan in his place at the paper? I absolutely loved this tale from Rebecca Chastain! It has all of the ingredients required for a fabulous, light-hearted read!...and Quinn, who couldn’t love a gargoyle?

Right now, you can get Deadlines & Dryads for free!

Grab your copy of Deadlines & Dryads while it's free, then continue the story with Leads & Lynxes!

After the Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles trilogy (Magic of the Gargoyles, Curse of the Gargoyles, Secret of the Gargoyles), readers told me they wanted more of this world.

So I wrote Deadlines & Dryads, featuring Kylie, Mika's best friend.

Then I realized I had a whole lot more of Kylie and Quinn's adventure to get on the page, and Terra Haven Chronicles trilogy (Leads & Lynxes, Headlines & Hydras, Muckrakers & Minotaurs) was born!

Note: You don't need to read the Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles before Deadlines & Dryads to understand the world, characters, or plot. The events of GGC do, however, take place before Deadlines & Dryads.

ADDITIONAL FREEBIES

Read the "Once-in-a-Lifetime Question" crossover short story featuring Kylie and Mika on my website, but do so AFTER Deadlines & Dryads to avoid spoilers.

A fun urban fantasy romp with a journalist, a police officer, and a host of fantasy characters that didn't include vampires and werewolves/shifters. Fresh and fun.

Lovely book. I honestly think I prefer Kylie to Mika, and I already loved Mika.

I still absolutely love the gargoyles of this world, and the continuous descriptions of stones - not to mention the magic. Definitely worth immersing yourself in.

Fun!

I am really enjoying this fantasy adventure series! Strong female leads, and the men that they crush on, gargoyles, harpies, dryads and Spriggans. Plus annoying reporters ;)

Wow. What an amazing fantasy book about Dryads. A first for me, but definitely want more of this genre soon . Impossible to put it down, only a prequel, which isn’t very long, which gets you ready for what’s coming.

I usually don't like scary books! I am a coward of the first degree. Give me romance or some other fluff and I am a happy camper but this book made my heart do flip flops and had a great many awwww moments! Kylie is a journalist but one with little status. She is in a contest to see who can write the best story and is running against some of the top journalists at her paper. She is good friends of a Griffin and a military Captain and they wind up fighting monsters to protect the trees and the Dryads. No spoilers here! It is of violence and compassion and working together to save the lives of the trees when a Spriggan goes amok! This story has heart! A little nod to romance but that is not why I loved it!

I don't even know how to describe my joy in this tale

Kylie, and Grant. Add Quinn who enhances magic, then a spriggan on the rampage. Dryads in fear of their lives, a harpy and more. Grant the equivalent of.. I don't know... Greek god? With strong magic. Kylie a reporter trying to find truth but end up in the middle of everything...

When journalist Kylie Grayson heard these rumors about the dryads unusual behavior she grabs the chance to research the story. She dives right into the heart of the Dryads’ community. Is she prepared for what she might find? If tried and true magic is for, if you love magical creatures and spellbinding adventure. This book is for you! I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the book with no monetary compensation

Pretty good

This was a cute and wholesome story.

All innocence and about coming out on top while still doing the right thing. Sacrificing yourself for the better good and all the good sides winning.

I'm not always about everything being so happily-ever-after, but it worked in this case. There were still some hardships and a little loss.

Fast and interesting read. I enjoyed the details included.

I have been waiting for Kylie's story ever since I met her with Mika. So when I heard there was a new book, I went "me! me! me!". I was so happy to get my greedy paws on it!

Kylie is always on the lookout for a new story and when her higher ups present a contest of sorts about finding the best story with the reward of covering the budding of an Everlasting Tree, she takes it up with her usual enthusiasm. And how she delivers a fascinating story along with the adventure which finds her in her quest makes up the book.

The author again delivers a deliciously intense adventure in the world of Gargoyles. But this time, though Quinn represents the Gargoyles in the tale, we get to meet more fantastical creatures of their world like Dryads and others.

I have seen Kylie as a very energetic person and that doesn't change at all. She is always in the thick of things and this time it lands her in a situation way out of her comfort zone. But not to worry, Grant is there to keep her safe and the action going strong. From the beginning to the end, I loved reading about the fight with the Spriggan. The action scenes form the base and they entertain with engrossing details.

The romance was downplayed though Kylie's interest was evident throughout the story. At times, it had me rolling my eyes at her because of her distraction in the midst of the tense situation. The ending wasn't without its own twist. What I thought would happen didn't even cover what I read.

In a line, I can say that I absolutely loved delving into a familiar world with different protagonists and fantastical beasts! Now I can't wait to see how the series continues.

I voluntarily received a copy for reviewing purposes. This doesn't impact my review in any way.

My one line review : A deliciously intense action plot with a slightly twisted end.

My rating : 5/5

My reread factor : 4/5

4.5 stars: (review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

If you haven't read anything by Rebecca Chastain yet, then you are missing out on one highly creative author. Her fantasy tales have unique characters, battle scenes and plots that set her apart from other paranormal authors.

In Deadlines & Dryads, Rebecca stepped outside the paranormal norm and weaved together a storyline I haven't read about before. She introduced to us dryads; a nymph inhabiting a forest or a tree, especially an oak tree. The dryads are in a frenzy because a sick spriggan is in their midst. That's terrible news for a dryad because a hungry spriggan will eradicate anything in its path.  To a dryad, that means they are its dinner.

To solve the issue of the spriggan, Kylie and Grant go in search of Landewednack dragon's breath; an uncommon weapon used against a rare, extraordinary opponent. The battle against the spriggan wasn't your typical knife, sword, guns blazing type of scenario. Their larger than life adversary used vines, roots, and pollen mist to keep them at bay.

The fight to save the dryads, the Emerald Crown Grove, is surely one you haven't seen played out often (or ever).

Another scene you might've never read/watched before...... How about someone using magic to clean out the feces and bones from a harpy's nest?

Like I stated above, Rebecca doesn't write normal, boring stories. What she creates is memorable books that keep you coming back for more.

**FYI --- What's a sick spriggan look like? Think of a hulked out Groot (Marvel)**

Happy Reading!!

Fantastic introduction to the Terra Haven Chronicles in the Guardian Gargoyles Chronicles world. In a battle against all of the other journalists at the Terra Haven Chronicle, junior reporter Kylie Grayson is determined to win. The prize is a once in a lifetime assignment. She has to try to get her story before a slimey co-worker, Nathan, steals it away. With Quinn (her gargoyle helper) at her side she joins Grant Monaghan, Captain of the Federal Pentagon Defense warriors, to save the dryads and the city. They will meet with a harpy and make a deal with her to try to defeat a spriggan threatening the forest and anything in his way. Quinn is there to add his talents to the mix. As Kylie and Grant combine their magic to accomplish their task, all sorts of thoughts about Grant begin to infiltrate her thoughts. I loved this short story and would LOVE to learn more about Grant, a lot more.

My Thoughts:
Having been hooked and addicted to Rebecca Chastain's story telling quality, of course I have to read more of her books, thus this book got bought and read. The world building has long ago been established in the Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles and the goodness of it is carried over to this offshoot series. This book also have the same lovable character development which is getting to be a trademark of this author. Unfortunately though, the TSTL (too stupid to live) element also kind of carried over too. However, it is easy for me to wilfully ignore it in this book for the wonderful reading time that it gave me!

Empirical Evaluation:
Story telling quality = 4.5
Character development = 5
Story itself = 4.5
Writing Style = 4.5
Ending = 4
World building = 5
Cover art = 5
Pace = 5
Plot = 3.5

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Kylie is a journalist that needs to find a great story to be the one sent to a once in a lifetime opportunity. Her coworker Nathan is a scumbag and a senior journalist that has no problem stealing Kylie's stories.
Dryads are not behaving normally, there must be a story, so they are off to get that story. Follow this really good book! It is full of magical creatures and those from myth. A story well written, engaging that will keep you reading!

Gargoyle Secrets

This book is about the reporter friend of Mica. I got into the series by accident after looking for the next book in the Gargoyle Series. It perhaps says a lot that I purchased the entire set, one after the other and finished them on the same day. I guess my problem is that I read too fast.

Oo the battle descriptions just go on and on. I like the chemistry between the characters. (If you've read the gargoyle trilogy I'm sure you already caught onto it.) I'm really excited for more in this world. And hopefully get to interact with previous characters!
