Blades Of Illusion is book two in the Crown Service series by Terah Edun. This book starts off right where Blades of Magic ends. So, their is no time wasted. We jump right back into the war and trying to discover what really happened to Sara Fairchild’s father.

Sara is a great strong female who grows a little with the help of her friend Ezekiel. He’s slipped under her defenses and has found a spot in her life. She needs Ezekiel! She knows how to fight, to do battle, to be a leader, but interacting with people outside of fighting, well she’s not good with this, so that’s where he comes in. I liked the character growth Sara goes through. We get a little more on her past, which is nice.

As for why this war started and what happened to her father, well we still don’t know. We are searching, but not much happens on this front. Their is a lot of action and battles, which are well done, but at times the story was a bit slow. I will say I still have a lot of questions then answered, but that’s ok. It gives me a reason to keep reading and see what happens next.

Just like the first book this one ends quickly and at a point where I wish it hadn’t. The ending felt like it ended in the middle of a chapter at a spot I wouldn’t have expected it to end, especially when things where heating up with action. This is my only issue with Blades Of Illusion, and well the series so far, is where it ends. Other then that I throughly enjoyed this installment and can’t wait to read on.

The author has created a rich world with fantastic characters. Blades Of Illusion is a light easy read full of action and suspense.

Ok first I say that I love Terah Edun's work. I have everything that I can get on my nook because I prefer that. I was disappointed to not get this on nook also and was waiting to see if it would ever go there. But since it is only on Amazon I do not think it is likely. That started my disappointment but it was something I could handle.

In general this book left me with more questions then answers and an overall disappointment feeling. You do not find out most of the interesting things until the end with it being slow to get there. We do get a lot of Sara's past which was nice. I enjoyed her day dreams and that she can seem like a regular person at times.

Did this make me want to keep reading? I would say yes because Terah has away with telling a story that will pull you in and make you want more even as you are thinking wtf. I dislike when I have more questions then answers and feel losted at the end of a book. Let's just say that is one major cliff hanger. I read to enjoy and get taken on an adventure. However, we have here was not much of one since she was trying to find out why the hell there is a war going on and what is actually happened to cause her father's death, plus how everyone seems to know her friend. But did we/she get answers... nope! More questions arrised which kind of put me in a funk. I also read this book in two hours which surprised me completely. I would have enjoyed more answers... Maybe the next one? Hopefully!

I don't know why I did that to myself.

What a terrible book about the constant musings and stupid thoughts of an egotistical little girl. She gripes from her moral high horse for so long that she's pretty much beating the dead horse. And why does complaining about the captain's lack of morals always have to be tied into how great he looks? It's like a cliche romance plot is forthcoming...

Did the editor (or maybe even the writer) change somewhere along the way? The first book was constant action (maybe too much even with three warehouse break-ins within say....6 hours). This book went nowhere basically. It's 50% complaining about a swamp, 50% about randomly trying to find people, and 100% acting as if she's the best fighter and deserves to know everything all the time.

And my complaint about the first book holds true. This is the worst kind of fantasy because it reminds you that it's fantasy. At one point she jumps on an attacker "cowboy style." Wow, didn't realize cowboys were a thing there.

I Need This Book To Pick a Journey

*****Spoilers*****

I wasn't ready for where this book began to detour and because of it, I'm not certain what to make of it. Sara joins the Corcoran Guard to get to the man who knew her father because she's looking for her father's journals, perhaps for an explanation about why he was labeled a deserter. This book picks up with Sara just come from a battle with the Kade mages, better termed a slaughter really, when she realized that their commanding officer purposely sacrificed hundreds of mercenaries in his company. Sara is understandably affronted by Captain Barthis' decision and tells him so by way of calling him a coward and disloyal followed by spitting in his face. In front of the mercenaries under his command. Not the wisest move, but her emotions came over her and Sara couldn't move on without that outward display. Her punishment for it though was a fight with her fellow mercenaries until another commander said stop. While Sara meets the challenge head on and defeats several of the other mercenaries in combat, particularly because she has anger to burn off, she's flagging and is saved by the Red Lion Guard leader Kansid before she dies. Kansid calls off the matches and heals her enough that she doesn't die before she can be seen by the healers. Sara, prior to knowing Kansid's identity promises him aid whenever he needs at some undisclosed point or way in future.

From there, I was expecting that Sara would track down more information about Hillian, his whereabouts or really anything she can learn about her father first, perhaps the Kade mages second. Instead, what we get is a whole lot of camp life, skirmishes, vengeful leaders giving her grueling duties, and a slow transformation from standoffish solitary warrior girl with pride and honor and a namesake to back her up, to a more open but still surly girl who is quietly building a rebellion around her. By the end of the book, she and friends are a group of 13, who were basically sent to die on a mission to clean up bodies at the Kade battle they escaped, but bonded over their survival once the true purpose of that assignment became known to them. Now, Sara and crew are not only NOT dead, but have solidified for themselves a team ready to have one another's backs over the mercenary captains. Though careful to indicate their rebellion is not against they crown and they're still loyal to the empire, it's just the mercenary leadership Sara and crew have a problem with. In any case, at the end of this book, Sara again gets into a situation where she defies captain Barthis by standing in front of his whipping the sun mage they have in their camp. Sara can't just stand by and do nothing, even if the woman tried to betray Sara and have her killed. Cue eye roll. Hard. And then again.

This version of Sara I understand but not really. Because the sun mage could've easily just asked her people to lead her away and incapacitate or tie Sara up when they came. Instead, she specifically ordered Sara's death. However, that betrayal is just whatever but earns the sun mage more protection from Sara. So much so that she's willing to step in front of a whip for the sun mage. All the while, Sara still loathes Captain Barthis for deserting his mercenary companies when he perhaps could've just brought them through a portal. There are other places in the book where I'm confused by Sara's actions, don't understand what the author is trying to hint at with the conversations and discussions between the characters, and even places where we're left with a vague sense of a plan but without being let in on what exactly the plan is. It's like being along for the journey every step and conversation of the way, but still being left out. Makes no sense to me why these plans are hinted at instead of spelled out some way, even if it's subtly disclosed.

For sure this one was interesting but the slow pace in the middle was a distraction and I couldn't really get behind the new Sara. Partially because I just didn't believe it that she changed so quickly and partly because I don't know what her goal is now. Not to mention, there are parts I was expecting to be amswered that weren't. Some of the questions were, what happened to that dragonfly ball, why the squad leader Karina hated Sara, why is Sara so off putting at times for no reason, what happened with the weapons she forged with her magic and did it create new abilities, and what exactly is a kith?

The story is still a good one and I'm interested in understanding more but we'll see how the next one goes.

Disappointing

The first book was good enough to show promise, but I regret purchasing the second. Set aside the fact that two and a half things happen in this book (only), the realism is full blown out the window. A few hundred bodies wouldn't rot into ankle deep sludge throughout a large field. Working a forge wouldn't be the worst job in a military outpost, nor would it be assigned to an untrained new recruit. Someone with two burst eardrums wouldn't be able to hold a conversation with another person. There are so many more unrealistic, stupid assertions in this book, as well as repeated, redundant, unnecessary information throughout that i am confident the first book was written with large amounts of help from a second person. That or the first was edited by someone who became unavailable afterwards.

I am severely disappointed, and feel cheated out of the price of this book.

Characters are great... if a bit conflicted

SPOLIERS

I was baffled with the behaviour of Sara towards Nissa... and her seeming inability to actively THINK and rationalise through several conflicts in this book. The portion with Nissa took the cake for me though... as someone, so honour bound and prideful... so focus of justice... as someone who also killed and tortured in the previous book... I found her aversion to the torture Nissa suffered unrealistic and unreasonable. Here is someone who admitedly killed hundreds of soldiers you wish to stand for and betrayed you... and you have an that she is being tortured? Why? Does her gender erase all the bad and evil she has been responsible for? It shouldn't.

I will admit I struggled a little with this one, mostly I think it was me though, and not the book itself. Sara is another great strong female protagonist and it was great to get to know a little more about her, and she had a really well developed character arc in this book.

I did think the action was a bit slow at times and I've been left with more questions than answers but that's fine, it gives me something to look forward to for the next book. Terah has created a rich world with fascinating characters once again and I am looking forward to the continuation of Sara's story.

Further adventures of Sara Fairchild, fearless warrior

Sara’s is a member of the royal army; she’s also on the wrong side of those leading the army. Moreover, she’s filled with anger at those who left those warriors to die. When she brings it up, however, she finds herself the target of her “compatriots “ and has to fight for her life.
This is an adventure-centered book, centered more on fighting than other matters—like trying to find out who killed her father after branding him a traitor.
Good, well written book.

I have been waiting sooo long for this book after loving book 1 (Blades of Magic) & recently got an opportunity to become an advance reader with a free copy for review purposes.

This book deals with a variety of struggles as Sara battles her own teenage temper and everyone around her while trying to discover who can & cannot be trusted. It keeps you reading and introduces new characters that I am sure will feature more throughout the series - Now I can't wait for book 3!

the main mystery about why her dad was killed did not progress further.
Although we did see serious development of Sara and her relationships, with her forming her own team. It was a lil disappointing to not see more progress on that aspect.

But solid book and good story telling and world building.

Despite the length of time it took me to read this book I actually enjoyed it. My life has been a little bit nuts over the past couple of months so making that time was a victory for me. The subject matter didn't hurt either: strong heroine, villains & obstacles to overcome with some interesting magic wielding thrown in.....I'm looking forward to witness where this all leads. I'm adding Book 3 to my "Want to Read" list and - hopefully - I can get through it a lot quicker than this one!

Great series, lots of action.

Enjoying series. Most of the time it moves quickly, although sometimes it got out in the woods a bit. Good characters in Sara and Ezekiel, but still not fully getting them. The other characters lack depth and I have no clue what the war is about with the Kades of who is good or bad. But all in all, a fun exciting book and series. Happy Reading!!!!

The adventure and action continue!

Terah Edun does it again! Spinning a story with wonderful characters and lots of action and adventure! Sara continues on her adventure in this sequel to Blades of Magic. This book deals mostly with Sara and how her service influences her mentally while still having action packed fight scenes. Can Sara come out of this adventure with her sanity intact?

This book was fantastic! Picking up right after Blades of Magic left with that evil ending, events just happen! Such a great book and a great sequel, and I can't wait for more! Though I do want Sworn to Justice (as it currently seems to be titled) more, given that it's the end of a 12 book series!

Good follow up

Great sequel but the girl was getting on my nerves with her unjustified hostility, pettiness and bad attitude. I liked her side kick much more. The fights, brutality, gore, betrayals were still awesome especially when some unexpected friendships developed.

A good series

I’m enjoying this series. The passion and fight of the main character as well as the growing relationship with her friend is an interesting combination. I’m anxious to see where the rest of the story leads.

Part two of ‘Crown Service’ continues the saga of Mercenary Fairchild’s journey. The problems she encounters causes her to grow with the undercurrent of the possibility of magic. Good read.

An engaging read that was as good as the first book in the series, Blades of Magic. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, what decision will be made?? At this point, you already love Sarah and Ezekiel, but now you get to meet more characters that you both love and despise. I can't wait to start the third book in this book series, Blades of Sorcery. These books are a quick but engaging read.

I enjoyed the story, but it didn't have a real ending. You're just left hanging, and I hate books that do that. I'd have rated this four and a half stars with a real ending.

This novel is the second book in Edun's Crown Service series. Let me start off by saying that the first book, Blades of Magic, is so good that it would be difficult to repeat. There's still plenty of good action scenes and choreographed fighting sequences in this book. The awesome characters, old and new, are included. I do hope Sara's character opens up a bit more in the next one and I look forward to learning more about E Crane and his family. The beginning starts off great and the author has nailed the ending with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger. There is a portion in the middle that slows down the pace. The intro to the next installment looks promising. The setting and world-building in this book is still extraordinary, just like so many of Edun's other works.
