The Pageant of Japanese History

Rate this book
As people of the Western World become increasingly aware of their neighbors in the East, this revised and expanded edition of the classic which was first published in 1938 will be doubly welcome. The author begins with a discussion of the earliest known settlers of Japan and guides the reader through the centureies of many dynasties, painting a vivid, selective picture of Japan's its heritage, the grace of its arts, the exotic court life of its emperors, its first brush with Western culture in the coming of Christian missionaries and Dutch traders, the poser of its industries and the somber story of its crowded people. Several Chapters as well as many other parts of the text have been rewritten in the light of knowledge gained from recent research and archaeological finds. The two new chapters at the end cover pertinent aspects of World War II, the American occupation, and up-to the-minute political, religious, commercial and cultural trends. The value fo the volume is strengthened by an outline chart of the history of Japanese culture, a glossary of Japanese proper names, and an index.

A fairly solid book about Japanese history that was published originally in the 30's. The history that it exceeds at is anything pre-WW2. Most of the stuff about WW2 or after it feels slightly tacked on sadly. If you're interested about anything regarding pre-WW2 Japan then this is a pretty decent book to check out.
