What Early Readers are "The writing in this book was beautiful and full of emotion. Mirra is an aspiring, strong-willed character who plays smart and truly cares for family. I like that! She makes friends out of enemies is isn’t afraid to fight against all odds. The plot and suspense had me guessing back and forth who was friend and who was foe. Talk about having you on the edge of a cliff! Great action in this book and a steadily climaxing plot that ends with a clever and unexpected resolution."

Claire Merle grew up in London and moved to the outskirts of Paris in her twenties. She is the author of four books for Young Adults, including the award-winning fantasy, Shadow Weaver.
For fantasy readers seeking a refreshing and vividly-imagined story with political intrigue where romance doesn't take over the plot, this is the book! The heroine's motivations are driven by her love and loyalty for her little brother, and never once does she waver from her goal of making the world a safer place for him and her mystical race. Also, the memory magic was very cool, and I love that beautiful cover! :)

A hint of romance and strongly formed bonds is another reason you won’t be able to put it down!
Beautiful cover followed by an emotional story of a sister fighting to save her brother, those who also share her ability, the kingdom, and herself. I love a book that makes me question my loyalties to certain characters. I'm surprised at who I went from hating to loving (and from loving to questioning) by the end of this book. Interested to know what happens next.
We are proud to announce that SHADOW WEAVER: The Ederiss Chronicles by Claire Merle is a B.R.A.G.Medallion Honoree. This tells readers that this book is well worth their time and money!
Ahh how is the next book in this series not already out?? While the plot comes to a nice end point, the relationships between the various character are left very much unresolved. I want more!!
2.5 I struggled with the concept of this book. Some parts of how it was written left me confused about what was going on.
And did nobody else feel like Mirra had Stockholm syndrome in regards to Tug? It was disturbing that he was emotionally/verbally abusive and let her get smacked around by Brim, but they were best friends by the end. And it seemed like the author almost hinted at potential future romantic interest between the two IMO (even though she was only 16) by painting him in the roguish light. It was disturbing that Mirra's brother Kel (age 5) actually got sold, even though it was to the hidden Prince, and had to go through all the traumatizing events leading up to that and got beat until his face was black and blue, and his sister kept promising to save him but could never do it until the very end.
The end wrapped up so fast: the bad guy dying over eating poisoned food that Mirra had blindly sprinkled on the rolls while all Strik's trusted guards were standing at her cage and Strik himself just happened to turn his back on her long enough for her to do this and have nobody see. Yet she miraculously ate none of the poison herself while eating the same rolls.
I don't understand who the two kids were that talked to Tug at the end.
What happened to the Prince? And why did he love Mirra so quickly? What were Tug's motives in this whole thing from the beginning?
I feel like a second book is probably in the making...🤔🤷🏻♀️
P.s. I did like how the author keeps you guessing on who the good and bad guys are. I did a lot of back and forth because something would happen that would make me start doubting someone that i was just beginning to trust and the author did a good job of keeping that going. Also the book seemed pretty suspenseful and i finished it quickly, despite my poor review 😜
This is such an engaging tale, and well worth reading. The writing is good, not only pulling the reader into the story through good imagery, but also engaging the emotions.
It is an enticing story with wonderful characters. There are some things that could be improved to make this truly exceptional, however, I'm sure the author will continue to improve.
I certainly hope that there are more parts coming in this story, I await another instalment eagerly.
A fun read that had little to no romance that is always a refreshing step away from the normal for fantasy/YA. Mirra is a good character with a strong love for her brother that makes us instantly pull for her. I can't say I quite ever connected with Tug. I think his actions for most of the book defined him too much for me to accept a shift later on. If nothing else his narking to the duchess made me want to wring his neck.
I liked the prince and the mystery of what kind of person he was. That was well-played. And I liked the mysterious lover of the prince's. A great twist that I didn't see coming and I thought she was really developed as a character especially considering how late in the book she shows up.
The ultimate confrontation with the villain was awesomely done. It was believable and I think knowing how smart and paranoid he was we really had to believe that however they confronted him would work. I wasn't sure how they were going to defeat him or if they would. But I was really hoping that whatever the resolution was that I would believe it, and I did.
It was a bit slow in a sense early on and I wasn't sure where things were going because the rescue kept dragging out and then adding elements, like the prince, that made it more complicated. I was really glad the major plot wasn't her rescuing her brother because I don't think that alone would've carried the story. The hangups she was hitting would've been too frustrating to make for an enjoyable read if that had been the only goal.
I ended up enjoying this way more than I thought I would. The blurb sounded like it was going to be right up my alley, definitely what I was in the mood for, but it also sounded like an ambitious story, so I was prepared for it to go either way.
Some reviews complained about how you don't get any answers for why the world works the way it does, but honestly, I had no problem setting reality aside to embrace the world building entirely. I'm fine with not having all the answers. Plus, since the title says "chronicles", I'm assuming there will be more to come? Gotta save some reveal for the sequel!
The story isn't overly action-packed, but I never felt like it was too slow. Even those *slower* scenes were interesting, well-written, compelling me to read well past my bedtime. There was depth to most of the characters, but I still feel like I didn't get a good view of some of the secondary characters. I would love to learn more about them in further books, for sure. The editing was pretty great as well, with only a handful of typos. Overall, a pretty great read!
The only thing I didn't really buy into was the barely-there love story.
This book was awesome. The bond of brother and sister and how much family will do to protect each other. I really feel for Mirra.
Spoiler Alert!!! .

. What I love most about this book is that in the end Mirra wasn't with anyone she could of ended up with the Prince but she chose her love of her brother and family. Mirra doesnt need a man she is happy on her own.
It's compelling! I've read this book on Wattpad, where Claire Merle posted it initially. The first thing I have to say is that the first person point of view is effectively chosen as well as present tense used throughout the book. This adds up to the adventure, it grips you as you follow Mirra's journey. The plot is great as well, I haven't yet encountered book in which people possessed abilities to read others' memories. Or maybe I have, but I just don't remember because they have't left a footprint in my memory. But this, the main character, Mirra, is well-developed and isn't shown as a typical YA strong girl, who falls in love with a handsome prince (so tired of reading about those). Instead, she ends up where she should be. Things are left at the right point in the end. Like I said, world-building is also well-developed as well as the settings. There are no info dumps throughout the book (even if there was, it didn't seem out of place). In some books you can meet long expositions of characters dumping Info or talking about their childhood, of which nobody really asked. But they still do :) So, 5 stars because this book is still in my memory even after 4 years since I have first read it.
Really, if you're searching for a well-written YA fantasy but also done with those cliched romance and overused plots, this is it. This is the book that'll open your eyes towards a whole new perspectives of all those books you've read. I honestly say that I expected romance throughout the story, however I didn't found any of those teenage-hormones-filled plot. What I do found is the meaning of love and sacrifices. The author did a great job in making us readers believe in the world she created. All the characters are convincing through their actions and choices they made in their journey. This is not that cliche story where the female protagonist meet her true love and the male romance interest is another cocky jock who knows how to kiss. No! I'm highly recommending it to those who seek fresh original ideas. Peace!
Some parts were difficult to read, especially as a mother. But those difficult passages were important to the overall storyline. As the synopsis eluded to, there is not much, or any, romance in this story. There are some hints along the way and some characters that have or develop those type of feelings but our heroine is quite immune. Which fits nicely within the storyline in my opinion. When you’re fighting tooth and nail to save your brother and keeping yourself alive by a thread, who has time for boys? I’m not sure if the author intends to create more in this series but it ended in a way that is complete. However, I can see several avenues that the author could explore to create a series. Guess I’ll just have to wait and see.
Shadow Weaver is a well written YA fantasy-thriller that is hard even for an adult to put down. Mirra’s quest is the searching of all adolescents to find their own strengths and abilities in the difficulty-strewn journey to adulthood. It is a passage that adults fight through as well, which is why Shadow Weavers gives us truths and wisdom helpful to us all. Mirra tells us sagely, “I feel the strength of those rushing winds, and know, unlike the mind, which can be shaped and distorted by pain, the light inside each of us can never be dulled. Our memories sculpt the story we tell about our lives, but they do not decide who we are.” Engaging characters. great plot and wonderful phrasing make this a book worth reading.
Though, I must admit, the author might need to work a little more on the romance side of things. Tug and Mirra had a lot more (probably not intended) chemistry than Mirra and Jakut (who definitely did not have enough page time together to warrant a budding romantic relationship). Still, I don't think the book really suffered for it, as the romance was never a big part of the story in the first place.
Would love more backstory on Tug, but that is more wish fulfillment than actual want. The ambiguity of the magic and the backstories of some characters didn't bother me all that much.
I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait for the next. I was looking for a fantasy with a strong female heroine and certainly found that in Shadow Weaver.
The characters are complex and dark. There's an element of romance, but it sits more in the background and isn't the main storyline, though it will be interesting to see how the characters develop.
I can’t remember the last time I read a book that was not in a duology or series. But I wasn’t disappointed when i picked up the novel Shadow Weaver by Claire Merle. She is an amazing storyteller that wrapped me in this book and even though i want to know more of what happens to the MC and Tug and Jakut in this little world I am content with how she ended it.
This was a well-written and enthralling story of survival in an interesting arctic-type fantasy world. The writing style is more centered on action than emotion , but the full range of the human experience, love, justice and suffering are all give their due. I look forward to Mirra's continuing story.
This book is one of the best I have read in awhile!
This book is well written, fast paced, with an unusual and very interesting plot. The characters are well developed, engaging, and intriguing such that I read it from cover to cover in one sitting. I recommend this book to both males and females, young adults and old-er adults too!
I am in LOVE with this book! It takes you on adventure to adventure and when you think that main character has got it all figured out, everything changes again. It was also a toss up between who I wanted her to be with out of the guys. Keeps you guessing, action packed and a fantastic female lead!
This book is very, very good. It starts off very dark and depressing, but picks up pretty well. My only complaint is how the end wraps up. Without saying any spoilers, I have to say it could have ended a little differently where I'd have felt happier. Anyway still a good read.
I loved this book, it was full of action and little emotion, although at the end I had wanted to see a bit more emotion. I left me wondering if the end is supposed to be a cliffhanger? But all in all it was well written and kept me so captivated that I read the whole book in a few hours. Definitely recommend it!
I enjoyed the twists and turns of the story. I did not once sigh in exasperation because of the characters actions, which was a nice change! The story is told in first person. At first I wasn't sure I would like that. But after awhile, it had the quality of feeling as though I was sitting beside Mirra, while she shared her experience. It is good. You will enjoy it.
The main char is a 16 year old girl who finds strength and character against terrible odds to try to keep her family together. She has to save herself along the way, as well as her friends who are trying to help her. She couldn't just rely on the handsome prince to do the job! A good lesson in self reliance and friendship earned.
I loved Mirra. She is the kind of person so courageous and kind with the kind of character you would want your children to have. Can't wait for other book to come out.
Wasn’t expecting this at all, but probably is one of the best books I’ve read yet this year. It had unexpected depth, twists, complex characters, and a world that’s got more stories to give still. Am looking forward to a lot more of this series!!
This was a really good book with great plot and character development. Enough romance to grab your attention, but it was refreshingly backseat to everything else. The book had a satisfying end, but definitely left you anxiously waiting for more!
I am so excited to hear there will be a sequel. Once I got into the story it was so hard to put down! I loved the twists and turns and the ending was so hopeful and bittersweet.
