All of Frederic Prokosch's novels are fascinating, and Storm and Echo, a hypnotic, hyperreal account of an expedition in Central Africa, is no exception. The perspective on Africa is that of an outsider, but does not pretend to be anything else. Prokosch was drawn to the "exotic" at a time when the concept had not fallen into disrepute, and readers whose contemporary sensitivities are really put off by that might not find his writings to their taste. Others will be mesmerized and will be drawn to further explore Prokosch's imaginative world, which uses the actual world mainly as a springboard.
