On the eve of his wedding comes the most intimate and informative portrait yet of Prince Harry, from royal expert Katie Nicholl, author of the bestselling William and Harry and Kate.
From his earliest public appearances as a mischievous redheaded toddler, Prince Harry has captured the hearts of royal enthusiasts around the world. In Harry, Britain's leading expert on the young royals offers an in-depth look at the wayward prince turned national treasure. Nicholl sheds new light on growing up royal, Harry's relationship with his mother, his troubled youth and early adulthood, and how his military service in Afghanistan inspired him to create his legacy, the Invictus Games.
Harry: Life, Loss, and Love features interviews with friends, those who have worked with the prince, and former Palace aides. Nicholl explores Harry's relationship with his family, in particular, the Queen, his father, stepmother, and brother, and reveals his secret "second family" in Botswana. She uncovers new information about his former girlfriends and chronicles his romance and engagement to American actress Meghan Markle.
Harry is a compelling portrait of one of the most popular members of the royal family, and reveals the inside story of the most intriguing royal romance in a decade.
New York Times best selling author, journalist and broadcaster Katie Nicholl has been writing about the British royal family for nearly two decades. She is Vanity Fair’s royal correspondent and co-host of the podcast Dynasty. She is also a regular contributor to The Mail on Sunday as well as other national newspapers and magazines.
As well as her successful print career Katie also reports on the royal family for the BBC and appears regularly on Good Morning Britain, Sky News and GB News. In the United States she appears regularly on Entertainment Tonight (CBS) and NBC’s Today show and she is CBC Canada’s go-to royal expert.
Katie Nicholl writes a comprehensive biography of Prince Harry from his early years up to his engagement to Meghan Markle. Using information gleaned from Harry's friends, colleagues, and also from interviews that Harry has given, Ms. Nicholl traces Harry's evolution from a young, restless teen trying to find purpose in his life to a mature, thoughtful, and intelligent young man. With his growing maturity, Harry sought to find someone to share his life with, and who shared his need to help make the world a better place. With a deep awareness of the serious issues facing the world today, Harry is determined to use his position in life to make positive and beneficial changes for causes that he feels are overlooked. This is a fascinating look at the lives of England's royal family as well as the life of Prince Harry.
This was a fun way to spend an afternoon. And a great way to get ready for the upcoming royal wedding!
A beautiful cover with the bonus of colorful pictures throughout, Harry makes a wonderful addition to any coffee table. It's a light and enjoyable look into the life of Prince Harry from schoolboy to present day man.
With a thoughtful hand: Life, Loss, and Love is a perfect way to describe the journey written by Katie Nicholl.
His friend Melissa Percy lives next door to me, and one night, I think it was after the royal wedding, Harry was over and they were having a party. Our roof terraces link and suddenly I heard a crash. Harry had jumped over the flowerpots and was on my terrace knocking on my patio door. Of course, I was a little surprised to see him and let him in. The next thing I knew he was kissing me, a proper French kiss! He traced a star on my forehead with his finger and said, "Close your eyes, beautiful girl, tickle, tickle, kiss, kiss," and the next thing he was gone. I was rather taken aback to say the least, but that was typical of Harry - he is a lovable rotter.
I must admit that I picked this up just for Meghan Markle, but I found Prince Harry to be equally fascinating, having known next to nothing about him. Having suffered the loss of a parent, but not as a 12 year old as Harry did, I feel I sort of identify in that way with Harry and his older brother. I was touched in the way they still remember and honor their mother - I was in elementary school when Diana passed away. It was interesting to read about Harry's military career, his charity work, and his spending time with family, friends, and celebrities. The two sections of color photographs were definitely great to see. Everyone loves a good love story, and the world over is enthralled by the American actress falling in love with the ginger-haired British prince. After reading this, you can't help but wish the two of them all the love and happiness in the world.
With royal wedding hysteria at a fever pitch, this seemed the perfect time to read a tome about Henry Charles Albert David of Wales. I had first heard of Katie Nicholl’s biography on Prince Harry back in November, at the time his engagement to Meghan Markle was announced. Ms. Nicholl, considered an authority on royal affairs, was interviewed about the milestone engagement and this book was mentioned.
I have long been fascinated with the British royal family, starting, I suspect, with Lady Diana Spencer’s engagement to Prince Charles. That event was the fodder of young girls’ dreams of princesses and perfect love – – something we would eventually learn was not the case with the Prince and Princess of Wales. The older and more serious Prince was mismatched from the beginning with the young and self-professed “naughty” Diana.
Harry, their second son and the “spare” to the English throne, has always been a subject of fascination for the media. As the “spare” and never seriously considered to be in line for the throne (especially now that William and Kate have three children) Harry has been given more leeway and breathing room and, as such, has gotten into more trouble than William ever considered.
Only twelve at the time of his mother’s untimely death, Ms. Nicholl explores that Harry has been hungry for maternal love and a family of his own. His youth is briefly touched upon, with the majority of the book dealing with his adolescence and adulthood. Ms. Nicholl does not shy away from Harry’s poor deeds and missteps (dressing in a Nazi uniform, anyone?) or bad habits, such as indulging in drinking and smoking. To Meghan Markle’s credit, it appears that the prince has either altered or given up these habits entirely.
Harry’s romantic life is covered in great detail; most important is the fierce media coverage and speculation being a matter of extreme frustration and unhappiness for him. His two most serious relationships prior to Ms. Markle, that of Chelsea Davy and Cressida Bona, were both broken down by not only the ceaseless media coverage but also the lifestyle that must accompany being with a senior member of the Royal Family. In these tales, Harry is seen as less of a playboy and more of a man who is both enabled and hindered by his position in life.
His meeting of Ms. Markle, as well as their long-distance relationship, is recounted in good detail here. Ms. Nicholl states that Harry apparently knew that Meghan was “the one” from their first meeting and the two do appear to have much in common, especially their dedication to humanitarian efforts.
It was heartwarming to read of Harry coming of age in his late twenties/early thirties and realizing he wanted to follow the path of his esteemed mother. Recounting interviews that he and William gave in which they spoke of Diana give great insight into both young men, who have turned out surprisingly down to earth and humble. Harry speaks of the pain of losing his mother at a young age and how he was not allowed or able to fully express that grief, even to this day. He also speaks of wanting to do his mother’s memory justice by his actions. Rest assured, Harry. You are.
I found Harry: Life, Loss, and Love a well-researched, written and interesting read. There were a few dry parts but overall, I think Ms. Nicholl presented a well-rounded view of Prince Harry, as well as some insight into Meghan Markle. With the recent rash of Harry and Meghan books flooding the market, Ms. Nicholl’s biography is a solid source of information. Pick it up to get your fix both before and after the wedding, or to learn a little more about Prince Harry.
I am a sucker for all things royal, and I especially like Harry, Meghan, and Kate. This book is slightly out of date as it was published right before Harry and Meghan's wedding and we all know they now have a baby. I learned A LOT about Harry (obviously) and I feel like this was a well researched and pretty much non-biased account of Harry's life from childhood, service in the military, losses and love and heartbreak, and the whirlwind of meeting and marrying Meghan. If you are at all interested in the royals and support the modernization of the monarchy, or just like pop culture stuff, I would say this is a good, fun, and interesting read.
3.5. No sure about the rating. This is a book for those who like Harry and Meghan and don’t know much about their lives before their wedding. I wasn’t expecting anything different.
A very enjoyable and enlightening read. Wonderfully written. Full review to come closer to release date.
Full review(5/19/18)
Writing a review for a biography is much different than writing one for a work of fiction. The way that I approach it is by considering mainly two things: 1)what information is presented and 2)how is the information presented?
Katie Nicholl did an excellent job chronicling Harry's life from birth to present. She included so many important things yet also many little tidbits that made his life(thus far) so much more fun to read about. She found the perfect balance between facts and events and giving you a real feel for his personality and who he is as a person. For this being nonfiction, the author really made him jump out of the pages. I really enjoyed reading this one and it gave me such a thorough knowledge of the young Prince's life thus far. Knowing everything I now know about him I can't wait to see what the future holds for him and his family. I highly recommend this one whether you're a Royal Watcher or just curious.
*Thanks to Little Bird Publicity and Hachette for the early finished copy for review*
When I learned Katie Nicholl wrote the book Harry Life, Loss, and Love it was put on my must read book list. I don’t usually read Autobiography’s. However, growing up I was a huge fan of all things dealing with the royal family. Not to mention I am very smitten with the fellow Ginger. This book exceeded my expectations.
Katie Nicholl was the perfect choice to write this book for Harry. Knowing him since 2003 she has seen it all. She had also written two other books for the royal family.
In this book you will hear stories about Harry and his past girlfriends, his charity work that he does in memory of his mother, his birth, his military career, his wild ways, and of course Megan. However, you also hear about Charles and Camilla, Dodie and his children, etc.
The parts that really pulled on my heart strings were the stories of Harry and his love for his Mom. There were times when I teared up reading it. I was a huge Princess Diana fan and was devastated when she died. Kate speaks of the emotions and the impact that the loss of Princess Diana left on him. Reading about it I just wanted to go into the book and give him a hug. He had a very special bond with his Mom.
There are beautiful colored pictures in the book from when he was younger to today. Alongside those pictures you will see some of Prince Charles (in a kilt-that made me laugh), Prince William, Catherine, Harry’s past girlfriends, Meghan Markle, Tilly their Nanny and who could forget the beautiful Princess Diana. Plus, the cover photo is a beautiful portrait of the happy couple Harry and Meghan.
One story that was told that caught my breath was when Princess Diana’s physic friend predicted the accident that took her life. I was in total shock when I read this.
This is an amazing book for anyone that is a fan of the royal family or Harry in general.
When in comes to the royal family's latest addition there are generally three groups of people. They love her, They hate her and they don't give a damn about the royal family and wonder why it still exists. I don't really fall into any of these groups but am sort of on the fence about Ms Markle now Duchess of Sussex. I always wish any new couple the best and hope they'll make it, but I have to admit I find it sketchy her family wasn't invited to the wedding and the pre wedding drama they caused added to those questions. I guess time will tell. Onto the book. For the first half it was all basically a rehash of other royal biographies both of Harry and of his brother and his parents. From his birth to the breakup and scandals of his parents' marriage to his mother's tragic death, to his school years and his relationship with Chelsy Davy most was all well known. It began to grow more interesting as it moved into more recent times. Like his tours of Afghanistan and the military training and press bribery he endured to get to the front line. His work with charity and conservation, like helping develop the Invictus Games, and walking to the North Pole and South Pole with wounded veterans. Of course along the way he had more than a few scandals including the infamous Nazi outfit and the Las Vegas trip where he was photographed in his birthday suit. I'm surprised that his two serious girlfriend's Chelsy and Cressida Bonas stuck by him even after what he did. It shows the type of guy he is I guess that these two intelligent beautiful women forgave him and stayed with him. It was the press that scared them away. I have to admit to seeing similarities between Chelsy and Harry and Charles and Camilla though. What struck me hardest is when Harry finally opened up about losing his mother. I lost my mother rather unexpectedly nearly three years ago and I was in my thirties. Harry was not yet a teenager and had face that tragedy. To add to it her loss was very public and he belongs to a family not knowing for openlyvsharing their feelings. My heart broke reading him talk about how he repressed his grief and I saw some of the same feelings in me at times. It was a refreshing change. After reading this and having watched the wedding, yes I was up early but in my defense I woke up with a headache and couldn't fall back asleep, I have a greater respect and admiration for Prince Harry and after all he's been through in his life I can't help but hope that he'll finally be able to live a settled and happy life.
Everyone knows who Prince Harry is ... grandson of Queen Elizabeth, son of Prince Charles and the late Diana, Princess of Wales, and brother of Prince William. This book is all about Prince Harry, starting with his birth (actually a bit before his birth), growing up with divorced parents, the death of his mother (and finally dealing with the grief later in life), his military career, his love life, his partying, his charities and ending with his engagement to Meghan Markle.
I found it to be an interesting read. There was just enough information without having too much detail. There were quotes and stories from people close to the prince, his family and friends, and Meghan's family and friends, but also from anonymous sources (those I always take with a grain of salt). It was interesting to get a peek inside how the Royals live, what is expected of them, etc. At the end, there are lots of colour pictures of Prince Harry over the years.
If you are interested in Royals, especially the younger ones, you will probably enjoy this book.
It’s Harry, of course I loved it! Now I’m fully informed ahead of the Royal Wedding. One mistake (always an editor). She says the wedding will be on a Saturday. I don’t think so.
In Harry: Life, Loss and Love, author Katie Nicholl focuses more on his adolescence and his adulthood than on his childhood. That was no problem for me, seeing as that was where a lot of his identity was formed. This book touches a lot on the hardships and inner conflict he experienced after Princess Diana's death, finding his footing as "the spare" but still a Prince with Royal Duties, and finding ways to embrace his wild side while also remaining professional and responsible. It touches a lot on his time in the air force as being a positive influence on his life. This book spends the last few chapters detailing his relationship with actress Meghan Markle, leading up to their engagement. It's a perfect read post-wedding, and an enjoyable light read. I look forward to reading more royal biographies of this nature.
Of course, I devoured this book. Overall, it was good - shedding more details/light into a lot of the headlines I knew of Harry’s life. I was at 4 stars throughout, but towards the end, it seemed to be “all about Meghan”. Fitting, given how their life together is currently panning out. Don’t get me started.
Normally I'm not a huge biography fan but I do enjoy reading books outside of my comfort zone from time to time. I also like to read about the Royal family. I remember the boys being so young when they lost their mother and my heart went out to them both. It's been so nice to that William has such a wonderful family and I'm so happy to see that Harry has found someone to spend his life with.
Harry. Life, Loss, and Love is one of those books that I could not put down. I was fascinated to read about Harry's life and all he has been through. From the loss of his Mom to his time served in the armed services and how they had to do so many things to keep him safe and the people around him safe. It was also interesting to see what his friends and the ladies in his life have gone through.
I love that Harry has found Megan and that their relationship is going to make it. You can see and hear their love for each other in the pages of this book and in the pictures. I think Megan is strong enough to support what Harry needs and withstand what the world throws at them. I enjoyed reading how they met and what they went through and how they have gotten to such a grand phase in their lives.
Harry certainly was a party playboy but wasn't really enjoying his lifestyle. He really needed a nice lady to enhance his life and to settle down with and start his own family. I think he has found the perfect mate in Megan. I'm anxious to watch their life together and their family as it grows in the years to come.
Overall I just loved this book. I felt like I learned a lot about Harry and what all this poor Prince has gone through over the years. Katie Nicholl has done a fabulous job of putting together a very fascinating story with the sources to point out the different things in Harry's life. Ms. Nicholl has a lovely writing style that was extremely easy to read and held my attention from the first page all the way to the end. If you enjoy reading about the Royal family and their lives you are going to enjoy this book. I know that I certainly did.
I was given the opportunity to read this great story and it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you.
William and Harry have long been an intriguing pair. I had great admiration for their mother, and like so many, a fascination with with their family. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news about Princess Diana's death - and I have watched as these young boys turned into young men. I firmly believe that there mother would be fiercely proud of them, were she alive today.
In this book, we get a bit of background on Harry as a young adult, as well as his courtship with Meghan Markle. It details the effects his royalty have had on prior relationships, as well as some of the high- and low-lights of Prince Harry coming into his own as a royal. Overall, it is an interesting look his life, and what ultimately brought him to where his is now - including his relationship with Ms. Markle.
I will say - this book does NOT include any of the actual engagement information. So just be prepared for that before you go in. Overall, though, it's an interesting read about Harry - and by default, his family, including William and Kate. If you are a fan of the royals family, or are particularly intrigued by this particular celebrity couple, then you will enjoy this book.
***NOTE: This was an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Noting that there has been some difference in whether or not the engagement is included, please keep that in mind when considering your interest in this book.***
This book is the perfect example of why I stay away from biographies...I need to stick to autobiographies. How this author rated an average of 4 stars is beyond me. It felt like she was writing for a child. I found myself muttering "seriously" through most of the book. Oh well, I was curious and stuck with it. I picked this up because I've been a Suits fan since season 1 and who doesn't want to read about a real life fairytale?
The world knows him as Harry, though his given name is Henry Charles Albert David. He is the ginger-haired “spare.” All his life, Harry has been working to carve out his own identity.
Although the royal marriage was rocky from the very beginning, William and Harry were much loved by both their parents. Diana was determined that her sons should be exposed to life outside the palace walls. She took them to homeless shelters where they learned by her example to chat easily with the residents. She gave them a bit of spending money (royals generally do not carry money) so they could purchase sweets and comic books in the shops. Occasionally they dined in fast-food establishments. Diana firmly believed that the princes needed to be able to relate to really engage with people, not just smile and shake hands.
When Diana died tragically in a car crash, William and Harry were devastated. They kept a stiff upper lip and did not express their grief for years. Charles became a very hands-on father, teaching his boys to hunt and fish. They developed a great love of the outdoors and enjoyed spending time in the country in various outdoor pursuits.
During his teen years, Harry made some missteps and poor choices that frequently landed him on the front page of the tabloids. The young prince was finding it difficult to maintain a low profile and avoid the ever-present cameras that were focused on his every move.
Harry joined the service and became a very capable soldier. He wanted to be treated just like his fellow soldiers, and for the most part was able to blend in. Alongside his mates, he trained hard and played hard. He trained as an Apache helicopter pilot and spent some time in the war zone in Afghanistan. His military options and postings were often limited for security reasons, which he found quite frustrating.
Eventually Harry resigned his commission and threw himself into charity work, an interest that Diana had instilled in her sons from a young age. Harry willingly lent his name, energy, enthusiasm and considerable star power to causes he championed. The highly successful Invictus Games, which offered wounded veterans opportunities to participate as fully in sports as their medical conditions would allow, is Harry’s creation. He also accompanied disabled veterans on a grueling and dangerous 200-mile walk to the North Pole. Among his passions are conservation and Africa.
He also began taking an active role in royal duties, often traveling abroad to represent his aging grandmother, Queen Elizabeth. With his ease of conversation and friendly manner, Harry is a real asset to The Crown and is welcomed enthusiastically wherever he travels.
As possibly the most eligible bachelor in the world, Harry’s romances have been well publicized. There were only two women with whom he had long-term relationships, and neither wanted to take on the life that marrying into royalty would involve. But the years of partying and dating are now behind the ginger-haired prince. Through a mutual friend, he was introduced to American actress Meghan Markle. Early on, Harry managed to keep Meghan under the radar, which gave their romance a chance to grow and bloom. As a celebrity in her own right, Meghan knows how to deal with being in the spotlight and does not seem intimidated by her new status. She and Harry share many interests and appear to be a good match.
The May wedding will be the first time in 80 years that an American has married into the royal family. Like Kate, whose husband William will someday be king, Meghan is a commoner. From the many interviews and glowing smiles, it appears that the prince has found his princess. May they live happily ever after.
A note: The wedding invitations have been mailed. For those of us who did not receive one, we can watch the ceremony on the telly.
I listened to the audiobook. It was pretty interesting to learn more about Harry. The two things that I took away from this book were:
1) Harry did a lot more with the military than I had realized. And with that knowledge, it makes the choice of not allowing him to wear his military dress at Queen Elizabeth‘s funeral, even sadder. Granted, he made the choice to leave the royal family. 🤷🏻♀️ 2) It felt like before Meghan, Harry was REALLY getting desperate to find a wife. Hence, when he got together with Meghan, it went fast and probably rather blindly on his part. I just hope it has all been worth it. 3) I knew Harry had done things in Africa and really liked it there, but after listening to this book, he is/was way more attached to Africa than I realized. I heard a statement recently that said that Harry had told someone that he had envisioned living in Africa and having his kids grow up there. Ummm……I wonder who changed his mind about that?!?! 🤔 Growing up in California is “just like” what he envisioned his kids’ life to be! 🤪 4)In light of all the negative things I have heard about Meghan, after digesting the details (big and small) of their courtship, I feel like there were some red flags to what has transpired over the last few years.
It will be really interesting when his book comes out.
Katie Nicholl does a nice job covering the life of Prince Harry, neither leaving out controversies nor fanning them. She also treats both Princess Diana and Prince Charles equally when describing their parenting. I must admit, though, I got bored reading early on and started skimming. That was definitely not due to how the book was written, but just a general lack of interest that always seems to occur when reading about the younger royals. Actually, I find reading about the older royals not that interesting any longer, either. The decades of Diana was one book after another, one magazine article after another, one newspaper story after another. Looking back, I still can't totally figure out why I found reading about her so captivating for so many years, but the spell is obviously now broken.
"Sunny came home with a list of names She didn't believe in transcendence It's time for a few small repairs she said Sunny came home with a vengeance"
So obviously I’m a little excited for the royal wedding...but seriously, it was actually very enlightening to get a complete biography on Harry. I’m not a royal obsessive in the modern sense, though I did read a whole textbook on historical monarchs before going to London last year, so take bat as you will. I guess it’s the historical aspect that intrigues me most about this wedding, since the last American to join the British royal family was Wallis Simpson, and we all know how that turned out (if for some reason you don’t, I highly recommend watching The Crown). All that being said, I have a lot more respect for Harry than I did, and it was interesting to learn more about his life, especially ahead of the big day!
This was interesting. I'm not a big news fan, it always feels very sensationalized and pushy, especially when focused on movie stars and the rich and famous.
I'm more likely to read a biography on someone if they've written it or co-authored it themselves.
But I'm trying to Branch out in my readying (slowly but surely!) and figured with the wedding coming up it wouldn't be a bad thing to take a gander at this.
I enjoyed it for the most part, there was still a few press style things I didn't particularly like but over all it was well written and informative, especially about his and his brother and sister-in-law's charity work.
My favourite one of the recently published biographies of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. In contrast to past biographies of Harry that often recount all the details of Charles and Diana's marriage and divorce, Nicholl keeps the focus firmly on Harry and his experiences. Nicholl discusses Harry's family life and the loss of his mother, how he gained a reputation as a party prince in his youth, his military career, passion for endangered species conservation and spending time in Botswana, humanitarian work, and relationships, including his engagement to Meghan Markle. Well worth reading during royal wedding weekend!
This biography of Prince Harry was a breath of fresh air compared to the one I read last year. I loved how Katie chronologically told his story the same way she did for her biography for Kate Middleton with such fluidity and not feel it's just a bunch of info that seem meaningless. I did know a lot of info of Prince Harry through other sources but there was some details of his relax with both Chelsy Davy and Cressida that I found fascinating and also how his mother's death had affected him for over twenty years before decided to getting help and being opened about which was very bragging him to do.
Pop Sugar Reading Challenge - a Book about a Family
Why did I not give this a 5? The book is very well written. I enjoyed insight into the Prines past mistakes the why, how things unfolded. What I if not like is ... we rushed right thru Meghan. It was almost like oh yeah he’s in live and married this new girl end of story. Now in essence that is fine - just a later story BUT the cover leads to one believing this includes detail on Meghan, when she is not mentioned until the last 1/4 of the book. Maybe the boom is a 5 and the cover is a 1 - that would be a better review! Just Harry on the cover.
