After finishing Blake’s 7’s TV episodes, this was my first exploration of its wider universe. I enjoyed Michael Keating’s narration of the audiobook overall, although the characters aren’t always as distinctive in dialogue as they need to be. However, all the writers do a good job of capturing the essence of the characters and, having got to know them so well, I often found I could distinguish them before I was told who was speaking. The anthology contains 6 short stories and I liked how we are told which TV stories each one is set between - they are spread across Series A, B and C.

Una McCormark’s ‘Separate’ stands out as it is largely told from Cally’s point of view shortly after she has joined the Liberator crew. This gives us interesting insight into her thought processes and how she’s adjusting to life with the rebels. She and Blake are the focus of this story and I was fascinated by the young girl they meet while exploring a planet.

‘Rock Star’ by Paul Darrow is the weakest story and felt like it needed a bit more work. I found Jonathan L Howard’s ‘Dominator’ a rather fun adventure and we get to explore the pairing of Cally and Gan, along with some curious ponderings about the Federation’s operations. ‘Metanoia’ by L M Myles plays on the issue of trust, so feels perfectly appropriate for Blake’s 7.

Trevor Baxendale’s ‘Contagion’ is excellently told and provides some wonderfully grim imagery, as well as some nicer small details, like the description of a computer screen reflecting in Avon’s eyes. The Series C crew investigate a strange distress call and we are treated to a tense tale where I hugely enjoyed the unsettling atmosphere.

‘Seven Magnificent Dirty Expendables on an Impossible Mission’ by Gary Russell is a different type of story as we spend a lot of time with Travis. It enables us to explore the character more and it’s a satisfying depiction of the cold-hearted Space Commander.

I really liked the book overall. The formatting was off though, with the text changing sizes randomly. Even Calibre couldn't fix that.

I especially liked "Dominator" and "Contagion". They both felt very on point as being Blake's 7 stories.

On the other hand, someone really needs to tell Paul Darrow that he cannot write. Or else suggest to him that he join some writers' groups and get pointers. He's not horrible, but I've read a lot of fanfic that is much better written. He needs to do the "show, not tell" thing.

So nostalgic.
This is a fun collection of short stories featuring the characters of Blake's 7, a series that I like very much.
This short story collection features all the characters that we love from the tv show and they are written very much in character. Cally, Jenna, Blake, Vila and Avon are just as they are in the tv show. Avon is as annoying and arrogant in this collection as he is in the tv show. The stories are also the types of stories that would probably have appeared in the tv series if they had been written then. A lot of fun.
