I read some of Tori Knightwood's books before and I was curious about this series. I finally got around to reading it and I am glad I did as I really enjoyed this book. Kenya Calling is a fast paced paranormal romantic suspense book with plenty of action and a fast burn romance. I liked the setting in Kenya and there was a great twist later in the book. I wanted to keep reading and find out what was going on and how Ryenne was going to solve the case.

Kenya Calling is told mostly from the point of Ryenne, her brother got killed by a wolf shifter years ago and she became a shifter hunter because of that. She hates shifters and gladly hunts down the rogues who kill humans. In this book she is hired by a rich Kenyan businessman who wants her to hunt the rogue who's been killing people in the town he lives. She also runs into some competition in the form of a French shifter hunter who has his own secrets. There are also a few chapters form Lucien, the french shifter hunter's point of view, which were a nice addition.

This book was quite fast paced, at times I felt like it was a bit too fast. It's not really the pace itself, it's more how certain events are dealt with so fast that they lack the impact I would've liked to see. That's actually my main complaint about this book, it was hard to really feel the emotions or romance because of how certain events lacked impact. It just all seemed to be dealt with a bit too fast and some events could've had a bit of a longer effect.

Another thing that bothered me was a small plot point late in the book about how Ryenne escapes a certain situation. It just didn't make sense for me what happened and how she out-reasoned someone in a way that didn't make sense. Or maybe that guy just wasn't as smart, but it just seemed a bit farfetched to me what he did.

Besides those two things I really enjoyed this book. The fast pace works well for the most part and I wanted to keep reading. There is this case about a rogue leopard shifter they're hunting. I liked how both hunters seem capable and they come up with some smart ideas and I liked how they handled the case. They also have some interested gadget/ weapons that they use. There's a great twist at the end of the book that both made sense and was well done. It really makes you reevaluate the whole plot. I also liked how the story line in Kenya gets wrapped up, but it's clear there is something bigger going on, which nicely sets the stage for the rest of the series and makes me looking forward to book 2.

Ryenne was a likable character. She is tough, but also has some soft spots. I liked seeing her interact with her business partner and it was fun to see her fall for the other shifter hunter. I liked how she kept her calm and was capable, but not reckless. I liked seeing her interact with some of the Kenyans they meet and how serious she took this job. It was fun to get to know a few of the side characters as well.

The romance fell a bit flat to me, it developed quite quickly. A bit too quickly for my taste. It made it hard to really feel their romance as after a few meals together and some mutual lust they jump into bed together even with a big secret that just got revealed. It just felt like that could've taken a bit more time and with how big the secret was I had expected Ryenne to struggle a bit more. One the one hand I am glad it wasn't dragged out too long, but it just felt a bit too fast now. By the end of the book I did get a feel for their depth of emotions and they made for a great team, but I just would've liked a bit more build-up. I look forward to seeing how their relationship develops in book 2.

I like how we get a bit of a feel for the world with how there are different type of animal shifters and they can be born or bitten. There are rogue shifters, but it also becomes clear there are god shifters as well. And then there are the shifter hunters who hunt the rogue shifters. There is a bit of an overarching plot line set up and we only get the first few hints of a mysterious group here that will probably continue to learn more of in future books.

To summarize: this is a fast paced paranormal romantic suspense book. Ryenne is hired to hunt a rogue leopard shifter in Kenya and has to compete with a hot french shifter hunter with whom she falls in love. I enjoyed the story and following Ryenne along as tries to solve this case and figure out who the rogue shifter is. There is plenty of action as well as twists and turns. I just felt the pace was a bit too fast at times, but mostly it was that some scenes lacked impact. I liked Ryenne, she was smart and capable, but also had her soft side. It was fun seeing her interact with some of the Kenyan people she met. The romance developed quite quickly and I didn't fully feel it, although by the end I did got a bit of a feel for the depth of their feeling. It's nice how the Kenya rogue shifter plot line gets resolved, but there is something bigger going on which makes me curious for the next book.

This work was previously published under the title “Kenya Calling.”

Ryenne and her best friend, Gavin, met in college, where she discovered self-defense and became addicted to it. So much so that she would forego other classes and go to the dojo, and Gavin, a pretty boy who looked like he walked off the cover of some men’s magazine, would cover for her with her mom and professors. But don’t think like that. Gavin likes men just as much as you do if you lean that way, and he calms Ryenne’s rough exterior. That is why they went into business together after college and created Shifter Hunters Ltd. They had been in business for five years, becoming well-known as one of the top firms in the country, when they got a call from Africa. This new client had a rogue shifter on his hands that he believed was trying to kill him. But once in Africa, her new employer had contracted another shifter hunter from France, who was gorgeous. The employer, Steven Muteti, pitted them against each other. Ryenne had to use her skill against a rogue shifter, and this Frenchman was starting to warm her in places she shouldn’t be getting warm.

Having never been to Africa, and my only exposure is from Johnny Weissmuller movies, I can only say that I could see in my mind’s eye parts of the world as the author described. The character development and interaction were easy to understand, but one interaction left me wondering what the heroine was thinking. We are told one thing throughout the book, and then she discovers the hero’s secret and does an about-face in a day. I don’t know about that, and only one line of soul-searching?

While I enjoyed listening (google’s read-aloud) to this fantasy, I had that concern and the knowledge of predictability, but beyond that, as I said, I enjoyed it. I give this shifter read four stars out of five stars.

A Smart Human and A Shifter Rogue Hunters

This rogue hunter hates them due to the fact her father and brother were killed by wolves. Not hired to hunt a rogue she discovers that another hunter has also been hired and they each only got paid the first half and only the one to get the rogue would get the second half. Can they work together or will they work against each other? They each have partners back were they are from that helps them in many ways. But on site alone against the rogue and unknown others without their own backup they find they need each other. But one has some extra secrets because they are a shifter themselves but only reveal it to save their lives. He is shot while she is captured and tied to a pole. Can they survive? Will they learn to accept each other or go their separate ways? Will they discover who was really behind them both being hired and why? Each had thought of things the other had excess to that could help their business. Will they decide to help each other? A good story.

Ryenne became a shifter hunter due to her brother being killed by a wolf shifter. Her hatred of shifters runs deep, so hunting rogues gives her a way to vent that anger. She is hired by a wealthy Kenyan businessman to hunt a leopard shifter rogue devastating his town and killing people. Apparently she has a competitor hunting as well, Lucien, a French shifter hunter with a dangerous secret. And she starts to have feelings for the shifter! Will she find the rogue? Will Lucien get there first? Will they combine their efforts and work together? Or is there more going on than they realize?

Faced-paced, action-packed, and filled with twists and turns, this story line will take the reader on a dangerous journey, not only the rogue putting her in danger but Lucien putting her heart at risk!

All shifters are evil, can’t control themselves and can’t be trusted. Well at least that’s what she has thought since the tragedy hit her family. Now she was powerful and strong and the best of her kind. When she accepts a job for her security company and heads to Africa she has no idea what she is in for.
This is a wonderful addition to this author’s series as we get excitement and intrigue with a surprising twist. I love the gadgets and may have to find some of my own for my travels. The characters are resourceful and dedicated to helping others while some have a distorted view but fit the story wonderfully. Their world has changed, it looks like they are gearing up for a war and we get to be along for the ride.

I received a copy from the author; this is my honest review.
-Plenty of mystery and action. Some romance. A few funny moments. Not too many scary parts.
-If you're looking for a feminine hunter, Ryenne is not your choice. But if you want a peep to an almost masculine image of a hunter, Ryenne it is. She grunts, she hunts, she fights dirty, she doesn't respond to questions but flies out of her chair instead; she's the perfect feminist female in the book. Not my type but I loved Gavin, Lucien and Steven equally. Lots of secondary characters but you don't get confused about them.
-There are more details about some revelations from the first book. Interesting concept of rogue shifters.

Shifter hunter fall in love with a shifter

Great story going from enemy to lovers. RY was a rogue hunter and human. Lucien was a shifter but also a rogue hunter. Now can Ry get over her feelings about all shifters. They met on a job in Africa after a rogue but is it really a rogue or a trap for them. Read the action pack book

Interesting writing and locale

I enjoyed the characters. And could use a bit of a back story. But, all and all this is a quick read with lots of action, some romance, and even suspense. I think the series will be a good one. I think Ms Tori is an author to look for when needing a good read!

I downloaded Kenya Calling as a free ebook from Amazon. Great storyline, but I wasn't too fond of the female protagonist (not sure why, but personal opinion, I think other readers may not feel the same way--hence the neutral rating). Good pacing, and plot.

Ryenne gets her first job out of the United States, and what a job it is! This story is filled with thrills, chills, intrigue, deception, and murder, with a bit of romance stirred through it! Definitely worth a read.

Interesting story of a rogue leopard shifter in Africa. However, there is no explanation of why the relevant people were targeted. I guess that comes later in the series, although I would have liked some kind of answer here.

I always love Tori Knightwood's books, and this is no exception. Ryenne, the heroine, is awesome! She's strong and determined and brave. She also grows so much over the series, and it was fun to see her transformation. Her relationship with Lucien and the nonstop action and intrigue kept me glued to the story. The mystery is really well written, and the sexual tension between Ryenne and Lucien is off the charts! This is definitely one to pick up if you love mystery, shifters, and a plot that will keep you flipping pages!
