Lester Brooks, a somewhat sheltered African-American high-school graduate, begins the long hot drive from Missouri to Texas with his temperamental ex-girlfriend, Teri. There the two will begin their freshman term at the University of Houston. But when miles and miles of road construction divert them from their planned course, they find themselves roaming the Great Plains of Texas in the darkness of night with not a single town in sight.
Without warning, Lester strikes something in the road that nearly flips the car over and leaves Teri injured and unconscious. Shaken, Lester tends her wounds as best he can, then seeks whatever he hit… only to be attacked by a terrifying preternatural creature. Barely managing to escape, Lester drives his sputtering car to the small town of Lee. But the citizens there wave off his tales of monsters as they set about healing Teri and repairing his car. Forced to linger, Lester soon intuits that all is not as it seems in the quaint little town. He expects to spend a few miserable days being subjected to the usual small-town suspicion. Instead he finds himself preyed upon by frightening creatures, loses his heart to a woman with dark secrets and finds himself thrust into the role of reluctant hero.
The Suirlang Chronicles is one wow of a book based on Suirlangs. Here an African American boy Lester on a trip to college finds himself attacked by a Suirlang. His companion and he gets help in a nearby town. But nothing is what it appears on the face value. Lester meets some really good people and interesting ones so that he feels romantic involvement. However life has many ugly truths in store for him and the hero gets the shock of his life.
The book is based on supernatural creatures Suirlang who are deathly and ugly. They are sexless and give out the most abhorrent smells. They are super powerful and super fast. However they have to keep their identity a secret and anyone who comes nearer to unveiling the identity could find himself on a speedy track to hell.
The Suirlang Chronicles is a super exciting, adventurous and interesting novel that would give you goosebumps and also tickle you in many ways.
This book is about two teenagers on their way to college when their car breaks down in the small Texas town of Lee. They soon learn Lee has a deadly little secret. The two must now fight for their life.
I would definitely give this book a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
The pros is the author grabs your attention from the prologue to the very end. The book is a bit on the longer side at over 400 pages but the storyline is so full and action packet that it will not fill that it is that long. The characters a full and complex. There is plenty of action and even quite a bit of horror with a dash of gore.
The con not cons since to me I only had one issue and that is things were not explained enough for me so I was left with questions. Such as where did the suirlangs actually come from... we are given some history but not enough... how are they made.... how are the killed...
So would I recommend this books yes, it will grab you attention and keep it. It’s got lots of action, but you like me might be left with questions.... but that could be done on purpose to open this up for a series.
P.S. if you have ever read anything by joe m Solomon and liked it you will love this book since they are written very similarly.
The Suirlang Chronicles: Lee by M.J. Solomon is a horror story. I really kind of regret reading this story before bed. I do NOT want to meet the Suirlangs in my sleep! The story follows a young black kids who are on a road trip, Lester and Tori. Along the way they get lost and end up hitting something in the road. Tori gets hurt and Lester discovers a horrible vampire/monster like creature when he goes to see what he hit. Lester gets away from the creature and they manage to make it into the town of Lee, Texas. I really didn’t realize this was a horror book until I was already into it. I honestly probably wouldn’t have read it had I realized it! But I’m kind of glad I did, the story flowed smoothly and the characters were all really well written. I’m pleasantly surprised that I actually liked it and would even be willing to read more of The Suirlang chronicles.
This book by M.J. Solomon will take you on the journey of Lester Brooks, a young African-American man, who has recently graduated from high school. He and his ex-girlfriend take a trip together from Missouri to Texas in order to reach their new school, the University of Houston. However, as they travel along to reach this place, something seems amiss and it isn’t too long before they discover they’re lost in the Great Plains of Texas with nowhere to go. Solomon writes with an incredible and captivating writing style that will leave you on the edge of your seat as you read to find out what happens next. Solomon includes many interesting characters that add even more suspense to the story and plot which makes it a very enjoyable read. This suspenseful book will be difficult to put down, and while it’s about 298 pages, those pages will quickly fly by as you try to discover what will happen to Brooks and his ex-girlfriend.
As Lester and his ex girlfriend Terri began the next step in life, they head off to college in Texas. Detours and road work soon put these two on a path to certain terror and an uncertain future. Lost in the dark on an old road, the car crashes into an unknown object. Lester begins to discover the unnatural things that live in the dark as they find a small town. The story is gripping and keeps your attention from start to finish. The characters are well developed and easy to relate to. I like the supernatural genre and this one doesn't disappoint. Good read and the twists will keep you on your toes. A definite must read for all the supernatural fans or anyone looking for a fun exciting trip through the unholy
This story did well to pull me in from the beginning. I didn’t feel bored and honestly just wanted to continue the story so I could find out what would happen next. The characters were well done and the it was clear that the author took some great deal of time on the book. The details were well done and I found that I could easily follow along with the story. The chapters moved nicely and there was very little low points that would cause me to set this book down. Really the only time I stopped reading was when my kids needed something. This was a nice turn from the traditional vampire lore that were used to, making this a very interesting read that was difficult to put down once started. I look forward to the next book in the series and what the author has to tell us then.
I love a good scare now and then and this book did it for me. This is a horror story about two young adults that get in a car accident and are stranded in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. Combine the lost, helpless feeling with supernatural creatures and you have yourself one heck of a horror story. This book reminded me of the movie "Jeepers Creepers," so if you have seen that movie and liked it, you will enjoy this scary tale. The only complaint I have is the editing - it could have used a bit more but I still enjoyed the plot and characters. Follow Lester and Terri as they recover in a small town that is not all what it seems to be - and hang on for one scary ride.
A scary tale! A scary tale of two young people who left to reach their new school, but met with an accident and ended up in his small scary town haunted by supernatural powers and weird characters. What they go through is a one dangerous, scary and horror journey. I would not recommend reading at night if you get scared and get visions. It’s a long book, but the way plot flows it will end before you know it.
This was one of the most challenging reads I've had in a while. It has the feel of a first draft, one that could use some polishing, but at the same time, there's a lot of potential. I could get editorially egghead about the things that could improve the novel, but I don't want to sound like That Reviewer.
The creature at the heart of the story is intriguing and terrifying: the suirlangs, a race of skin-changing vampire-like creatures with a knack for assuming the most unassuming identities and the most stomach-churning methods of feeding on their victims. It's great to see monsters that are genuinely monstrous, and which fool their victims so well, they fool the readers as well. Also, I give the author a thumbs-up for featuring an African-American protagonist in a genre that seems to feature a lot of European-American protagonists. And the author also has a keen eye for scene dressing, which brings the setting to life: you really feel like you've entered a small town with a dark secret, but one so well hidden that when the shadows start to emerge, you'll feel as taken off guard as the protagonist and his girlfriend turned friend, as they discover that life before college is a bigger, weirder place full of stranger things than they could imagine.
The Suirlang Chronicles is a fairly decent horror book. Lester and Terri former boyfriend/ girlfriend, now just friends, leave Missouri on their way to Houston to begin college and the rest of their lives. Taking the back roads they end up at a station out side of Lee, TX. Only to run over a girl while being a chased by the station attendants and a monster. They become stranded in Lee while they heal and wait for their car to be repaired. The town is preparing for an upcoming revival. Only its not a revival in the usual sense. Its the festival of the suirlangs. A cross between a monster and a vampire. Lester and Terri must escape the suirlangs and survive. While its not a Stephen King or Joe Hill novel its not too bad. It does need to be proofed better as it has quite a few incomplete sentences that lead to incomplete thoughts the reader has to try and interpret. I would be willing to read additional work by the author in the future.
