If this book speaks to you and you actually follow the advice in it, it will probably change your life. In doing so, this book isn't alone. Many books can do this, but it's up to you. Design Your Future is essentially an amalgamation of other books blended up and served in a condensed version with the authors own spin. What I liked about this was precisely that. The author mentions the other books that influenced their thoughts and views liberally and even has a "resources" section at the end of the book. A lot of books pretend all the ideas mentioned within belong to it or don't cite them very well. I felt this did a good job of that.

Another reviewer seemed to be complaining about this fact. I don't find authors borrowing from other authors to be a problem unless we're talking about plagiarism. Consider this a stand-alone overview. If you'd like more about a specific topic, check the resources section at the end.

The thing that interested me most about this book is that it isn't purely academic. Though the author is reading the relevant research, he is also actively living the advice he gives: he hires coaches, attends seminars, meditates, travels, and has changed the course of his life and business to pursue things he is passionate about.

More like 2 1/2 stars.

I was pretty disappointed with this book. I heard the author on a financial independence podcast and he sounded like he had some interesting ideas. I was hoping he’d expand on those ideas in the book but it felt like he was just borrowing from other authors and not offering much in the way of original thinking.

You’d be better off to just go read the source books he references if you want to get more depth.

Goals setting in your private and work life help to disrupt your life. Design what’s important to you as an high achiever. But it helps also to get out of your comfort zone by applying changes and achieve what you want. I think it has good tools but it shows also: we are really driven by habits and routines

This was a quick read but as a little hidden book, packs a punch. I need to change a few things, Disrupt. This book will help guide that journey.

Good content, spoilt by poor editing

This book is riddled with words that are joined together without a space between them. It clearly hasn't been edited or spell checked before publishing, which is disappointing.

I give this a four star rating based on the content and the author's good intentions.
There's nothing too shocking in here but what the author says is very true, and I'm sure that applying these techniques will help most people stop drifting and focus on being more effective in their life.

I agree that perfectionism stops a lot of people from reaching their goals, but basic proof reading and running through a spell checker should be mandatory before publication rather than an afterthought. I'm sure the author will fix these glitches in his next update. The content is worth reading for those who find themselves overworked and disatisfied with the direction of the lives. I expect that will be most of us.

This book is narrowly targeted at those who feel they have achieved some level of society-defined success - mostly financial and material - and who now feel that there must e more to life than the accumulation of digits in the bank accounts and more things to buy and call their own.

The processes are straight-forward and easy to understand (and in many ways a rehash of widely available material in the self-help world).

Quartuccio incorporates behavioral and thinking models from others and links these to his ADD (Awakening, Disrupting, Designing) model for designing a more fulfilling and satisfying life. But the content is well structured and neatly packaged into a relatively short read.

Overall the concepts and content are worthy of the short investment time (it's about a 90-minute read). Like most self-help models, the key to success will always be the strength of the underlying motivation that prompts change and its ability to incite sustainable action. The true value will come when the reader implements the tools and models provided.

Authors, particularly non-fiction writers, usually have the interests of their readers in mind when they write. Apparently this was not the entire case for this book. In the author's own words, "This book gives me authority; it raises my speaking fees and gives me the prestigious title of author."

While I'm not sure the self-proclamation of being an authority fully rings true, at least the main content should provide value to a narrow set of readers.

I am also not sure that publishing a book riddled with numerous (over three dozen I'd say) spacing and punctuation errors generates much perceived authority outside the author's own circle of friends. Unfortunately, the author is very correct when he writes: "The book you're reading is littered with so much imperfection it makes me cringe. But guess what? I've got a book!"

Sadly, these errors, combined with an overuse of boldface type, detract from the overall reader experience. Such publishing errors could have been corrected by a professional editor.

The bottom line: if you feel you're in a rut professionally or personally and you are not seeking depth of content, this book could help you propel yourself forward. On the other hand, if you are facing major issues in your life or struggling to cope with some serious challenges, you will be better off looking elsewhere for advice and help.

I listen to a lot of podcasts and read a lot of blogs about publishing, mindset blah blah. But for the life of me, I don’t remember where I heard of this guy. Or why I bought the book. I usually download a sample before I buy and I know I did that with this one.
Was it wine?
[It was probably wine…]
But I have adult kids who are currently adrift and whatever I’m doing (or not doing) isn’t motivating them, so hey…
But the problem – for high - achievers in particular – is that when you think you understand something intellectually , you think your work is done . But if you know something intellectually , and your behavior doesn’t change , then what good is it ? (Kindle Locations 406-408).

Huh… oh yeah…
Change is HARD . That’s why an awakening requires you to surrender . A true awakening must overpower 95% of your unconscious behavior . (Kindle Locations 474-476).

I suppose that’s true… I’m reminded of the old ‘choose your rut carefully’ story.
Seemingly , it’s the negative experiences that shake us deeper , harder and more often . (Kindle Locations 498-499).

Well, they’re so final and life-changing…
Oh now. *eyes narrow* I think I get what he’s saying.

So basically, he’s suggesting that rather than waiting for some awful life changing NEGATIVE disaster/scare to happen and knock you out of your rut, that you take control of your own life.
Be your own change.
And he gives you a 90 day plan to do that.
If you’re currently carrying the “ I suck at finishing things ” bag , put it down . The new story becomes “ I’m learning how to sustain and complete the things I take on . ” (Kindle Locations 1463-1465).

I feel personally attacked…
And to some others who have pointed out the errors. He knows.
The book you’re reading is littered with so much imperfection it makes me cringe . But guess what ? I’ve got a book .(Kindle Locations 1518-1519).

And that book got him followers… and speaking engagements… and income… and more followers…

There are many books to "get you out of your comfort zone", but most of them say obvious things. This book gives more helpful tips on doing that and getting out of a safe place when you are an achiever. Instead of worrying, we have to face anxieties and there are tools like having positive daily routines, keeping an achievement scorecard, and meditation, in order to overcome fears and become successful.

A very quick read that's structured like you're listening to a TED Talk. There are helpful tips to assist you in recognizing when you're drifting in life. I think it's important to keep in mind that the author is coming at this from a high wealth, big city perspective. The advice is still relevant to those of us with more modest incomes and lifestyles, but certain aspects are clearly not applicable. Overall, a good, quick read.

Some nice ideas, could have been a shorter Ted Talk

It was okay. Some helpful tips. Essentially could have cut things down to be a Ted talk. I think Dominic mostly wrote it more for marketing himself than anything. I'm somewhat disappointed because he seemed like he had something really profound to add when I heard him on a financial independence podcast. I think the best thing I got out of it were some book recommendations for each phase of his plan

I enjoyed this book. I finally understand the value of the Eulogy exercise. I had done it before but it had never really connected with me. I like the step-by-step structure of the book. Thank you for sharing it with us!

I heard Dominick Quartuccio on the ChooseFI podcast and enjoyed those episodes, but this book fell short in my opinion. Didn’t care for the audiobook narration either.

Short but powerful book

This books is very real, the author speaks directly to you, the reader, and doesn't sugar coat his message in any way. I love the style, I loved the message.

Now and again I find myself stuck in my career. I invest a lot in my education but for some reason I never seem to fully push through the blocks which stop my career development. At the time I read the book, the book was exactly what I needed - a positive companion to help me overcome that feeling of being stuck and the overwhelming fear that I'm hopeless and helpless when it comes to my career choices.

It is a short and practical book. What I could see was that author has read some really good self-help books and has made a very good attempt at compiling them to help us to create a good life for ourselves. I would say it is a good book for those who want to start reading self-help books. It is practical and has talked about doable actions which we can take to change our live.

Read on Kindle unlimited thankfully

The best part isn't from the author himself, it's this quote;

"People do not decide their future, they decide their habits and their habits decide their futures."

Really enjoyed today's Blinkist freebie! The summary on the app is the following:

It’s easy to get stuck in a safe, predictable routine built around a reliable job and a plodding family life. That, however, is a nightmare if you’re a high achiever – what you need are challenges, change and excitement. So what’s stopping you from shaking things up? Well, it’s usually fears about money, status and what society says you should be doing. Learn to face down those anxieties, and the world is your oyster. Luckily, there are plenty of tools you can use to help you do just that. Whether it’s crafting new daily routines, keeping a scorecard to track your achievements or meditating, the hacks in these blinks will help you unlock your hidden potential.

What I think is really good advice is the idea of score cards. One of the guy's goals to not watch TV, skip dessert, and get 8 hours of sleep are awesome IMO. What I think is really cool about the author is that he really values meditation a lot.
