The Best by Women in Horror

The first ‘Killing It Softly’ was just the tip of the iceberg…

Beneath the icy depths of this next installment, you’ll be plunged into a world where 38 female horror writers give you a glimpse of their inner-demons, unleashing the hell-fire they suppress in the ‘real’ world. It will disturb you to discover what really lurks inside their minds, because many of these stories delve into pain that can only be experienced by women—leaving you unhinged as you curl up with them during their darkest hour.

Post-partum depression, hording, anorexia, and mental health will be brought to light when viewed through the shadowy perspective of cognitive deception.

Sci-fi, romance, steam-punk, and fantasy intertwine with horror to deliver unsettling, chilling stories; traditional tales of witches, zombies, werewolves, and vampires will be told in twisted new ways that will shock, unnerve, and even repulse you…and within these pages, sometimes new monsters will arise from the ashes.

You may even discover that women can not only write good horror…but in some cases, can do it better.

(Please note, I have a story in this anthology, which I'm leaving out of my review.) This 600+page heavyweight of horror fiction is a chocolate-box with just about every sub-genre of horror included: police procedural, gothic, supernatural, body horror, noir, ghost, paranormal romance; you name it, this anthology has it. Something for everyone!

TITLE: Killing it Softly 2: A Digital Horror Fiction Anthology (The Best By Women in Horror)
AUTHOR: Multiple
GENRE: Horror
PAGES: 539
A friend of mine gave me this book as an early Christmas present, I was looking for something different and she delivered. Upon getting the book, I immediately started reading it.
It is my understanding that this anthology wanted to prove that women can write horror. Well shoot, I already knew that, but let me tell you, this second installment in the series (and please, please, please let there be a third!) proves women can write horror and in many cases give you better chills than a man.
This anthology is broken down into four different segments; Another Space, Another Time; Monster Party; Cognitive Deception; and The Changed and the Undead. This made it easy to choose a story according to what mood you are in. (I already discussed the fact that I can be a moody reader), and the format at the front of the book made it easy to just click on a story and viola, I am there! The fact that there are 38 contributors to this book, it made it more enjoyable to read it that way.
I will not take the time to break down each story, but I will say there is most definitely something for everyone! I would go so far as to say I dare you to not find something for your reading pleasure in this book!
The best part of this book? Have you forgotten “Ninetoes Rule of Reading #2”? I now have 38 authors to look at for more reading! Well, not 38 per se, I am aware of a few of them, but you get the gist.
Bottom line, get this book. Seriously, go, get the book. Buy a copy for a friend while you are at it! I give this 5 Bookmarks out of 5!

My review for Killing It Softly 2

Killing It Softly 2 is a big book. Thirty-eight stories to be exact. All by women. All unique. All terrifying. And all wonderfully well written. Kudos to editor Suzie Wargo Lockhart for putting together this superb collection. Killing It Softly 2 puts to rest the ridiculous notion that women can’t write horror. These stories hit hard, cut deep, and leave scars. I don’t usually single out individual stories in a review, but in this case, I will because these particular stories will stick with me for a very long while. “The Whims of My Enemy” by Amanda J. Spedding, “Scarecrow” by Vonnie Winslow Crist, “Death Warmed Over” by Rachel Caine, and my personal favorite “Bloody Rain” by Rie Sheridan Rose. While every one of these stories is cringe worthy and will make your skin crawl, some will also bring you to tears and some will make you cheer. Bloody amazing and highly recommended!
