The world is infested with demons, vampires, and ghosts who clash with wizards on the fringes of society. Faced with these horrors, there's only one thing a small-time wizard can do: absolutely nothing. Doing something could get a man killed.
Armed only with a modern view of magic, a snarky bloodthirsty apprentice, and no concept of the phrase "fair fight," Maker is far too weak to try and change the world. But when a new group of warlocks moves into the area with the goal of making his life more interesting, Maker will find sitting on the bench is easier said than done.
When I found out “Maker - It’s Time For an Ambush” was Jester Bobbity’s first book, I was shocked. His character development is executed masterfully, such that I quickly began to “know” Maker and Zora, although Bobbity’s writing style kept me from ever actually “knowing” them like I kept thinking I did and as a result, their personalities continually unfolded in ways that surprised me and yet each time turned out to make perfect sense.
Maker is a not-so-powerful wizard who knows his limitations yet finds the means to be resourceful enough to outwit players who are far more dangerous than he’ll ever be. He’s quirky, and playful, and fun, which is clearly his way of dealing with a haunted past kept hidden from the reader, yet at the same time made painfully obvious as the story unfolds. His side kick and apprentice, Zora, is ironically more powerful than Maker will ever be and, it is only Maker’s wisdom and clarity of mind that keeps Zora from getting herself in way over her head on more occasions than she cares to admit.
“Maker - It’s Time for an Ambush” will have you laughing while you cringe on the edge of your seat as he takes on magical creatures and monsters who anyone will tell you are clearly way above his pay grade because, well, it’s the only way he knows. And the world is a better place for it.
Well done Jester Bobbity. I look forward to your next book
This is an exceptional Diamond in the rough. Capital D. And Maker is as rough of a D as you'll ever see, but his Blaise façade is compelling to say the least. This book was dramatically undermarketed, and this is coming from an Ohio dude that has zero affiliation with the author. But I've read Butcher's Dresden Files, and, honestly, I'd re-read Maker 3 times before I'd even consider rereading one of the Dresden files. Not to bash them, they are amazing in their own right, but here we have someone who actually took the time to(and had the necessary skill to accommodate) to write a thorough, fast paced but not jarring, energetic but not erratic(at least in indispensable ways.) I would highly recommend this book to....honestly, grades 6 and up. It's one of those rare books that you wont get everything out of the first reading. And everyone will get something just a bit different from the same reading.
Move over Dresden files, there is a new wizard in town!
This is an awesome story with great action, and interesting magical dynamics. Intriguing characters. Shapeshifters, vampires (good ones, not sparkly ones) even some demons. Maker is a wizard who has to join forces with his enemies to stop the evil group, The Constellation, from summoning a demon and taking over the world. Great magical dynamics. The way he makes his spells to how he defeats his enemies. Using tricks to make weak spells become deadly. I really enjoyed and recommend this book. Excited to see if there is more coming in the series, As well as seeing where the author goes with other books.
I got this book through a free giveaway for an honest review.
Battles, imagery and relativity make this book one that is hard to put down. Jester Bobbity draws you in to Maker’s reality with witty banter, imaginative spells and descriptive scenes. The world that Maker lives in, not much different than our own, consists of monsters in many forms. With Zora by his side there is a plethora of evil that Maker must face. The battle scenes are rapid and numerous leading us to a major conflict that tests Maker’s genius to survive. Maker and Zora have a spectacular bond that is fostered by sarcasm and understanding.
With a little suspense, plenty of humor and action, it is easy to stay in Maker's world.
I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways and have chosen to give my honest opinion about it. The world was honestly phenomenally built; there was a unique blend of supernatural narrative that I truly enjoyed all of it. The characters were quirky, the plot was entertaining, and the writing style was easy and yet engaging. Overall, would definitely recommend!
First off that cover is awesome! Maker is a fast paced suspenseful read filled with engaging characters. I was captivated from page one. I enjoyed seeing the many sides of maker, from high level intelligent thinker to low level banter with side characters. I was really impressed with the fresh & new approach of how Maker does his "magic". I look forward to more from this Author
Creative, Mr. Bobbity's Maker would fit right along side Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden. A great read, worth every second spent immersed in his world. Also having met the author, he is a wonderful and intriguing individual. I can't wait for the next installment in the series.
I don't normally write book reviews. I really enjoyed this book. It felt either like Jack Reacher lived in a world of magic, or that Harry Dresden joined the military. It is fast-paced with the feel of a good action movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Strong visuals coupled with a grinning-with-a-cigar-clinched-in-your-teeth sense of humor. The characters are vibrant and real with the darker shades of classic 1950s noir. This is not a quiet before bedtime read. It is a 50 cc adrenaline-filled syringe straight to your heart. You won't sleep. The book will call to you and keep you up the entire night until you finish it. I find myself checking Amazon once a week for volume 2. Maker gets under your skin. He's the friend you wish you had, that always has your back but you might a little afraid to introduce him to your other friends. Zora is the girl next door that you had a crush on, but you also knew that she would kick your butt if you talked to her. This is a book about wizards, but think more John Constantine than Harry Potter. Don't expect war to be declared and everyone forming rank and file. The story is more like a no-holds barred street fight in a back alley that goes the distance. But, the cover warned you, "It's time for an ambush!"
Got this as an ARC I'm a bit surprised that I enjoyed this book as much as I did as it's not my usual kind of story I read because I tend to lean a bit more heavily on romance centered stories or a non modern setting for fantasy. But this one I did actually enjoy. The way they do their magic system is different than most of the ones I've seen. Magic in this universe costs you something and if you use too much of it you could potentially kill yourself because it's literally removing matter from your environment and converting it into whatever you need it to be so you could potentially freeze yourself to death because you've removed too much matter and kind of made yourself a pocket of a space vacuum. There are also POC characters as your main characters and I know that's a plus for a lot of people and something that they're specifically looking for so if that's something you're interested in you definitely need to give this book a try. If you like Contemporary Fantasy with Action and Mystery centered stories I'd say check this one out.
