We all want the best for our children, but what can we practically do to give them a head start? After extensive research and over 100 interviews with parents and parenting experts, journalist and broadcaster Cristina Odone has distilled her findings into this thoughtful and thought-provoking guide to what she calls Concentrated Parenting.
Drawing on her own experiences as a mother, stepmother and daughter, Odone identifies seven ‘Magic Moments’ in everyday parenting when a child is at its most receptive, including meal times, playtime and rule-breaking. She argues that a parent’s behaviour at these key moments can have an extraordinarily positive—or negative—effect on the child’s happiness and future development, and that by honing five vital skills, parents will nurture children with kind hearts, strong values and a sense of their own potential.
Honest, outspoken and witty, this no-nonsense handbook knocks a lot of modern parenting advice on the head, showing that it is possible to raise not just good children, but also good people.
One of the fairest or equal parenting books I've ever read. Some sections supported what I thought or how I approach parenting and then the next would support the other side.
The importance of choosing your moment, called a "magic moment" in the book, to address learning, a lesson in character building, etc has always been something that I believed in. I also think that it can be used as a reminder to help create good memories of childhood. Think about it, if you take your kid's camping and gripe the whole way, they aren't having fun either. They remember the gripes, not the fish they caught that you didn't want to clean.
Every kid is different and every situation is different, yet I think we all can agree that there are certain character traits that we would like to share and pass on, like integrity or resilience. This is a short read with great tips on how to do that and when.
A set of reasonable guidelines for parents to raise resilient children that are prepared for life as adults. Recommended for new parents or those seeking to know more about parenting.
I absolutely loved reading this book! It was easy to follow and the author takes us back to the importance of parenting rather then the internet and other proofreading our children! Very good book!
